I have always thought we are all human and despite our large differences we shouldn't make the gap between us bigger then necessary by putting people in groups we don't like. Yeah, I make use of groups as well in conversations to generalize and stuff, but I don't wanna live by them as much as some hippies, freaks or squares do.
This topic is really interesting. And reading through it, I couldn't help but think about how this happened to the "emo" culture as well. One day it's a culture (more or less) and the next day it's a fashion statement. In the past few years, I've definitely noticed the amount of bohemian-style clothing that shows up in stores. But it's ... wrong-looking. It doesn't have that earthy, kind of home-made rugged feel that original .. hippie clothing does. I look at my dad's old clothes from the 60s, and there's just something magical about them. It also bothers me when I see clueless kids walking around with peace signs around their necks and 'green' bags and whatnot. But I think it's just a fashion that comes around every few years, and not really anything you can do something about.
I think that the majority of people are now against war and that was the main belief that really made the classic hippies a counter-culture, but since it's now the norm, hippies are only different from average people in ways such as fashion, music and other not very "serious" issues.
over the past year i have found myself edging closer and closer to been "hippie". though i see it as a way of life. i am truely inspired by the things i can acheive in the frame of mind by loving and forgiving and been positive. the expeirence of the drugs sounds amazing when used in moderation to find yourself but unfortunatly i have made the personal choice to not try them because i have seen too many people let it ruin their lives. with hippie been the "in" style atm i have strated to visually expresse myself as a hippie as well as live by it. ive found many people find me alot more approachable, though im not sure if it is good or bad. in the past week i have had two older ladies come up to me, one telling me to have happy dreams and to never cut myself short. she made my day. and teh other one just commenting how beautiful i was. it has made me wonder why these ladies said these things. i appreciate it but i would like to no if it was because they were a flower child as they grew up, or becuase i looked like i am the kind of person they should say that too. im a stronge beleiver in old is gold, the music from the 60's puts me on highs that never end and i have now stolen most of my parents cds. im making an effort to make the panet a better and cleaner place, my friends at school cant understand why i am picking up teh rubbish in the play ground that isnt mine, i cant understand why they dont. to the world i may only be one person, but to one person, i may mean the world, so id like to at least make that a better place smile
i think that being anti-materialistic is a big defining factor as well. and when the economy collapses it's a good time to be a hippiefreak. you don't sweat it when you can't afford the latest whatever like the majority will.
decision whether to be a sheep or not..whether to be a black sheep or not or whether to be your self and not a sheep at all to make the right choices comes with finding the right freedom of choice in yourself.and not care what people think..or worrying about being accepted or not..if you know who you are and you comfortable and confident to be who you are you will know the real essense of your type of culture..a culture which all stems from the heart of every individual,be it hippie or not..you need to be happy and comfortable with who you are and not change to be someone you not..and try to act like others..be your own revolution..and through it comes your own evolution of becoming a better person and feeling better about yourself..and so the truth in your heart shines through. Be crazy who cares..be happy run through the flowers climb up those mountains reach for the skies take hold of what you believe in and dream and flyy
People just need to chill and not think about it, just do and observe.. Things happen, trends occur. It's what sticks and makes you feel right, is whats right for you.
