One of the most powerful songs of my generation was also perhaps one of its least heard. It was by The Association, best known for catchy pop hits such as Along Comes Mary and Cherish. Fine songs in their own right. But their Requiem For The Masses was a bold departure for a MOR-type band. With its military drum cadence and trumpets, combined with Catholic High Mass chants such as The Kyrie, it was never released as an "A" sided single. I forget which 45 rpm tune of theirs that Requiem was the flip of, but I suppose these days, I could find out soon enough. Anyway, I'm gonna guess it was the B side of Windy or Never My Love. Doesn't matter. The song does. Check it out. Look up the lyrics if you have to. Message songs to me are different than statement songs. A good message song would be Cat Stevens' "Father & Son", Pete Seeger's "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?", Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror", or Harry Chapin's "Cat's In The Cradle". If I find myself quoting lines from the song, then it's a statement song, but if the song generates an understanding or feeling in me that is not just a translation of the lyrics, then I consider it a message song.
I like this message.....mutally, though, not one sided. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz-UvQYAmbg"]MARVIN GAYE & TAMMI TERRELL "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" - YouTube
