I say it and i didn't really notice it until me and some friends talked about how americans make fun of us for it. But it really is a great word to throw in at teh end of a sentance...That was an awesome night eh? I can't imagine saying it any other way.... That was an awesome night right? that was an awesome night do you agree? It's so wrong...
I think the "aboot" thing is stupid. I've never heard anyone say "aboot" unless they were purposefully making fun of americans for thinking we say it, or unless they were stoned as fuck
I never really said it until I started seeing it a lot on the internet, now I say it all the time. I don't know anybody that says it though.
The only people that say aboot in Canada are the cops, at least that's what I've noticed, I don't know why but they just do. Other than that nobody says aboot!
I think I've heard it on "kids in the Hall" and some other Canadian comedies. Its eastern thats why..... where are all the maritimers?
I say eh all the time. and whenever I speak to people from U.S they tease me about how I say 'about'. I don't think it sounds funny but they seem to. lol
Ive been travelling the U.S for 6 or 7 months, I think Ive lost my "eh" a little, seems to come out when I drink a lot more, I know what you mean about yank's teasin the canadian accent, Ive been called can igger a few times..... well least I dont say "HUH" or "duh"
Who cares what the yanks think? On the rare occasions they think at all? I don't use the expression 'eh!', not that I'm aware of. It adds nothing. It seems to ask for a response, and that can be irritating to the listener who doesn't want to respond. A German teacher I had in high school liked to close her sentences with "Nicht wahr?" (not true?), which is quite similar. Once again, 'eh!' is irritating and adds nothing to the conversation.
I use it alot, but I never realize it unless I'm in the States or in Europe. Then they always point it out. I never point out to americans that they say ruff or huh or y'all thought. I did point it out to my ex (who now lives in the deep south of usa) the last time I spoke to her how her whole accent is now southern yank now. She laughed at me and said "Huh, Y'all think so? I think I sound the same." I replied "I rest my case."
Some guys are having this argument, "Is God Black or White?" So they go up to a mountain top and start praying, "Please, God, reveal Yourself." After about seventy-two hours a thunderstorm moves in, thunder and lightning sound, and a voice is heard from on high. "I IS THE LORD!" That about settles it.
I say it on occasion... but it's strange because Canadians have this rep for using "eh," but I've heard many Americans and other English-speakers using it too! It just rolls off your tongue sometimes, eh?
