I've seen enough of these things. Cocks need to be out, need to scent the stank.

Sounds like he declared sympathy and support for the german army (and thus also their cause) during WW2? I'm not judging btw. Just wondering

My grandfather landed on the beaches of Normandy on D Day

My mom has a cross stitch his sister made showing his journey through Europe during the war. She crafted it from his location in every letter she received from him

    Maybe I didn't read that?

And being proud of your grandpa and some heroic action he did during the war and being proud on his service in that army are two different things. Anyway, I'm not convicting either.
It's just that logical thinking dictates that being proud on such a service can only be if one also agrees or sympathizes (at least to some extent) with the cause of that army (which our Irms often hints at in 'good fun' but always dances around with in seriousness). I think its understandable if one hints at this on a regular basis that someone reacts to it. I react in a very reasonable and openminded way.

They were either pawns/tools of the nazis or supporters and sympathizers. So yeah, pride in regards to service in that army is most likely connected to the latter. As there's little pride to take in you or part of your family being a tool/pawn in an army with such a cause.

I think it is connected more to the former....pride in a soldier who fought in the trenches isnt a bad thing
