sex is (obviously) a natural instinct but I think it has been grossly manipulated and perverted by a variety of culture influences. however I think sexual oppression is just as dangerous. It should be treated as something natural. It shouldn't be something used to scare society but it also shouldn't be shoved in our faces all the time.
:mickey::love:i do agree that our culture places to much value in the idea that sex sells therefore we must put it all out there. if maybe we didnt try to suppress our sexual selves and be more like the europeans it wouldnt be such a big deal anymore. we need to see some more cock and bollocks.cock and bollocks!!!
I see what you mean. Yes, I think we all are obsessed with it at times. Reaching orgasm feels good - especially in the company of one or more human beings. Any act that increases our odds of reaching orgasm is an act that we will try to do as often as we can. The odds of our species surviving would be much lower if this were not the case. The fact that orgasm is the one natural thing that feels better than anything else, obviously is going to make it the center of attraction for most people. Add to that the fact that we can do so many things with it to add to the pleasurable feelings surrounding it and the fact that it can be a great distraction from unpleasant feelings, it is only logical that it becomes a focus of many people's lives. I think humans think and talk more about sex (obsess) because we have the imagination to do more with it. We can eat wheat from the stalk, drink raw milk and devour raw meat off the bone - or we can turn the wheat into pasta, the milk into cheese and the meat into hamburger to make lasagna. The same with sex. There are infinite ways to experience it. There are infinite ways to reach orgasm. Yes it is true that a lot of people obsess on sex at one time or another, but that only seems to be a natural consequence if being human to me.
well there are certainly worse things, and less natural ones. i do find obsession with stilted sexual cleche's, because anything else would threaten the brainwahing of children, more then a little annoying. but compared to obsession with war, the persuit of greed, and mindless fanatacism, sex seems rather tame and mostly harmless. i really would like to see, a LOT more interest in a far greater diversity of other mostly and even completely, harmless, things.
Some people seem to understand my point, while it seems to have went over other people's heads. Point is, there was a time, mostly before the last 50 years, when love and mutal respect for another person reigned supreme over the lower base urge to simply get off and bust a nut. For hundreds of thousands of years, the primary purpose of sex was to procreate. This natural instinct has been subverted and used to create dysfunction in society. It wasn't until the mainstreaming of porn and promiscuity via the media that people became obsessed with sex to the degree that so many are today. I mean, I just look at some of the posts on these forums pertaining to sex, and it's mostly a bunch of sick, deviant shit that I don't really consider to indicate a healthy mind. Sex has been used to dumb the population down, just like sports and television, and many people don't even see it, either because they can't or don't want to. I mean, go figure, there is more illegitimacy in the world than ever before, and much of it has to do with people's attitudes towards sex, which have been indoctrinated into them. People care less about raising a healthy family which they have the means to support and care for than they do getting their rocks off, which amounts to little more than a few minutes of pleasure. Yes, sex is a natural instinct (no shit), but there is nothing natural about the way most people view sex today. I am not trying to preach or come from some moral high ground, and I have not been unscathed by this social engineering myself. I just look at how society is becoming more and more enslaved and dumbed down by the day, and if you look at television and pop culture, it is clear to see that sex has a lot to do with it, and is the reason why so many people become unhappy in their relationships, while in the past people used to stay together for their entire lives and were happy doing so, because they had something in their hearts and souls which most people today don't have, which is love and compassion. Like usedtobehoney alluded to, most people these days view a relationship more in terms of sex than they do love and commitment, as if fucking is the only element to being happy with another person. It's no wonder society is so fucked up and there are so many children being raised by the state because they only have one parent who has to work full time to make ends meet.
I am surprised this is coming from you. Before 50 years ago, so before the Beatles, no one was having sex for fun? "For hundreds of thousands of years, the primary purpose of sex was to procreate. " Are you kidding me? What on earth makes you think humans were somehow more conservative 50, 100, 2000 years ago? Dont be so naive
I don't think real sexual desire has increased as such, that is pretty much a constant,it is that we have developed a libidinal economy. The saturation of society with sexual imagery, including pornography, is commensurate with the development of the rise of visual media, engendering a certain kind of voyeuristic scopophilia.I think there is however a disparity between most people's real sex lives and the ones portrayed in the media.Sexuality has to some degree become reified, and society has to some degree become pornographised. I don't think this is entirely healthy, but as we know, sex sells stuff,be it pop records or motor cars.On the other hand, repression can lead to sexual neurosis, and in certain situations it's better "out than in" as the old saying goes.Traditionally, men were the voyeurs and women were the exhibitionists, but it seems now that these roles are converging.A lot of what sex is about is all in the head;it's how this translates into what we do with our bodies that is important.Which reminds me - I could really do with a good shag.
I think you give "the controllers" too much credit. Just because you see that something may work in the favour of those with power does not mean that it was all a grand plan they concocted to control the masses. Sometimes, it's just the way she goes.
I don't think people's attitude towards sex has really changed. I think people are more vocal about it, it's often overplayed by the media, but it's also still taboo. We were watching an episode of The Walking Dead and John asked "why are all the zombies wearing clothes? How come we can see people being hacked into pieces, but we can't see a boob?" And that's a rotten boob, don't even think of one in the body of the living. I've never met a person that's obsessed with sex, even myself that often consider myself hypersexual, go though months of feeling like a monk. I don't think the internet can be used as a measuring unit for how much more people think of sex because it wasn't around before, but people have been having sex for pleasure for a long, long, long, long time. Sex for pleasure is not even something that's exclusive to humans.
There were a couple more things I wanted to say, but I've slept less than 2 hours and I'm starting to feel more incoherent the longer I'm awake.
Does sex become devoid of joy if you intellectualise it? Like "Hang on love,I just need to see what Foucault says on the ergonomics of jouissance as it relates to pre-cum". On the other hand,I think nerds have the randiest of imaginations.Smart turns me on.
There are definitely a lot of parallels between our society and Brave New World. Hell, just the other day I took a drug called Soma XD . I would say that some sexual freedom is necessary i a soceity. In the past we have been far too repressed. But our soceity today is the product of a lot of idealistic concepts from half a century ago, but drawn out a little too far. People are so sexually liberated that they are very confused and the average person feels very alone. I go to college and man we have "condom grams" as valentines, and giant bowls of lube everywhere and if you sit down anywhere someone (usually a person who clearly doesn't get laid) starts a discussion about sexual freedom. I told some of these people I tried not jerking off for a couple months around exam time last semester and they were shocked. I don't really know where I stand on this issue, but I I get the impression that the people at my school are wayyy less sexually liberated than they make themselves out to be. I'm pretty sure everyone's talking about sex a lot more than they are doing it. It would be more fun if it were the other way around. And the other thing about sex is that its deeply powerful, even magical right. A lot can be done through sex. But to treat it as if it is part of everyday hygiene (Wash your hair, brush your teeth, jerk off to some hardcore anal porn, eat lunch, go fuck some college bitch, get a good night's rest, etc.) really reduced its power. I probably have a distorted view of it. I'm pretty sick in the head right now. I used to have sex, but I rarely do anymore. Pressed_rat, you are very conservative sounding for someone who posts a lot on a hippie forum. Like oversexualization can be very bad, but people doing kinky shit (like on HF boards) is not necessarily a bad thing. Ya know like maybe theyre even married loloololol yes it does. Fucking dirty overanalyzing postmodernists ick ick ick. yeah same. :/

* The Kama Sutra has been dated as early as 200 BCE. * Graffiti from Pompeii from before the eruption in 79 CE included: Weep, you girls. My penis has given you up. Now it penetrates men’s behinds. Goodbye, wondrous femininity! Restituta, take off your tunic, please, and show us your hairy privates I screwed the barmaid Theophilus, don’t perform oral sex on girls against the city wall like a dog Celadus the Thracian gladiator is the delight of all the girls Atimetus got me pregnant I screwed a lot of girls here. Two friends were here. While they were, they had bad service in every way from a guy named Epaphroditus. They threw him out and spent 105 and half sestertii most agreeably on whores. Restitutus has deceived many girls. * The Last Judgment by Michelangelo was completed in 1541 this is a picture from it: That's two men fucking. On a painting commissioned by the Catholic church, during the Renaissance, by an artist that is still heralded as genius. Also keep in mind; Pius IV had it repainted in 1565, before then, there were no clothes in the painting.
I don't really understand why its strange that we are obsessed with sex... Sex is the reason we exist. we came from a sexual act and we make other people with it. Its the whole reason why we exist. There is nothing special about it. Every living being on the planet is doing it.... the body is a vessel. And its sole purpose was to help the reproduction of self replicating machines. Genes. The real playa here is DNA! We create new bodies with ours and the replicating pattern of the genetic code lives on and on. What we can do is enjoy the ride
It may seem that your point has gone over people's heads, but if you look closer I think that you aren't taking into consideration that most people know that outside of some unnatural religious cult beliefs, sex has always been for enjoyment and not reproduction - as far as animals go. As far as genes go, it's about designing organisms that enjoy sex to increase the odds of having sex and passing on copies of those genes. I say "increase the odds" in bold because people of the same sex can enjoy sex without reproducing and people who know that they can't reproduce can enjoy sex. Enjoying and desiring sex is natural. Yes it can be an obsession, but that is subjective.
Sex is a major distraction, indeed. I can't believe how obsessed we are with it. One only need to walk by a Victoria's Secret store to realize that. I have mixed feelings about the whole sexual liberation policy. I don't feel that we live in a sexually open society. Female nudity is overly sexualized to the point of being disgusting. I would love to be able to walk around topless, free of second glances, if I so desired. That being said, I wish sex would be more of a private topic in the world. I wish it could be reserved for consenting adults/teenagers/whatever. I would like to see it taken out of the media, I wish we wouldn't get all up in a tizzy when the Miley Cyruses of the world decided to pose nude on a wrecking ball. These sorts of stories need not be sensational. They are a distraction from things that actually matter. Yet people buy into it, they gossip about her, judge her, while their other freedoms slowly get edged out from under their feet.
