Why don't you go ahead and tell the story so that ppl may see what it is about and perhaps they will awaken when they read it.. maybe write an artical for your school -paper.. run off a few hundred copies and tape them to poles along the avenue.. write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper.. get the message out there.. these kids are looking for something.. they have the desire but not the knowledge.. teach them, they don't know.. they are unconscious, awaken them.. maybe that is why you are hear.. to spread the message.. Bright Blessings...sh
yeah i agree alot of teenagers just dress like that and everything are just following this whole vintage fashion and all that stuff its so anoying >.< gets me so frustrated. i knew this one person they were all tough and all of that stuff and all of a sudden the whole vintage fashion has come and he has become like a hippy i dont know if you all get me but that was an example..
Since you spewed that elitism at the end, I doubt you are around, but here's a thought: ever hear of fake it 'til you make it? by espousing the concepts of nonviolence (or whatever else one psychologically attaches to a peace sign) the human and soul underneath may start to get it. The span of the peace sign shows the spread of the message, the appropriateness of the stance today (and peace sign key chains were around when I was small, so to me this says the message is enduring, and the hippies of the Haight marketed peace signs.).
this happened in the 60's too. i can't count the number of chicks i knew who would wear peace signs, tie dye, etc. when they were after some longhair guy...then next thing you know they're dating someone from the air force or army base and their fashion choices change.
Well he must have said or wrote something down in order to file conspiracy charges against him. I know our government isn't that corrupt
As a teenager myself, i see exactly what you are talking about everywhere i go.. it's all around me at school. I was waiting at a counter for someone to serve me yesterday while i flicked through some teen-aged magazine.. and i was standing with a friend of mine shouting at the magazine and then continuously saying 'i can't believe this shit!' to my friend. there were about, 7 pages that had the peace sign on it.. another page with some girl's advertising jayjay's clothing with swirls and twirls and peace signs and the word HIPPIE across the page, while they stick up their peace fingers. Man, i get given so many 'rude remarks' (usually i just find them funny though) about being a tree-lovin-hippie and then i see the same kids wearing shirts that say 'GLOBAL WARMING IS NOT COOL' or 'MAKE LOVE NOT WAR' - wtf? what do they think i stand for when they call me a tree-lovin-hippie.. EXACTLY WHAT THEIR SHIRTS SAY, only... i understand what it MEANS! damn. it's also frustrated when they make something original into a shit 'remix'.. they are making the hippie lifestyle into hippie fashion.. there is no meaning, no feeling.. nothing more than a trend. the true meaning is going to become lost within this stupid trend or it will confuse many many people.. this girl once came upto me at a shopping center.. she's going out with a friend of mine, and he told me that she had an obsession with hippies and so he told her i was a hippie.. so yeah, she comes upto me like 'are you hippie jess?' and i just laughed and smiled while my friend goes 'yeeeeeeep that's her!!' and then she's like 'highhh five!!' and i'm like alright, this is sweet.. she seemed to have a good interest in it all, 5 minutes later she comes back to show me some pink plastic peace necklace that she bought and a week later i'm hearing about how she egged some girl's house for calling her a slut.. I DUNNO! my point is... yes! i agree with tedi!
this is interesting. i'm 18 (well, 17 technically, i'll be 18 tomorrow ) and a senior in high school. i don't really see it with "hippies", but a lot of people throw shit on to be trendy. walk around with symbols and a certain "style" because they just like it, and it doesn't mean anyting at all to them i won't lie, i've done it myself, but i've grown out of that now. i just think it's a matter of philosphy. western culture says that you can think one way and do another. think of the line "hate your next door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace". there's no emphasis on ACTION, there's only emphasis on what you "say" you believe. that's why i don't stand up for the pledge of alleigance- what does it matter what i say??? who cares if i sit or stand. that's not what's important. what's important is that i live purely and with values that i know are right. my teachers try to get me to stand up but don't say a thing when i do something "un-american"... they certainly don't live by true american vallues (at least what they are supposed to be- but america's dream died long long ago yet people still pledge to it and clearly don't mean a word of what they say)how insane is that?? it's all about what you say here. so when you tie that in with hippies, you get a huge problem. true "hippies" aren't really one entity, it's not like all hippies are the same. it's really just the name given for people who act from the heart and know what's right. it's sort of like buddhism- fuck what you believe, don't sit around thinking about ideals and morals and all of that- just go out and live them. so it's even more disgusting when people "talk" about peace and "talk" about saving the earth but don't do a thing to live what they preach. but our culture allows for that kind of hollow talk. i've been having serious problems with the west lately. but man don't think it's new. the media and other influential sources always capitalize on ideals. they made "psychedelic shampoo" in the 60's... hell things were going downhill before it hit the 70's when it comes to hippie culture.
Who is that fucking evil? stomping on a squirrel what the hell does someone get out of that. siiiiick :ack2:
someone gave me a 'peace' top and it's got this bright green peace symbol, the words 'GO GREEN' , about 10 $dollar signs on it.. next to hearts and smiley faces... cause you know, money can buy me true happiness and show me real love.. blah, that made me upset.
yeah. i know what you mean. and it's even worse now. wearing peace signs is becoming a huge fad right now, and eeeeeveryone is wearing them. you go into girls shops in the mall, and there's peace signs everywhere. on shirts, on purses, on jewelry, on ties, on everything. and i'm standing there wearing my peace signs (which i've worn for years) thinking "man, i bet everyone thinks i'm wearing these right now because it's a fad." and there's all these advertisments for girls, and the advertisments are of models dressed as hippies. it's really quite disgusting. the meaning a peace signs has been completely dropped now, and they're being worn simply because they're popular. i guarentee you 95% of the girls who walk around with peace signs nowadays care nothing about peace and love. they care about whats "in". makes me sick.
i brought that exact thing up in a class discussion. I asked this one girl if she knew what the big peace sign stood for on her chest and guess what...she didn't ....so i told the whole class exactly what i know (nuclear disarmament etc.) . and then this other girl who is always that in a fight is walking around with these HUGE peace hoops dangling from her ears. makes me soooooo mad
i went to a small local festival this summer, and while i was watching some musicians play some girls in their early teens came up and sat at a table in front of me. they were wearing shiny new neon colored shirts with 'HIPPIE' printed on them. they also wore lots of heavy makeup and messy beehive hairdos with multicolored paint sprayed on them. it was interesting...
Don't dwell on the past, you should just enjoy the present. Besides the 60's were not full of peace and love, J.F.K murdered, M.L.K, murdered, Race relations in the U.S were "shaky" at best and outright violent at times. The Vietnam war, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers killed. To say that the 60's were full of peace and love is actually in my opinion quite a slap in the face to many people indeed. The 60's should be remembered more for these things, Not for abunch of spoiled kids standing in the mud listening to music. Just enjoy the time you have on this Earth in this time period and try not to get stuck up in the past. Besides at only 26 years of age i'm sure that when you were a kid doing all those things you described in your post there was some 20 something that thought THEY were the real deal and considered you a "poser". I personally think its lame to see kids who have run out of creativity at any point in history and just try to copy another generations idea's without putting any thought to it.
I saw some girl with a pink peace sign on her shirt on the back it said 'give juicy a chance' I wanted to slap her. well. maybe not her.. well, yes, cause that pisses me off. not only is there the peace sign clothes, there's this big enviromental stuff going on now. clothes with peace sign + caring for the enviroment = LYK OMG I'M A HIPPY!!!!
the same thing happened in the sixties, from my understanding; it was as much a trend then as we feel it is today. sure, there were a lot of firsts in the 60s so they are alone separated by that fact, but in principle its always been the same- there are those who are tuned in, and those who want to fit in.
I thought about this for a while after seeing at Walmart peace symbols everywhere... but you know, if that's how people want to dress, I'm not gonna hate. Good for them... its just clothes. Like a coworker of mine was on a tangent on how he wants to beat up anyone who poses as punk rock. I was like, "dude, so what if they dress that way? If they want to they have a right to. And beating people up isn't cool... live and let live." I think everyone knows what the peace symbol means when they wear it. So, I'm not gonna tell you how to live or dress. rock on, live on. The peace movement, "hippies", and counter culture will always exist, will always continue, and always be unique, because it'll always be different and a step ahead. Of course its going to have followers (; Like I said, live and let live. If that's how they wanna dress, rock on.
