Its really a whole cast of people. In order, it was Hendrix, Hoffmann, Garcia, and wavy gravy that changed me for life. And Marijuana and morning glory seeds.

I hang out with everyone, and really, people dig me. But not the goths, ugh.

    Yes, this will last.

My mother inspired me to be a hippy since I was young. She was a flower child her self and always taught me that love will make the world go round and that we have to stop the hate. She told me stories of the good old day how people came to gether to stop wars and make a change for the better. I knew since I was young how I wanted to live my life. I love the enviroment and love the way inspires creativity and art. i mean look at all the beautiful things in this world the trees the flowers the mountains to the seas. The corporations always get me down with there billiions of dollars they only use for greed and how they turn people to buy their products and turn everyone to sell so they can sit on there "thrones of gold".

No one molded me. To be honest, in my opinion, I don't think any particular person can mold anyone into being a hippy. I figured it's something you come upon yourself. But in reality it's my own state of mind that I came upon that makes me feel incredibly hippy but sometimes uncomfortable with the assosciation.

As an approach to the cultural and stylistic side of the assosciation I've always listened to a lot of classic rock. But I find myself getting into a lot of music people would assosciate with hippies like folk rock, jam rock, psychedelic music across the board (like early psychedelic, kratrock, progressive music, psytrance). with the style, I never wear tye dye, not by principle, but just because i never cared to purchase any. A lot of what I wear is hand me downs and basic. I wear beaded necklaces because I really like them. I wear a long hemp one with a hopi arrowhead (that I came upon long before I was a "hippy"), also a couple hemp bracelets and cloth ones (very stereotype but I love them). I AAlways have been very fascinated by my little native ancestory. I feel like I can actually get in touch with it and absolutely love native culture.

Now, even if I had no hippy feel to me at all, and was more metalhead like I still am and very much more was, I'd still be a miraculously weird child. I was even before I ever ingested LSD.

Which is what I want to talk about. LSD has brought out the reality of my idea of freedom I've always had, that there really are no societal contraints on human thought and behavior. I can see through that perspective if I wish to or I could completely ignore it and be who I am. Which right now is just someone who lives day by day hour by hour with an always changing state of mind and approach to my life.

So basically whenever I feel like an utterly weird and spontaneous schizotypical freak I feel the assosciation I have with being a hippy.

But in reality....I feel that myself and all the "hippy" weirdos I have met and bonded with are just freeks. And THAT's what I'm happy with.

My story, as condensed as I can get it:

I'm the product of two hippies- my father: a previously pretty heavy drug abuser, musician and poet, and and mother: a responsible drug user, poet and artist. My father has a temper, but has always made and effort to teach me tolerance. My mother is kind of nuts, but has tried to instill compassion in me. We're all animal lovers. When I was born, they moved to the country as they lived in the city for a time and didn't think it was a healthy environment to grow up in, so I've been surrounded by nature and farmland all my life.
When I was in middle school, I was a sad and confused little creature: anorexic, hormonal, just diagnosed with a heart condition, and beginning to feel the effects of social anxiety (present in both sides of my family). I came across a thing called "pacifism" in the history books, and though I was an angry youth, I decided to adopt it... mostly because I thought it would be cool to label myself something no one else in my school had picked up (at that point in 6th grade, we had preps and weird kids, but no pacifists, lol). My friends didn't take it seriously, nor did I, until I started to really think about what kind of person I wanted to be.
I had always thought of myself as a Christian, even when I was a confused little urchin in junior high, but the more I thought about it, the more I found that my religion and pacifism went hand-in-hand (no matter what some will say). So, I decided to take this pacifism thing more seriously. I asked my mom about the hippie days and she volunteered information freely. I explored all those stereotypes that are associated with hippies (not bathing, skinny dipping, not wearing make-up, not shaving their pits and legs, marching in rallies, sit-ins, organic living, saving the planet etc) and found real ideals behind them... ones that the people that use them against us don't take the time to understand.
I think the latest transformation I made was last year, when I took and ethics class. I've become remarkably relativistic since then, whereas I used to be pretty inflexible about things (ALL DRUGS ARE BAD! SEX IS FOR MONOGAMOUS RELATIONSHIPS! etc... Some things I still believe, and some I don't, but now I don't judge those who don't hold the same beliefs as me, providing, those people are not hurting anyone).
Basically, I decided that this was the thing for me because, not only does it coincide with what I view my religion to be about (love), but it's good for the planet, it's good for the animals, it's good for other people, and it's just generally a healthy place to be. Why be violent when violence causes more problems than it "solves," especially when there are alternatives (Gandhi and King, as cliche as it is)? Why destroy the earth when it means we'll have nowhere to live? Why put harmful things into our bodies that we know will hurt us? Why hurt animals when they don't go out of their way just to hurt us? Why judge people who aren't hurting anyone? The more you try to force ideals on people, the more they will pull away. It's better to just answer their questions to the best of your ability and hope something got through to them. There's enough negativity without breeding tension and anger forcing beliefs and hurling insults.
These things just make sense to me. Sure, I was influenced by my parents, but for the most part, I found my way on my own, just by seeking out the information and seeing the product of the alternatives.

    For the record:
    - I am not into drugs (at the moment), but I do not in any way disrespect others' decision to do them safely. It's all about loving and respecting your body, though. Abusing them is just all around bad. I've seen what happens when you do, and to tell you the truth, it pisses me off when people do.
    - I shave my legs and pits and bathe at least every other day, but do my best to use natural products, because they are good for me and the environment.
    - I wear make-up. Not much I can say about that one. Working on switching to all-natural, but at the moment, the market is quite limited.
    - I have never been in a physical fight... just believe words are more effective. My only vice is arguing. I do it way too much. I need to work on letting stupid things slide.
    - I love horror movies. I heard a theory once that our primal brain craves violence. Don't know if that's true, but it would sure explain my slasher addiction. :D Could also be the fact that I have this insane ability to separate reality from fiction...
    - I do not love animals so much that it interferes with my belief in the food chain. I've been vegan, lived with vegans, heard all the arguments, etc. I see your point, I just disagree with some things. Sorry, I'm not going to change my mind. I don't disrespect your choice, though. If anything, I admire your conviction.
    - I do not subscribe to the free-love philosophy. I'm a jealous little creature and expect my boyfriend save it for me, so I would respect him the same way. Personally, I couldn't have sex with someone I'm not in love with, but that's my own thing. It says nothing about how I feel about others who don't believe this. In fact, I'm a firm believer in legalizing prostitution. I wouldn't utilize it, but I still feel it's a matter of sexual freedom.

My health teacher thought I was a human contradiction... I just call myself a tolerant thinker...

Like anything, it wasn't just an overnight process. I was always very artistic, but never found my voice until I got into music. From there it was influences like George Harrison and Eric Clapton that turned me onto the '60's and what was going on. Just a great decade for art and expression!

Who really impacted your life to turn you onto the flipside?
It was many who's, mostly rainbow family, and the heavy influence of deadheads during my childhood. I always liked Led Zep, Cream, Janis, Jimmy, Morrison and Joni... everysince I was young
How do your friends treat you, and who do you hang around with?
Like another human being... I hang out with allot of like minded folks, just cool characters and allot of rainbow family... there really is no specific age group that I hang out with.
    Do you think it'll last?
Of course Hippie really isn't a fashion or stereotype it is a mindset...

You wanna know who influenced me the most?! Who of all them crazies out there that really showed me the way?

    SKIP!!

When I was 14, I read a whole bunch of his essays and stuff, and that really got me rolling down the path, and got me thinking about things I didn't think about before. Yay Skip :D

well for me there were alot of factors. i started smoking pot when i was 11 or 12 ... with my mama. so her first. at the time i was a heavy into the oz man and alice cooper. and i slowly changes prefrence back in time. umm my pops had an old GD cassette that i liked. i never really understood why though. i guess he used to be into them when he was like 20. but he like neil young and america and the beatles. that mainly where i got it from. umm my dad isnt really a hippie i guess he just likes some of the music. but i soon found one of his old GD cds.. it was europe 72. grate album. i was soon enligten by lots of music of the 60 and 70's. went to mountain jam with a friend ( its a 3 day festy in ny) phil lesh was there with Gov't mule, micheal franti was there, and plenty other bands. that was sorta the icing on the cake everyone was so nice the envirement was amazing and it was cool. i started reading the baghadvita... some guy gave it to me at mountain jam. its a religious book. its kinda boring and im not very religious but im curios about it. the coolest thing ever though i saw phil lesh play with trey anastasio play at glens falls that was intense. idk i hope it lasts though. at least for a while. i mean it will always be a part of me even if i change my appearance and i have a Gd tattoo on my leg just to remind me of the good times :)

Who really impacted your life to mold you into a hippy?

I would have to say The Beatles. I was 13, and I was just getting into them. My grandparents always listened to them, so I started to. I was just really fascinated by that whole era, it's really intriguing.

How do your friends treat you, and who do you hang around with?

I always get the hippie jokes, but they don't mind for the most part...My friend has the same lifestlye as me, and no one cares.

    Do you think it'll last?

    Sure it will.

I don't know how I became a hippie, I guess I started listening to the music first, and then about a year ago I started seriously thinking about life, politics, religion, and found out what I valued. I believe last year around May or June I began a transition and I'm still changing now.

The one sucky part about being a hippie in high school is that you're kinda alone with everything you stand for. I'm the only real hippie that I know of in a high school of 3000+ students so all my stoner friends are the "gangsta" type. I'm the only one of them who has long hair and doesn't where my pants below my ass. I really wish I had some cool hippies to chill and smoke with.

This question is difficult because what actually defines a hippie? Everyone has different ideas. Like I said before, I know that I've changed a lot in the past year, and I know values can always change, but I doubt I will ever become a conservative or anything.

its not just four decades of what u percieve as 'hippie' people---people like
this have been around for thousands of years----'hippie' might be another word for it----i was actually quoting an older "hippie" ----i guess it all depends on wut everyone's opinion of a 'hippie' is and "opinions are like assholes, everyone has one..." (maybe this is a subject for another thread, if there isnt one already)

i think i've got a bit of rainbowism in me, but i also got a bit of dark side too---i dont mind it ---keeps me balanced so that im not too much of an extreme towards one or the other
