That's right. If they did 1081 more tests, they would actually catch up with us!

The US is in the process of updating it's nuclear arsenal...developing a new generation of warheads.

See, for one thing most coountries with nuclear weapons are stable countries where you don't have have nutjob leaders with horribly repressive regimes who's people live in the stone age basically. Yes, countries have nuclear weapons, doesn't mean everyone should though, especially the likes of Kim. The world, both the nuclear powers and the 188 countries that signed the NNPT don't want any more nuclear powers in the world. Some people say it's hypocritical for 8/9 countries to have nuclear weapons but tell the rest of the world not to, but I think it's alot worse to just let any country who wants them have them.

In view of the way we live, our economy would be shattered if our military wasn't strong. Look at the Carter years. Weak military = inflation, high interest rates, unemployment.

Obviously not but if we went to Iraq to give that country a democracy then would it be that much different if we ousted Kim and the dictatorship over there. This whole situation just makes the U.S. look very foolish for going to Iraq, while also making us look very vulnerable. The world is going to change in the coming months and years and I'm not so sure for the better.

definately not for the better.....maybe a 2nd Dark age?

Korea is a touchy subject...Kim is literally a madman, his dad was too. His dad diefied himself and raised Kim to believe that he was a god on earth. we cant sanction them...those poor people already have a miserable existence. i think we should just take a group of special forces, sneak in Pyongyang, snuff out Kim, and unite the whole Korean peninsula. But that'll never happen

    In this old hippie's opinion;
Should we attach N.Korea? = no (nor anyone else)
If N.Korea attachs S.Korea, Japan, or anyone else should we (the rest of the world) "take them out" = then yes, the world must no longer allow one country to attach another, and that includes the USA attaching _________. <- fill in the blank.

Also I agree with something High DeserHippie said, "In view of the way we live, our economy would be shattered if our military wasn't strong. Look at the Carter years. Weak military = inflation, high interest rates, unemployment." Not sure about the Carter years. But if US military spending were cut as I wish it would be, it would have to be done somewhat slowly. When you look at the ridiculous amount of military spending, remember a lot of that translates to someone's family income. Does everyone know that the USA spends more on military spending than THE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED !!! Realistically, for the forseeable future, we'll need a strong military, but ridiculous is ridiculous. Sorry, drifted off topic.

    Peace,

The Korean peninsula could actually never be reunited for a quite a while because of the economic differences.

   .

In the late 70s, the economy in most developed nations was in a complete downturn for many reasons (re: OPEC), not for lack of military spending.

Hasn't anybody told you that Keynes is dead?

You honestly think there are any countries worse than the US in terms of:
    1)Not respecting Westphalian principles
    and
    2)Not following Geneva conventions

If I was Kim I'd be working my ass off getting nukes too - considering another nuclear power is making nothing but threatening remarks to me.

The reason the US is numero uno is the military. We really don't do anything better than anyone else except build, sell, and deploy weapons.

I don't know about that, could be true. But I lived in Europe for the last 2 1/2 years of the 1960s. I saw first hand how far apart economically East & West Germany were, now they're united and economically stronger than ever. And, may I add, re-united without a war.

Again I partially agree, no one builds, sells & deploies "better" (or more) weapons than the US, but we do other things too.

Statistically? We have to make a lot of stuff because we use a lot of stuff. But our stuff costs more and isn't as good. And I believe S. America is outdoing us on food production now.

I said we don't do anything better than anyone else, except weapons. I meant like the French make the best wine, Germans the best cars, and Americans the best weapons.

Without a big military, the oil countries would put us out of business. We maintain that market artificially, which maintains our fat economy.

Korea may not have the bomb after all.
Scientists are unable to detect radiation over North Korea.
It appears that Kim is shooting blanks again.:&

Your absolutely right that Kim Jung Il has to be ousted but that doesn't mean killing innocent Koreans. And China and Russia will not allow a U.S. invasion. So its a tough situation right now because we just can't say the hell with it and start a war and we also can't turn our backs. Only time will tell at this point.
