As long as handguns are being made no reason to outlaw them either. Concealed carry holders have a lower crime rate than the population at large and you can't stop a criminal from carrying a handgun.

Banning guns would ensure that only criminals had them.

The poll results on this question are quite pleasing, but also quite surprising.

Most often it appears the trend here is towards greater government control, and less toward individual freedom. Maybe it's just because guns are not seen as a rich versus poor issue.

    ooh, aren't you clever?

You know what else is arms? A stick of wood.

My point about long guns being sufficient to fulfill the allowance of the 2nd amendment gets knocked out by some smart-ass snot-nose who thinks he can be clever by pretending not to get the point.

If you take guns away from law abiding citizens then the only ones who will possess weapons will be criminals. Or even if you are a law abiding citizen you will be labeled a criminal for owning a gun, kinda bullshit I think.

Take them away from criminals too. Naturally, that means controlling arms manufacturing and sales, stringent policing and punitive measures against those who think they can continue to possess.

It's a lot easier just to keep it the way it is. Screw all those people who get shot by the thousands every year - the majority by handguns and automatic weapons (not too many from hunting rifles, ay) - America's number one in gun violence and we like it that way!

How do we control the manufacture and sale of guns being imported from other countries?

Gun control for criminals is kind of funny. If a guy is willing to kick in someones door and hold them captive while taking their stuff (hope that is all they take) I don't think they will be too worried about another minor felony tacked on for good measure.

One thing about all legal gun owners I can say is they are not convicted felons. Most of them are significantly above the poverty level too.

The people against guns are the ones that never shot them :)

Having a gun for home defence is not the same as carrying around a concealed handgun. And punitive measures is synonomous with 'minor felony' to you?

i have this theory that taking stuff away, making it illegal, is akin to an animal going extinct. once that animal is extinct the whole ecosystem is off kilter. it creates imbalance. in the case of firearms, what good are we taking out of the system? my father and i used to spend a lot of time shooting just for fun. from there my interest in metalwork grew after looking at how guns were made hundreds of years ago.

I carry a concealed handgun most every day. By your logic I should be protected at my house. A place where with the press of button on my ADT pad I can summon the police in about 10 min. They have my address and everything!

But a lot can happen in 10 min.

As for carrying my gun, most people are the victim of a crime while they are away from their home. Do you honestly feel that a human does not have the right to be secure or defend themselves.

And no matter how you slice it the laws for committing a crime while armed are not harsh enough, but I honestly have to say that if you commit a crime armed or unarmed it should carry the same (heavier) penalty. But, no I don't think a random tweeker would worry about the legality of committing a crime while armed.

The only way I see it improving is to pull out the death penalty more for blatant and viscous crimes to a person.

All in all, those that advocate for more gun restrictions or banning them all together is just another example of people telling me what I can not do. I don't really like that. Limit guns for people like myself all you are doing is making it easier for criminals while punishing the guy that OBEYS THE LAW.

    Good debate =)

Guns are easy to make. Anyone with a tool shop and basic knowledge of firearms and metal working can make a functional pistol if they have enough incentive, and a giant black market is incentive.

    Plus:

Considering the fact since the early 90's violent crime rates have dropped dramatically during the same period most states have changed their laws to allow for concealed carry. Now on one hand this could be an argument to support the effectiveness the possibility of knowing anyone on the street can be legally carrying greatly reduces the risk of attack, or on the other hand the more logical answer is gun laws, whether they be for tightening or lessening of firearm regulation has no real effect on crime one way or the other.

Exactly. Make the law harsh. It's an integral part of gun control. Not with you on the death penalty. But that brings us to another aspect of the legal system that needs reforming - the prison system.

As for 'telling me what to do', grow up. People tell us what to do our entire lives.

Post after post just keeps saying the same basic thing - it's too hard. We have to change too many things to make a difference in how thousands get shot every year.

Greatest nation in the world. Right.
