Thanks all, the main cabin is bigger. These were an idea for singles or couples with no kids. Trying to think of a type of heat for them though, maybe a small propane tank or 30 gallon drum converted into a woodstove.

What you have so far sounds great :)

Weather sounds great for growing, land is perfect with the woods, fantastic eco living!

Wish you all the luck in the world and hope you'll keep us updated on how things are going?

If you're thinking of it as an indoor earth oven type stove, you might end up with cooler water, but if thats the case it wouldn't be too hard to repeat another heater coil outside off the smokestack to compensate.

If you dont need the hot water source for dishes / showers etc. you could make it a closed loop system, run it through some baseboard heating or re-circulatory lines under the floor.
This way, when the t-stat in the room kicks on, it starts a screw feeder for your pelletized sawdust, wood chips or Biochar into the burn chamber.

And if you do build it, remember to keep an access panel on one end so you can pull it out for service/ cleaning on occasion.

Lot's of little variations can be made to the basic principal.

Your setup sounds awsome. I've been looking to setup something like this myself here in the UK. The land you have sounds perfect, soil sounds good, weather great too.

Please keep the forum updated on your progress.....I see a trip out there on the cards to see how your getting on ;-)

I might be interested in a couple of years but are you open minded about having someone with physical problems living there? I have experience with raising farm animals. For example goats become crippled if their hooves are not trimmed regularly. I physically can not trim goats hooves anymore but I have had goats, ducks, geese, rabbits, chickens, horses, pigs and cows in my past. They require consistent care. People need to wake up in the early morning to take care of their needs and in the early evening at a consistent time. The trick is not taking on to much at one time. When I lived like that there were some who worked off the farm and some who stayed home and tended the farm. The reason the commune my mom lived on did not work is because they took on to many farm animals at once. Everyone tried to live in the same house and some people worked harder than others. Which caused a lot of tension. Even though I have physical problems I can do other things like develop a website for the farm, mass produce my arts and crafts to sell, and I have a lot of past experience to share. I get RSDI for my disability and I could pitch in a little financially. I also spin and weave and I can share that knowledge as well.

    Hi Jay And Leslie -

I'm trying to stay in touch with you all, so's I can drive out there in the near future and meet you and hang out for a few weeks, maybe, and pitch in to help out with whatever you're doing right now.

Did you all just make that cabin in the photo? Really nice.

I don't need any of that for just a short first stay. I can just live and work out of my trust camper van for that.

I'm planning on leaving here ( Va. Beach) in a few weeks to head out that way to check out your place and maybe a few more, so please do get back to me when you can.

Just exactly where are you there in S.E Virginia ? what county ? That would help a lot for my planning.

Are you all digging any gardens just yet ? Or is that stuff a ways off ???

I have also tried to contact you outside of HF, and emailed you directly.

    Best Regards,

    Chuck

    Hi Jason ...

Hope it's all going well there. Just to remind me, what county are you all in in SW Virginia ? if you don't mind.

Have you ever considered a small fish farm? I will send you a link to a UTUBE video, showing how this guy in the heart of suburban LA uses his backyard pool to produce a huge amount of panfish, in this rather ingenious method using chickens , and it produces a huge amount of fish like crappie or bream, they are called "talapia" and they reproduce like crazy.

Do you all have any decent streams or ponds, free water, etc. ? Any decent fishing there or close by?

You probably have a ton of deer wandering around. They are easy to bag and eat, and you can eat like kings with a few deer now and then.

IF I ever get out there, we'll all be eating like kings with big thick New York Strip steaks every night ( deer steaks)... yummmmmmmm yummmmmm..

    very best

    chuck

Hey Chuck, We have thought about aquaponics. We dont have a lake or pond but tons of fresh water springs. We have been talking about digging a pond.
As for deer there are hundreds here, I am the only person that has hunted this land for over 25 years. We also have wild turkey and rabbit all over, noone could ever go hungry here.

We are in a rural county called Scott County,Va. close to about an hour from Bristol.
