Was the example you provided supposed to demonstrate the apparent balding effect crocheting has on peoples' scalps you were talking about earlier?

To the OP, I backcombed and my sections were all around 3/4" give or take a half inch. However big your sections are depends entirely on personal preference.

i didn't brush my (naturally curly) hair for a month, then just loosely backcombed the sections that naturally formed to give em a head start. didn't take very long and they're basically natural, i almost wish i hadn't backcombed at all since it prob would have done the same thing and i could say that i went totally natural and earn some mad props or whatever

Aren't these harsh partings just from some very recent tight sectioning, rather than any thinning that has occurred over time?

^^Almost certainly yes, if you look carefully there's rubberbands/twine (can't quite make it out) at all of the roots.

I'm not saying that the thing he's describing doesn't happen, just that the picture isn't backing up his point...if the internet was really so full of these terrible things happening, surely it wouldn't be too hard to find an appropriate pic :p

no, i don't mean new dreads, i mean like, really mature OLD dreads.... maybe it's just because they're brittle and they start to break off and then there's like, a gap there?

headsyoulive, i think if one keeps the sections ripped apart and twisted/locked tightly near the roots the balding could happen. i've seen it with african twisted locks or even african hair that is braided very tightley for years. there will be bald spots.

im not too crazy on the idea of having bald spots on me in the next few years.... maybe it doesn't happen to everybody.... SE doesn't look like he has bald spots.... and i don't want congo dreads. no offense to anyone, but they're just not for me.... maybe all the loose hairs need to be left alone to make new dreads instead of forcing them into the exisiting ones though....

I don't mind if mine congo-just not to the point of pulling at my scalp and hurting. But bald spots-think I'd cry:(

maybe it has something to do with how thick your hair is to begin with.... maybe how many dreads you have .... i don't know. i just keep having nightmares about balding spots all around my dreads. it sucks.

it think it's about tightness and like you said, HYL, about forcing hairs into the roots that should lock over time.

some people say that they have really brittle dreads to the point that they're actually BREAKING off.... maybe if that dryness starts to happen, it's an indication of baldness to come???

well, i guess it can't hurt to slather some aloe on weekly to make sure you locks stay moisturized and stop breakage.
