Spitting on Vietnam Soldiers

Show me a picture of that happening.

Like U.S. soldiers are the only ones that committ these crimes. BS.. We get the flack for everything.. war is hell. No matter who is doing the fighting. What if it were Iraqi that were doing the raping, which I am sure that they do. Look how they treat their women. Like we have any controll over what the Gov. does, do any of us civillians have any controll over what any gov. does. You hate Americans?!?!?. The non-politacial civillians have done nothing to deserve hatered. You hate me. Why, have I harmed you or anyone you know. Does the gov. rape our paychecks so that they can send your country money?!? While we strain to make our own ends meet. We are no more guilty of war then you are. We are just people trying to get by raising our families and working till we drop dead.
I for one am tired of taking the blame for every little upset the world faces. I have no means to fight the war machine, and it's not just the USA that fights wars, these third world countries have been fighting amongest themselves since before Christ. How am I to blame for this, or my children. You hate our president well so do we. Excuse my vulgarity but Bushco is fucking us just as hard as he's fucking you. Amercians did not invent war. so get off us and clean up your own back yard. We didn't ask for this war either.

If you look at European numbers you'll find that lots of country in Europe (And the country China) have a larger percentage of obese people than America does. We are not the fatest people on this planet, we may soon become the skinniest at this rate.

Fake-Ass "Rape" Pictures of Iraqi POWs

A commenter on the WMD post provided a link to some very disturbing photographs of alleged rape of Iraqi women by American soldiers. The top selection of pictures you will recognize as those involving an investigation into Brigadier-General Janis Karpinski and those under her command.

Scroll down, however, and there is another set of photographs that Albasrah alleges to have received from a reader (caution: sexually explicit photographs, not safe for work):

The Abu Ghraib Prison Photos (UPDATE: This link is broken now, as the site appears to have been taken down. The pictures are spread out in various locations in the internet but I will see if I can find another link for them).

I have two immediate gut reactions to these pictures:

1. If they are real, the people responsible should be court-martialed and executed.

2. Albasrah may have a vested interest in faking such information to make the U.S. look bad.

Rather than discuss the possible truth of these pictures, let me discuss what I notice about them that makes me believe they are fake (excluding the bottom two, which I think are probably real):


1. Blurry images
Most of these pictures are taken at a close range, yet they are out of focus. Getting past the question of why soldiers would be stupid enough to take pictures of stuff like this (we've already established that Brigadier-General Karpinski's soldiers were), I have to ask why are they blurry? To disguise the ethnicity of the soldiers? Bad quality camera? Karpinski's pictures were sharp and clear.

The soldiers do sort of hide their faces in some of the pics, but in others, their features are blurred out just enough to make ethnicity uncertain. Also, in some of the pics where their faces are not covered, they are wearing camo face paint to further disguise their features.

And is it just me, or does the woman in picture 5 look rather, um, Asian to be an Iraqi pow?


2. "Porno Film" body language
I've watched a fair bit of commercial porno in my time, as well as some "amateur" porno done by people who aren't experienced. The commercial stuff has some hallmarks, particularly in the way the actors position their bodies for the benefit of the camera.

Notice in picture 3 how the man on the far right has his body angled slightly toward the camera, one hand on the woman's rump and the other arm pulled back out of the way. That's not a natural body position for sexual intercourse. It is, however, very typical of staged pornography, in order to give the camera the best view of the action. Picture 4 shows a little of this, too. I can't really explain beyond saying that the man on the right, who appears to be the same one as the man discussed in picture 3, is exhibiting what one might call "porno actor's stance".

In picture 8, two of the men have removed their trousers entirely, but are still wearing their boots and socks. Huh? That seems pretty awkward to do when they could just shove their pants down to get them out of the way. It is, however, a common feature of porno films intended to preserve the military "fetish" look of the boots.

And finally, in picture 9, the man on the far left has his body angled back toward the camera to give a nice view of the penetration, and has considerately moved his arm back out of the way in the classic "hand on hip" pose common in porno.


3. "Comfort" trappings for the "victim"
Notice in that pictures where the woman is kneeling or lying on the ground, that there is a blanket neatly spread out there for her comfort. That's something unobtrusive that is commonly done in porno films, but it seems rather odd for these cruel rapists to have gone to such trouble.


4. Generic uniforms
The men are wearing camouflage fatigues, but if you look closely, they are completely generic. There are no patches, no markings, no flag or other identifying insignia that American uniforms (or probably any country's uniforms) would have on them.

Come to that, these guys are all wearing forest and jungle camo. In Iraq? Dude, we all know that our soldiers over there are wearing the desert camo pattern. It's visible in the last 2 pictures (which are probably real, unfortunately) and all the images sent to us by the media. What kind of idiot wears green jungle camo in a pale tan desert environment? Also, they're not wearing helmets. I guess the folks staging the pictures couldn't find any that looked real.

That gun in picture 8 doesn't look like any of the issued military weapons I've seen in pictures of our soldiers. It definitely doesn't look like an M-16.


So, in conclusion, I call bullshit on pictures 1-9 in that second set. Those are fake as hell, and not very good fakes either.

This thread is not, and was never about Iraq or whats going on there. This thread was about soldiers coming back from Vietnam and whether or not they were spat upon.

I'm sorry. I thought I might be able to relate what's going on now to what happened in Vietnam. Well... I guess that wasn't meant for me considering I wasn't the first one to talk about Iraq.

 

I've actually said it several times. It wasn't the same thing. I pointed out the differences already. Seems like if there isn't a thread about the war in Iraq though, that someone ought to start one. Evidently there is a huge desire to talk/debate about it.

 

Vietnam is the topic. Lets not derail this topic.

Allthough i am young, my father fought in the war, and i have a respect for vietnam vets. In that situation i do not know what i wouldve done, but i know the world is not so black and white, right and wrong, and you cant decide that every person who fought in the war was a bad person, they simply had no choice.

Not true. A lot of South Vietnam (I think it was them) helped us fight. We recruited and trained a lot of them, we did have Vietnamese allies.

There's a difference between killing and standing up for something.If you're so willing to die valiantly why don't you set yourself on fire like the Buddist monks did,taking women and babies with you is the true cowardice.

 

Because setting myself on fire won't prove anything to anyone... if the only way to protect what you have is by killing... then that's what you have to do. Or do you propose that we all hug and hold hands while being shot at?

Have you ever been in a war zone? Do you know what it's like fighting in an urban environment? They use women and kids as protection. What are they supposed to do when a bus full of guys with weapons and human shields comes at you? Are you supposed to let yourself die? War isn't pretty. People don't want to kill the women and children. But are you tellinge me that you wouldn't shoot at a kid or woman shooting or throwing grenades you? I know I would.

 

Why would i be in a war zone unless i was there to kill something.Nobody is attacking us.Sure there was 9/11 but that was after Nam and it wasn't Sadam who did it,so again why would i be in a war zone killing women and children defending their country?

 

Doctors, nurses, aid units, news people, charity workers, etc all go into combat zones. You may be one of those... but I was trying to get you to think of how different everything is when your best friend just got killed next to you and bullets are flying over your head. War zones exist outside of Iraq.

Women and children defending their country? So now they're combat units? Someone who fight is someone who fights. Man, woman, or child... they're trying to kill someone.

Women and children (and innocent men) are a very unfortunate casualty of war. It sucks but that's war, and war is reality. As much as it sucks it's true. If you'd talk to some people who've been in war you'll notice that most of them go through hell if they ever even hit a woman or child.
