Hmmm...this happened to me twice this morning and has been happening pretty frequently recently. I can occasionally faintly see the room I'm in, and though I want to wake up it's impossible for me to wake myself up. They've also been accompanied by dreams in which I'm involunarily flying--I can even feel the sensation of motion while flying (it can be pretty terrifying). A few months ago I sensed someone standing over me. Oh yeah, and in the one I had this morning, while I was flying I could hear a million voices and lots of psychotic sounding babbling all around me. I figured I had fallen asleep with the TV on, but when I woke up my apartment was silent. It kind of creeped me out, though I think that I realized for a while that I was dreaming and was able to gain some control over what was going on in the dream temporarily. So, does anyone know the causes of this?
I Found This Was Pretty Helpful: " Sleep paralysis is now being studied as an explanation for terrors in the night, which have been experienced by people across all cultures and for thousands of years. If one is looking for a purely physical and scientific explanation for these terrible nightmares, this one works quite well. For some it will offer relief but for others, doubt. Sleep paralysis is a condition in which someone, most often lying in a supine (face up) position, about to drop off to sleep, or just upon awaking from sleep realizes that s/he is unable to move, or speak, or cry out. This may last a few seconds or several moments, occasionally longer. People frequently report feeling a 'presence' that is often described as malevolent, threatening, or evil. An intense sense of dread and terror is very common. The presence is likely to be vaguely felt or sensed just out of sight but thought to be watching or monitoring, often with intense interest, sometimes standing by, or sitting on the bed. On some occasions, the presence may attack, strangling and exerting crushing pressure on the chest. There are a number of historical and urban cultural myths, which can be, somewhat, explained by this experience. The Incubus, which appears in ancient literature, is one such example. In the book Incubus by Kiessling, It was described as half man half beast, attacking in the night. The word night "mare" has been derived from the word incubus. In Greek it was ephialtes, in Latin incubus, in German mar/mare, in Old English maire, Old Norse mara, Old Irish mar/mor, and all mean "one who leaps on, oppresses or crushes." The demon of the night has also been called 'The Old Hag' a description and myth coming out of several cultures. The Old Hag was described in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The Old Hag attack is most closely associated with extreme pressure on the chest while sleeping on your back. People may also feel like they are being choked or even bitten. In his research, Al Cheyne of the University of Waterloo has discovered that between 25 and 30 per cent of the population reports that they have experienced at least a mild form of sleep paralysis at least once. It most often has an adolescent onset but can begin at any age. Cheyne believes sleep paralysis to be an hallucination created by physical things occurring in the body as a result of a dysfunction or malfunction of the normal R.E.M. state of sleep. This malfunction may be brought on by life stressors or sleep deprivation. Cheyne has also discovered a much higher incidence of sleep paralysis for those who sleep on their back. He has found that changing sleep position can reduce the incidence of these nightmares. He also suggests getting up and physically moving around after having an episode as several can occur in one night. " Stressed And Deprived Of Sleep, Thats About The Only Time I Get Now.
well I got something similar to that... I was in this paralysed state, and then suddenly I fell in a dream, and in the dream I just started to float... it felt great, and then I came back to my room and astral traveled... you were really close from coming out of your body as far as Im concerned.
Yeah I've had this happen to me sometimes. I remember even once I was on my side and could see outside through my window while it was raining. I also moved outside, as if a camera would zoom in to show the movement to the outdoors. But my body wouldn't move. Whenever I woke up shortly after, it was raining outside and my blinds were closed....so that was weird. Other times I have panicked but never felt a presence in the room while it was happening.
It's happened to me a bunch of times, always linked to the times when I'm doing alot of consciousness exploration with ecstasy as the medium. The presence is terrifying but what scared me the most was when I was in bed with my boyfriend of the time- a couple of years back, and when I woke up, I could see him lying awake and the side of the room behind him. I tried to call out to get him to move me, because I knew the slightest movement would get me back to my body, but all I could do was breathe a bit louder. He turned, looked at me frowning then shook me to wake up, then I was able to move again. The scary thing was, he said my eyes were closed and I was convulsing, so thats why he woke me up. I'd levitated a couple of times as a kid and have been able to lucid dream before I took any drugs so it wasn't so much the fact that it was a clearly out of body thing, its always the feeling of being watched by some sinister source of terror that can't allow me to not panic and use it to astral travel. But I have only experienced it like 10 or so times, and only in the sporadic periods when I take a lot of MDMA. Wonder if thats a connection anyone else has had?
This has been a problem for me for a loooonnnngggg time. The last one I had was about a year ago, and I had my first presence in the room, or hallucinations. There was a giant Bird in the room that kept throwing boomerangs at me. I was terrified until I threatened him in my mind and he left.
i had a HUGE one last night just as i was about to go to bed. I felt myself slip into it but there was nothing i could do. This time it had lasted about 45-60 seconds and the scary part was the different voices surrounding my bed. Its so interesting.
This is so werid... Out of my friends, they say i have the most instense and weridest (watching a documtery about peoples heads choped in half in a moive theater and still alive, and many more.) This happened to me acouple of times. The first one happened to me when i was young. It was werid i woke up, eyes wide open. I couldn't move it was so hard to move. I heard some noices (not 100% sure) and i seen something out of the corner of my eye. So i was freaked out and i did the only thing i can do, close my eyes and hope to god it ends. I wake up sometime later or just a second later (had no clock in my room at the time). But i ran into my parents bedroom, laid in my moms bed and told her i was abucted by aliens .... In the morning my mom asked me what i said to her at night about computers. I just said nevermind dont worried aobut it.... Also the second time this happen to me, i dont know if this counts, or wasn't a dream. But I was dreaming, I was on the edge of the bed or something. But I was sleeping on my side and I felt this "force" or tug on my bed sheet. What i can remeber it was like a old hag, something in the mix of a pal old woman, and my mom (I totally cant remeber but i remeber seeing a womans face and registering as my mom) , but i decribe it as a "demon". The weirdest thing that was it was chanting something to me... I wish i can remeber it. Fuck i cant even remeber i word of it now... Also on the same night or before or after, i had this realistic dreams of my room haveing a spirit. It was so weird (also i remeber this happen to me when i was young and hearing my "room" calling my name, cant be to sure if it was my brother). It was strange thou, i couldnt sleep in that room with the "spirit", it was always talking to me and bugging me in my dream. At one point in the dream i dared not to go back into my room... Weird stuff, I wonder how these dreams are formed. Is it like some kind of drug like DMT or some other natural produceing drug in our brain. Anywho, I need to sleep (nice topic to end the day ), i hope you like my rambleing. But good night and and have a nice day... Peace and love
sometimes it's associated with narcolepsy.......i have all kinds of sleep issues and a neurolgist told me this....................................peace
Well It happened to Me The Other Day...At School. There Is A Couch In This Really Dark And Quit Room and I Was Really Tired And I had Sometime Before My Next Class (I Go To A Private School Type Thing) So I Decided to Sit Down And I Ended Up Falling Asleep. I Felt The 'Presence' But I Identified It As My Sister (She Was at School Too). And I Was very Aware Of My Suroundings I just Simply Could Not Wake Up...Ah Well Just Thought Id'e Share...
I had it after taking a bunch of percocets a few nights ago, and when I went into it I was smoking a ciggarette in bed next to my girlfriend, and I dropped it in between us and I couldnt move to get it, then as usual I snapped out of it after a minute, and I had not been smoking at all. Pretty cool! This kind of episode happened to me a few years ago, I fell asleep at a friends house on a couch listening to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis, and I woke up and took a hugh gulp of whiskey, listening to a really short song on that album, and when I layed back down I woke up again, and the song had just started over and there was no whiskey anywhere, although I could taste it and I felt buzzed. Weird!
