I think that the world is becoming more free and compassionate as civilization is advancing, we can clearly see that... in 2000 years of recorded history we have gone from despotism to laissez-faire capitalism and democracy, punishment for prisioners have become more humane, and we are always coming up with new ways to maxinize human potential.

the reaction in that case was purely mechanistic... remember, feeling without reasons are just hormones giving the body instructions... it takes reason to turn "feeling" to genuine "emotionality"

Of course I do, but I believe that our immidiate concerns have nothing to do with seals but everything to do with humans. Humans First, that's all I am saying

One day may the circle of your compassion expand beyond the borders of your own species...but I do respect your right to think as you do

By the way...don't talk to a woman my age about hormones...or a woman of any age for that matter...we'll give you a little info about how hormones affect the feelings. And they ain't rational either...

By the way..... that was somewhat irrelevant.

All I was saying is that, in animals, hormonal control is completely mechanistic and do not have an intellectual component to it, precisely because they do not have have that capacity.

yeah, but we have to be exclusive somewhere along the line... if we include everything then people might consider killing cockroaches "immoral"

    It was a joke...
Also, if you haven't lived inside a seal's skin and experienced first hand what being skinned alive feels like, I don't care what so called scientific arguments you are offering up. Your own commonsense should tell you pain is pain. Maybe they die without sentiment...without saying to "god" - why did this happen to me, like a human might - but does that mean that because they don't have our thought and speech patterns that they don't have any feelings?
We are the ones who have sentiments...because empathy involves putting yourself in the place of another - at least for "civilized people" that is usually the case.

Well, my point was that you cannot fit yourself inside a seal, because humans and seal operate in different ways. Well, even if I concede that seals feel pain, I would put human pleaures above the pleaures and pains of seals, because we are the ones who can appreciate pain or pleasure to a greater extent, and turn them into something worthwhile in form of inspiration.

So let's say, if seal fur is used to create a masterpiece that will inspire and entertain the world, then I woudl say that the killings of the seals is permissible.

So animals, to you, are a there for the amusement etc of human beings?
If so, then surely a LIVE and beautiful living creature should be the grandest form of upliftment possible for a human to wonder at and to feel inspired by. Not a bloodied carcass skinned alive by some unfeeling idiot, who just chose to make money out of the slaughter. Let's not get off topic here. What is uplfting about killing baby seals? I think it degrades all of us. Full stop.

I hope my friend LionHeart won't mind me sharing this with you all from his "60's and Beyond" Forum...I am sending it out to educate anyone else who thinks that animals don't feel, or don't feel as much, or are not as valuable, as human beings:

    Elephant Heroes---Thanks to Pat McGhee

From the unbelievable chaos of the Tsunami disaster comes an incredible tale from Jim France of the Pavilion Hotel Group in Bangkok. At a resort on Phuket, one of the most popular attractions is (was) elephant rides. As many as 8 people on one elephant, first into the surrounding forest, then down to the beach, to lunch at a fresh water lagoon, then back to the hotel.

The elephants (9) were kept chained to in-ground posts, not because they needed to be, but because it made the tourist mothers feel better because their children seemed safe from a tromping when feeding the beasts.

About twenty minutes before the first wave hit, the elephants became extremely agitated and unruly. Four had just returned from a trip and their handler's had not yet chained them.

They helped the other five tear free from their chains. They all then climbed a hill and started bellowing. Many people followed them up the hill. Then the waves hit. After the waves subsided, the elephants charged down from the hill, and started picking up children with their trunks and running them back up the hill; when all the children were taken care of, they started helping the adults. They rescued 42 people. Then, they returned to the beach and carried up 4 dead bodies, one of a child. Not until the task was done would they allow their handler's to mount them. Then with handler's atop, they began moving wreckage.

Hey all - The number of signatures is now 24,224, so please, if you haven't already signed, please do it, and get your whole family to do it.
Before I started this thread I thought "surely there are enough good people on this site to kick some ass on this". I thought it would be hard to find someone who didn't think killing baby seals was a disgusting and degrading act. Well...things here aren't always what they seem - but I do know that if enough of you come across this thread and you really are hippies like me, then this slaughter will be a thing of the past. Bless you all abundantly,
    Arielle/Goddess Om
