  1. I can only wonder how you'd weigh that.

Depends if you see it as racism first as opposed to paranoia or economics. If it hadnt been for the african slaves parts of the south would still be part of Mexico
Right or wrong the economics of the south wouldnt have held

African american soldiers were held back in their responsibilities in WW2, you can choose to believe that was about white commanders thinking they were inferior, I think its much more about them worrying black units might get too much glory and press

South could have armed a whole lot of black soldiers and delayed the civil war or even turn it in to a stalemate. But they didnt, because they were worried about them turning on them and even taking over

I'm always sceptical about anyone trying to say its about pure racism ahead of money or territory or power

Jumping Jim Crow laws were about suppressing a sizeable minority that should have, would have had a far bigger influence

Can't say I notice that you are "incredibly diplomatic". But some people with your general outlook are quite open about their goal:

    No borders
    No Wall
    No USA at all!

Some things that make me suspicious:
Trump used the the birther thing with Obama to become a figure in national politics, launched his candidacy for the presidency with his remarks about Mexican "rapists" and "ciminals", "bringing drugs", attacked a Muslim gold star couple and a judge of Mexican descent (implying he therefore couldn't be impartial), tried to impose ban on Muslim immigration, said that neo-Nazis at Charlottesville were fine people, called for reinstatement of the death in New York against the Central Park five and continued to call them guilty after they were exonerated by DNA evidence and the confession of a different person, his designation of Hispanic and African nations as "shithole countries", his false tweets that African-Americans are responsible for a majority of murders of whites, his attacks on African-American NFL players and respected politicians like Elijah Cummings, his suggestion that Democrat congressmen who are U.S. citizens "go back" to where they came from (which made "Send them back" a chant at his campaign rallies. Is he a racist in his heart of hearts? Only he, God and maybe Melania and his hairdresser know. But there's plenty of evidence that he exploits racism in this country for political gain, which in my book makes him worse than a racist.

Who said anything about purity? It would be hard, if not impossible, to isolate "pure" racism from ulterior motives, and would be largely irrelevant. Was Hitler a "pure" racist, or was his anti-Semitism an unconscious mechanism to find a scapegoat for his personal failings and a means by which a person of limited talents could gain power? Who knows? Who cares? Most of the racists I know (and I know plenty of them) seem to be motivated by status insecurity ('I may not have much, but at least I'm not black, Hispanic, etc."), social acceptance (ethnic and racial jokes being a staple in conversation in my circles), ignorance (over-generalization from limited personal experience or misinformation), and/or upbringing ("that's what my Daddy taught me"). For example, I have a friend who doesn't like Hispanics. Why? The things he says about them is: they seem to be involved in a disproportionate share of domestic violence reported in the newspapers, they paint their houses in loud colors and decorate their cars with tasteless religious statuary, they show up late to church and leave early, their women are immodest;y dressed, , and his church seems to favor them unduly over non-Hispanics by tolerating such conduct (he's Catholic). Each of these ethnocentric claims, of course, can be refuted, but not by arguments that would have any hope of getting through to him.

In the history of our species, millions of people have been killed in the name of nationalism, second only to the number slaughtered in the name of religion. The future is brighter if we are able to move away from prejudice and parochial interests towards a more humane view. A local Indian chief by the name of Seattle has a famous quote “we all may be brothers after all”

That chant supposedly came from Antifa demonstrators. By "some people with your general outlook", what do you mean? Do you think many people left of center share those extremist sentiments? It would be comparable to saying "people of your general outlook" agree "Jews will not replace us!"

How so? That could very well be, because they may have registered their "likes" before I added the part about my friend who doesn't like Hispanics.

What he said about Charlottesville was this:

"very fine people on both sides"

That is a long remove from the impression you gave, viz that Trump endorsed the character neo-Nazis. But, of course, fairness and just plain intellectual honesty seem to be beyond you.

As for blacks responsible for the majority of murders of whites, well I don't know. Trump is, unfortunately, very "loose" with his facts. But I have read, from a source I consider reasonably reliable, that over half of the murders of Caucasian women by strangers were done by black men (most murders are not committed by strangers to the victim). A quick google didn't address that question, but it passes the "smell test" to me, so Trump may not be all that far off, at least in terms of the most the type of murder most people most fear (people can somewhat limit the risk of murder from people we know by choosing who we associate with). After all, Wikipedia notes that, "According to the US Department of Justice, African Americans accounted for 52.5% of all homicide offenders from 1980 to 2008,":

You say absolutely nothing, but you do it with an utter lack of intelligence. The slogan I cited has been chanted at anti-ICE demonstrations. I doubt those people- or you- have given much serious consideration to what those words mean.

I think what isn't being said says plenty.

No one is required to waste their breath talking to someone who only wants an opportunity to hear themselves speak. That's right, I think I'm onto you.

You seem to want to be taken seriously but your position on issues like immigration doesn't allow much room for it. It's like all the logic in the world is lost on you. Maybe you yearn for times that were better or where you didn't have to offer one iota of respect to a person of color who is an immigrant. Or maybe you live in a place where it's easy to pretend that these people don't exist.

But immigration isn't the topic. Donald Trump has countless flaws, as do all people. He offers no apologies. His unapologetic message is being disregarded. He is being investigated for impeachment. The guy is a joke!

And you with all your flowery prose and intellectualism can't see through him? I smell a hidden agenda and it wreaks!

For me personally, Sydney was right in that goldilocks range at 3 million people, enough people to be vibrant, not enough people to be arrrgh!

We are up to 5 million people now, and some parts of the city are just fucked with traffic and crowds
