Everything revolves around money and social benefit. Reading a novel, for example, won't gain you points at the water cooler at the office; but watching Survivor will. But what's the real issue? I think time. A book takes time. It takes effort. In a world where you can watch 30 minutes of a prime time TV show and converse with the majority of coworkers, it's easier. Does this mean we're lazy? I don't think so. I think it's the increasing pace of life. I think it's a symptom of an even deeper issue with the current trajectory of the human race, which I am quickly realizing I am to high to continue writing about.
i've ordered like 6 or so books already this year... i rarely ever read anything that's fiction though... if i'm going to read it's because i want to learn something.. not to be entertained
I love reading books, fiction and non fiction. But the prices are crazy at the book stores. The last book I bought was part of a 3 book series. I bought the last 2 online and only paid $5 more for the last 2 together compared to the first one and shipping was free.
^^^ Amazon ftw.. only time i go to a bookstore is if 1) i want to skim the book before i buy it.. or 2) if there is really no price difference between amazon used books and the local book store(after shipping is calculated in) We have a used book store in town.. they wanted like $36 for I-Ching.. lolwtf.. bought it on Amazon for $4
BTW... does anyone remember that site where you can post where you left a book for others to find? its like a book cache or something
Fuck Amazon and ebay, not cause they're useful and cheap, which they are, but because they lack that book store smell. Used books yo. We actually have a gigantic used book store in CT called the book barn, in fact it's so huge it's in 2 locations in the town. The second location is in a normal building, but the main location is actually set in basically a bunch of little barn buildings. More importantly they have cats, in both places, like 10 of them that just wander around and it's awesome, along with a bunch of turtles, a sheep, and a goat, along with free coffee and cookies. http://www.bookbarnniantic.com/
LOL @ by weed I mean books. I dont know why people are disgusted and saddened by this. Maybe they like watching TV or going on a nature walk... not everyone HAS to like reading, people!
Of course the stats shown are only for the USA. This is not true in the UK and other countries. Especially in the UK where books are advertised on billboards everywhere! I'm sure there is a dropoff there too, but they are far better read in the UK than the USA.
Those numbers seem way too high for the amount of books that sold in the country every year, Oprah might have something to say about this.
310 million people in the US, even if a huge number like 90% of them didn't buy a book last year, that still means that still means 31 million people did buy a book, and a good amount of people who do buy books tend to buy several, if not often a dozen or two dozen books a year. That seems to be the main problem, reading as a form of lesiure seems to have gone away with video games, cable TV and the internet. People who were mediocre about reading still read as it was one of the main forms of entertainment possible really until the late 80's, but now it's basically become those who don't read and those who avidly read with no middle ground.
The correlation between reading lots of books and not being an ignorant moron is pretty strong. There are exceptions, though.
