Another thing -- use the lightest absorbancy that will work for you. If it hurts to remove it, either you are using too heavy of an absorbancy (like ultra super when all you need is regular) or you are not bleeding heavily enuf to be using a tampon.... Well, if you remove it too soon, like if you're using a regular because that will last 4-5 hours, but remove it after one hour, it will hurt... But it shouldn't hurt under ordinary circumstances.

Aside from the pain, the biggest reason to avoid using too high of an absorbancy is TSS (toxic shock syndrome). It's relatively rare, but it has been linked to tampons, as well as other sources. If I remember right, what happens is, when you remove one that is not saturated with blood (which has soaked up all of the natural juices that would otherwise provide some level of lubrication), it causes tiny abrasions inside. That leaves tiny little open wounds, which may allow bacteria to enter when a new tampon is inserted. People also can get TSS from the gauze used to treat open flesh wounds -- I'm not sure I got all the details right, but the transfer of germs happens the same way for them as it does for tampon users.

So use the lightest absorbancy you can & don't use any if you are not flowing heavily enuf!

I heard you can do that, but tampons never worked well for me anyways (there was still plenty of leakage, maybe it was just the way I put them in). This summer, when I went to BC for summer vacation, I got my period but was determined not to let it ruin my swimming and seadooing! So while you do those things, just wear undies and a pad if you want, it stayed in just fine. But when water-skiing, I'd recommend definitely using a tampon so it doesn't fly off when you hit the water:p;)
