IN fifty years these right wing experts on socialism only came up with one book written about some Gulag, and written by a guy who went to Vermont to live. And now they claim to be experts on socialism.
I believe part of the problem is the conflation of socialism and communism and heldover ingrained beliefs from decades of anti-Communist propaganda. The two are not the same. Now debate that!
Communism is a classless society while socialism is government controlled means of production. You can have one or the other or both.
Socialism is not necessarily a government controlled means of production. It can also be a cooperative based system of production. Socialism is also noted for things like improving the condition of the working-man with the insurance of workmen against accident, sickness, and old age.
I don't actually think that's socialism I think that's liberal democracy if you live in Mexico.. The United States is actually built upon many different structural systems capitalism socialism communism republican-democrat liberalism all intertwined some way in the United States including all religions .. Can't we all just get a bong.
Well I think this thread has had a good run, but some just want to derail this thread and throw it off topic continually. Hope that doesn't continue, it's a worthy subject to discuss.
Well, I wouldn't really call Vietnam socialist anymore, they have sold off half their state owned businesses in the last decade, in the process of moving to capitalism And Laos, a nation of isolationists really, you get that same cultural attitude there that you get in Thailand, a country of farmers for the most part where it's too damn hot most of the time, heavily Buddhist of course, if they are not happy with that life they will easily just move to a big city outside their country Before 2020 I'd travel to those three countries 3,4 times a year. On a day to day basis you'd be hard pressed to work if you were in Laos or North East Thailand half the time, cultures are near identical. So I'd cross Laos off the list as well Which leaves Nth Korea, which I definately wouldn't want to live in, and China which I think was just ghastly Other than that, Cuba and a few countries in Africa that are close It's not a list that is all that encouraging
idle Yet without government computers would not have existed and cars would not have become so prevalent (and profitable) without government building all those publically financed roads That is why I’m a Keynesian. As someone pointed out the problem with ‘Socialism is that we have had a hundred years of wealth backed propaganda equating it with every evil under the sun. I mean the US has had two well document ‘red scares’ and the last one basically purged left wing thought from public life in the US. I think [hope] things are changing and that the new wave of progressives will pull the US more to the left as it is way to far to the right the moment.
It seems to me that the problem with the ‘envy’ argument against lefties is that it seems more like projection The people presenting it are the ones that are focused on having stuff so they can’t imagine people for which that is not so important – they can only think in terms of self-interest so they can't imagine people who are concerned for others - they are greedy so they cannot understand those that are altruistic. And it goes the other way I don’t understand their envy, greed and selfishness. I don’t get angry at some guy in a Maserati – I do get angry than people don’t have access to decent healthcare when its needed -I do get angry at those been exploited on low wages that are having to go to food banks to survive. And I don’t understand why people would want to prioritize having a Maserati over having a society where children don’t have to go to bed hungry. As to not working hard in my experience here it is the right wingers that are the laziest group here I see people like Tish and MeAgain and many other left leaning members putting in real effort to debate and debunk the lies of the right and more often than not the right wingers just run. And I know many lefties that work really hard like the nurses and doctors in the ongoing health crisis and I don’t think they would prioritize having a Maserati over saving a life which I’m afraid to say I think many on the right would, and that is a mentality I don’t understand.
Any discussion on socialism would have to contain talk of how many countries in the world currently are regarded as socialist states For me that definition would be based on the majority of industries being state owned/run Which would technically disqualify China So, apart from Nth Korea and Cuba, who else are we actually talking about? Pension in Cuba is about $US10 a month Cuba: Living on a $10 pension | DW | 08.07.2019
Socialism makes nations so rich, their streets are literally lined with money! Reality: Socialist Venezuela’s bolivar is so worthless from hyper inflation it’s become litter
LOL As I said the problem with ‘Socialism' is that we have had a hundred years of wealth backed propaganda equating it with every evil under the sun. And the easily bamboozled seem to fall for it every time. I mean the US has had two well document ‘red scares’ and the last one basically purged left wing thought from public life in the US.
Communism and socialism are sort of like Christianity. They are always interpreted differently, by different people, in different countries. Some countries say the system offers/includes free housing and no private property, or little private property , or some private property, or allocated private property. It depends on the country and who the authority is which makes these decisions. In some country, they issue standard locally made cars to each family. In others they issue a voucher which allows the buyer to go and use it on the car of their choice. In rich socialist countries like Libya, the people got a free house provided by the government, and $50,000 to go and buy a car of their choice. Under Gaddafi, newly wedded couples got another $50,000 as a wedding gift. In Libya, people got free medical care, and free education. When the Libyans engaged in business, their system functioned freely and with little government regulation. The right wing extremists in America always attempt to demonize socialist nations and use scare tactics, like saying, "They will take all your private property and clean out your bank account." That is just not so. I have been to many socialist countries where people owned their own home and car. They had nice clothes and furniture. They had nice bank accounts. They were able to go on vacation, because the state paid for their healthcare and education. In America, the majority of people can not afford to go on vacation, because the Republican business tycoons insist they work for very little money, and work without health insurance benefits. As a result of this Republican ideology, most bankruptcies in America originate in outrageous medical expenses. Bernie Sanders explained this well: If the government does not help poor people with health insurance and a fair living wage, the bankruptcy court will be very busy. Bernie Sanders is right. For some reason, these Republican extremists cannot absorb what Bernie Sanders is saying.
Yes, the right wing extremists in America have murdered people who had spoken about worker rights. Look up The Ludlow Massacre and the Centralia Bridge Lynching.
It seems all anyone has to do it put ‘socialist’ in front of anything for the followers to start frothing at the mouth its rather pathetic really. Socialist medicine, social welfare, socialist bagels Its seems like just uttering the word and their minds turn to mush - all thought goes out the window, no questioning of if they are been manipulated they have been told it is ‘socialist’ so it must be bad it must be evil It seems to have got more frantic as right wing ideas get more discredited I mean neoliberalism has failed and is flailing – they have no real solutions to any problems just ideas that can too easily be shown to make bad situations worse. So all they have is negativity and the culture wars – and yes call anything they don’t like socialist.
When their currency went into FREE FALL, it was because of American sanctions, not because their nation did anything wrong. Venezuela was doing just fine until American sanctions..
Do you have free medical care in Australia? Try to answer the question without reference to Hillary Clinton and Ben Ghazi.
A pure socialist state does not exist.NK is a brutal dictatorship and actually communist - socialism doesn't appear to exist there, nor in China...Cuba tries, Venezuela is a disaster due to the USA's interference on many levels. Many governments have socialist ideals in their constitutions, but blend it with the reality of the current capitalistic world. That doesn't work too well most of the time.
As much as everyone is down about Cuba, I've heard really good things about their preventative healthcare. They have doctor visits in their homes...
