The penalty for desertion in wartime can be death. Most deserters, however, serve up to five years in a military prison before receiving a dishonourable discharge.(at which point you also lose most rights as a citizen and good luck getting a job) Back then it seemed a shitload more sensible to do your two years and get the hell out.

I will state this once more, maybe if I type sloooooooower.....this was a war unlike anything we had ever gotten into before. Many of you people that are spouting off don't seem to have a clue about the facts on the Vietnam war other than civilians and babies were killed. It wasn't the same as it is now, with all of the information that is made available out here now, there wasn't reporters crawling up everyones ass. Information got out ONLY if and when the government allowed it in many cases. Considering you are talking about history, many of you sound extremely ignorant of what all transpired. Guess you can't really be bothered by details (ADD?)

And for that matter, you liberal minded folks that wanna talk outta yer hats...wtf have you done to divert this piece of history we have in the making in Iraq? What have you been doing to wake up the american people and thwart the governments actions? What have you done to take a part in an activist role? Or is it just easy to spout off partially correct enuendos from your computer chair. I am not as much of an activist as I once was, but I did a shitload back then and I still get some things done now.

 

i left this thread this morning on page 3 or four im trying to read it all but i will tell you this is making me sick to my stomach how can you littlel kids justify your words when if it wasnt for soldiers you would be put in front of a firing squad certainly war sucks but you no nothing about it for you to critizise a vet that did what was asked of him is way out of line!!! the world is a verey complicated place when you find a way to take all the evil in the world and put it in a box all at once then i will be subservient to you child kings of the world you can critizize but do it with some respect isnt that what you want?? then give it!! the reason you are allowed to say what you do is because people have fought and died to give you that right!!! so use it with rememberance and respect! there may come a time when you are forced to take arms to keep it or will you just give it up!and let the evil come and rape and enslave you and your family! yes peace should be the goal but it is and has been a long struggle we are nowere close war is not always fought on the battlefeild its fought in board rooms its fought in shoping malls, its fought in peoples hearts! but i will tell you to demean any! i mean any vetran is WRONG!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!!!!

This whole discussion would be sooooo much easier if everyone (like mui and myself for that matter) would direct our bashing directly towards eachother so everyone knows who you are blaming who for being 'ignorant' or 'patronising' or 'stupid' or 'wrong' or whatever eloquent words we are using here to describe eachother.

Spit on the soldiers?...yeah I was there, I was in country back in 1962 that was
when most US citizens didn't even know we were there, I killed a bunch of VC some of'em were not much older them me, I was all of 18, some were younger,
sure call me a baby killer...some of those babies were trying to kill me....ask your grandpa's about shoeshine box bombs, back then you did not know who
the bad guys were, they didn't wear uniforms, you could not tell who was who
and there was no score card.

I killed a bunch of people that were not VC, fact is I don't think I was even
in Nam at the time...the land didn't have any marks on it like a map to tell
us if we had crossed into Laos or China, Cambodia...grunts had it bad, they
killed up close, gun ships were good duty at least you didnt see the eyes,
you didnt smell the sink of death, hear the last breath, see the blood, since
the fear....yeah and they spit on me when I got back in the real world..
that was a small price to pay...now I sit here in an old school bus, that is
where I live, don't have a job...I cant be around people, I dropped out,
I still see their eyes, smell their stink, just like it was yesterday 43 years
later...booze doesn't help, drugs...they don't help, the VA hospital
keeps me supplied real good, it only makes me numb for a short time
I get the screeming me-me's all the time....flash backs PTSD...it ain't
pretty my young children.... they say some of us died back there
in country...and didn't even know it...

My teachers, friends all said I had great potential, could have been something
you know...but here I am, dead to the world...I still see their eyes..
smell their stink in my nose....or is it my own stink I smell...doesn't make
much difference...it is all the smell of death.

You underestimate the will of certain people. I would say what I wanted to even if a gun was being held to my head. I will say what I want because that is a freedom I was created with. It's called free will. I don't have it because somebody was over in vietnam killing VC, or in Iraq killing Iraqis. I don't have to respect anyone. If I think something is morally wrong I will speak up about it. That is my own right. Patriotism doesn't mean silence, and you would do well to remember that because a lot of people would like for you to think that it is! I am a veteran also. If I want to criticize another veteran then you better believe I will. You're under the impression that all veterans are heroes and deserve our respect. I already touched on that subject and won't do it again. Perhaps you should go back and look at it. You're seriously brainwashed and don't even know it.

 

I don't see what willpower has to do with it. I'm not a patriotic person at all, in fact if the opportunity arose I'd move in a heartbeat, but I do know that this country respects your rights, it respects your opinion and lets you express it with no real interference. Hell, I can be a musician here and have all kinds of other opportunities that I couldn't in other places. I don't see how you can't reckognize that. Standing up for what you believe in is all well and good, but being allowed to live with your beliefs fulfilled is better, imo.

But is it just an urban myth? For certain something of the sort happened somewhere but was it as widespread as it seems to have been? Did you have a hard core pack of Peace zealots practicing hit and run on Vets in the nation's airports? I can not for the life of me imagine that some members of this "spitting army" would not have been caught by the law at some time or another. Not as single arrest anywhere has been reported. So if there were spitters systematically hocking on Vets they would have had to have had some official sanction to stay unarrested and unpounded. Which means the government or military was behind the spitting program for some incomprehensible political reasons. If this was a black op it was a pretty successfull one as people are still raging and ranting about "Dirty hippies spitting on our boys just back from the war." I for one have heard the spitting stories too many times to discount them as urban legends.

I know personally of several incidents that it happened. It wasn't just at airports. It was IMHO shameful behavior and took away from what we were protesting against as well as demeaning and undeserved to the men that fought and already been thru more than enough. I stopped talking to a friend because of that kind of crappy conduct. You already heard from a few men here that it did indeed happen as well. So I guess its not some mythical incident.

 

Okay already it was me,i did it,hocked up a big one and let it fly and now 35 years later i'd do it again.
