    on anouther note
and back to the original question
safer with or without gun control
    certainly safer with!!
    and we already have it!
i certainly believe that a unstable person should not just beable to walk into a store and buy a gun!
but you peeps also seem to think that a gun? means a hand gun! meant for killing pepole and only pepole
    your talking apps and orangss
you would not feel safer in fact over time after you gave all of your "GUNS" to the peeps and the queens and kings you would feel a whole lot less safe!!
because you would be their SUBJECTS and you would have given your life for them to manage yes you brits are such a peaceful pepole, not!!!

that is called civil war. you dont fight civil wars with the grade of armament you are able to purchase.

some of you ppl here have a VERY very strange fiew of "gouverment" and "people" - is it possible this has to do something with the strange voting system in the US?

in my country, the ppl directly vote who is in the parliament, senate, president and so on. so, even if for some reason the gouverment suddenly begins to take actions against its own ppl, you can savely assume that this wont be only the army acting and supporting these actions, but also your neighbor, some of your friends.... the gouverment isnt a seperate body in your country, its always part of it, and there are ALWAYS ppl supporting it - no, "the gouverment" cant stay in power if "ppl" dont want it.

if you say you need weapons because of the gouverment being untrustworthy, you better be ready to shoot at and kill some of your neighbors and friends, maybe even family too.

btw, keep in mind that not every country calling itself democracy is one - however, even then, there are ALWAYS supporters among the common ppl.

but you know which place the royals have in britain, do you? politically speaking.

I'm glad you understand this. That's taking idealism a stage too far otherwise haha :) On a total civil war situation the simple man with a pistol or a hand gun could not survive for very long against a well trained soldier, or at least I would not imagine he would.

I apologise, this was a type error, I meant decriminalising guns, not gun crime. I didn't notice that error before.

As has been mentioned, this shows a lack of knowledge of British politics. Real lack of knowledge. Whoever said we'd give the guns to royalty? Since when do they control policing? Absolute rule by royalty in Britain has not been seen since the beheading of King Charles I some 400 years ago which established the supremacy of parliament. Surely you know this....right? And that even before this, parliament were eroding the powers of the monarchy. In conclusion, read up on British history before throwing illogical statements.

It would appear gun control is not working well in the UK despite law enforcements best efforts. It would seem that only the criminals have weapons now...

    story continues

Well, that is a given that only criminals have guns, seeing as guns are illegal and that would in turn make you a criminal to own one. Thus, every gun owner (apart from those who use it for sporting use) are criminals anyway.
Will take a look over your PDF link a little later. I am using a browser that does not support PDF right now.

But why should criminals only be allowed to have guns, where is the logic in this

And why should criminals themselves have them? Surely a way of taking a gun off the person of a criminal by police is better?

To be completely frank, I must admit I would not know how to tackle gun crime if I were ever in power especially in the UK. There would be so many obstacles.
    I) legalisation. Accusations thrown of creating US gun-culture and media watching every study of violent crime from there on. Mass scaremongering from media and opposition parties. Dublane story will be used against the ruling party. Mentally unwell and other dangerous individuals in soceity more able to access guns. Guns sold over the counter. Accusation of not solving the problem at the source.
II) decriminalisation. Same concerns from public and press of gun-culture and same possible scaremongering over violent crime increase. If there is a license this has to be written up. How easy would this be to forge? How would the state deal with all this? Accusations that problem had not been solved from the source.
III) stricter laws. Questions over what effect this has on detering criminals and level of buerocracy involved. What could possibly enhance one of the strictest set of firearms law in the world? Most likely full support from media and public though.

    How would you do it?

Again .. there is a major problem here in the logic of "The Army will protect us"

what happens if the Army decide to take control of everything for themselfs? - now we have a unarmed country with trained miltary men with guns telling the people what to do ... its about as fair as a sheep vs a human being

How does this work, criminals already have guns, plenty of access to guns, the police don't go around walking up to people doing random gun searches. The police are minutes away when seconds matter

But I then ask you this. How would you fix the problem? What would you do to prevent criminals obtaining a gun but still allowing the common man to own one? Seriously, because I don't see how this ideal can be reached. In an ideal world no-one would ever need a gun. but how to achieve this?

To be fair, even if every man was armed, the common man could not compete against a well trained military force. It's just not feasible.

to be honest, i failed to read that in the thread. beside that, the army in most democratic countries will not be used in the country itself. the LAW is enforced by the police and other law enforcement organisations, not the army, which usually has its own laws to follow.

btw, if you think private guns can challenge a professional military, you are giving in to wishful dreams.

If it isn't working then why is gun crime so rare in the UK compared to the US? Why do criminals often use fake guns or converted replicas if real guns are so easy to get?
