The thing I find sketch in the OP is the sellers reluctance for the buyer to come and see the cat in its current environment. I would go for a shelter cat rather than a purebred. But if you are interested buying a cat from a private party, you should go check out the environment in which it was raised as well as looking at the cat before purchase.
At no point during the process of inquiring with the shelter about taking on a cat from there was I told that I'd have to pay any money for the cat. It wasn't until the day the cat was actually brought to my flat by a shelter worker that I was told I had to give 40 pounds (64 dollars) for the cat's vet fees whilst he was in the shelter. Luckily I had the money, and I gave it to the woman who brought him. But I find it very irresponsible that I wasn't told anything about having to pay money, until the cat was actually brought to my flat. What would have happened if I didn't have the money? I had been in contact with the shelter around 4 times before the cat was brought to my flat, so they had ample opportunity to alert me to the issue of payment days before he arrived. I had the money, and I really wanted the cat, so I didn't debate the issue when it was sprung on me out of the blue. However, if I hadn't had the money, it wouldn't have been fair to me, or the poor cat. I hope most shelters are better run, that's for sure...
Yeah, that's pretty irresponsible of them. They need the money, but would piss off serious adoptees less if they said it upfront. Otherwise it sort of sounds like a hostage situation.... here, you can have this nice cat you chose, if you pay me, or else I go gas it... Here it's like a hundred bucks, flat. But if you're always at the shelter, or volunteering, or anything like that, they'll work something out. They press un-adoptable cats on my family because they volunteer. I got my (highly adoptable and sought after) chihuahua free, technically I think she's still at the shelter, but.... she's mine, and has been for years. If you ask for so-called un-adoptable pets, there's often nice ones with a trait that could be un-desirable, but that might not be a dealbreaker. If they won't just sign the paper on an animal that they'd otherwise gas, they're hostage-taking monsters. Anyway OP, I think 300 should get a REAL persian with papers, not the offspring of a couple of cast-off almost-pure lemons, so to speak. And if she didn't want you seeing them, well..... FUCK that. Tell her you'll take one for free when she can't find any suckers. Go to a pound, pick a nice cat that looks like you want. You're just as likely to find a run-away or abandoned close-to-pure persian at the pound, as for 300 bucks from some con-artist. Long hair is long hair, sweet cats are sweet cats. The paper saying its parents where part of a special club doesn't even particularly say too much, IMO.
AHEM, When You Visit A Pound, You Don't Pick A Cat, You Just Walk Around Looking At Them Until A Cat Picks You.... Cheers Glen.
Those un-papered purebreds usually aren't. Plus, show breeding pulls too many family lines together, amplifying the good, but also the weakness in a line.
this is such an extremist way of looking at it. what would happen to that cat she's selling then, too? i could even go out on a limb and say if you go to the shelter, and you pick an orange kitty, you're condemning the black kitty to death. come on. there's so many cats running free in my neighborhoods, there's so many kittens running around too, and they never had a home. then petsmart scoops em up and sells em @_@ weird.
it's not an extremist way of looking at it. purebred cats WILL be bought and a home WILL be provided for them only because they are designer breeds. tabby cats in shelters only have a certain amount of days before they have to be put to sleep. also, petsmart doesn't 'sell' the cats. they spay/neuter them, give them basic medical care, and charge an adoption fee to cover medical expenses. educate yourself before you speak.
jesus christ, get off your high horse. sorry about my semantics. seems pretty trivial to argue that point. i actually am fully aware of what they do with the kitties. (i volunteer at petsmart as a professional petter) (seriously, not kidding. thats what they call us) OP stated, no one seemed interested in buying these kitties, purebred status or not. whatever your point- this person wants a certain type of kitty, they're free to purchase that kitty without the constant badgering because they didn't buy the pet from a shelter. i found my cat in an alley, because my neighborhood is full of them. but some people don't want a skinny little tabby cat, they want whatever they want. my dogs are from the shelters, do i get a medal? they live a happy life, i have two puppies. people say "don't buy a dog from a puppy mill! buy from a shelter." well shit, puppy mill sounds worse to me than a shelter.
The difference between the puppy mill and the shelter is what buying the puppy does. Get a puppy from the shelter, the shelter gets a little change to keep running and saving/caring for animals. Get a puppy from a mill, and the nasty owners keep turning out more sad puppies from a sad environment to add to a world with too many puppies. The owners are literally getting money, to, indirectly, to have nice puppies killed, because there are already enough for everyone.
why would you 'volunteer' at petsmart? seems like a waste of time. you should try the humane society of SPCA or whatever animal welfare organization you have near you.
Not necessarily. I had a Maine Coon that was completely silent for 17 years, and then started talking and continued talking for the next two years.
i suppose. but the thing is: there are already enough for everyone. aside from those coming up (which most of us aren't) everyone's already at a load they can handle. a friend of mine bought a sweet puppy from a shelter the other day. the poor thing was so cowardly and afraid of everyone, its going to be awhile before she's comfortable in company. supposedly there was an abusive caretaker AT the shelter. a volunteer, i believe. so that's just fucking dandy. goddam volunteering to beat the shit out of some helpless animals. augh. its bullshit even more; one of the dogs (that had been rescued from an abusive home) did infact fight back. bit the asshole volunteer. this volunteer played stupid until someone looked into it, and figured out why this dog had bitten him. they euthanized the dog because they assumed it was just a touchy dog, which may have been the case, if it hadn't been entirely provoked by this scumbag volunteer. i'm working on a 'closest to home' basis. obviously its not a waste of time if some joy comes out of it.
