I've been brought to tears by music, but oddly enough it wasn't even a sad song. I can't remember what it was, but it made me cry because it was so amazingly good.

    ...official loser here. haha

This song makes me tear up everytime i hear it
it reminds me of my grandma for some reason, i have no idea why. She's not even dead or anything....but for sure, What a Wonderful World makes me cry. Sometimes a happy cry, sometimes a sad....other than that umm i'll go with

Mother by John Lennon....the father part is exactly me and my dad. uurrrgghhh this song makes me hate my dad.

Imagine makes me really sad too...definitely the most powerful song ive ever heard.

One of the songs that makes me the most sad is "Heart With Out A Home" by Nick C because I can definately relate to it...and just watching him sing it and be so emotional...it got to me. lol

When Angels Cry by Janis Ian

Wait, your tired arms must rest
    So let this moment pass
    Wait until the morning
Close your eyes and you will see
    Who you used to be
    Left without a warning
Who knew one so big could grow so small
Lighter than the writing on the wall

When angels cry, can I stand by
When stones weep, can my heart sleep
Wish I'd never heard, wish I'd never heard
    Wish I'd never heard
the power of a four letter word

'Cause only love will matter in the end
for a woman or a man
    What's the difference now
    Here we live with bottles
    and needles and truth
    Here is your living proof
    that death cannot be proud
Some say it's a judgement on us all
I can't believe that God could be that small

When angels cry, can I stand by
When stones weep, can my heart sleep
Wish I'd never heard, wish I'd never heard
    Wish I'd never heard
the power of a four letter word

If ever was a rose that longed to bloom
If ever was a heart that longed to fly
If ever was an angel, it was you
So close your eyes and say goodbye
    Goodbye

When angels cry, I can't stand by
When stones weep, I can't sleep
    Guess I've finally learned
    Guess I've finally learned
    Yes, I've finally learned
that love is just a four letter word
Hope is just a four letter word

I saw Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) live at the Royal Albert Hall and when they played Telegraph Road (my all time favourite song) and Brothers in Arms they both brought tears to my eyes. Brothers in Arms is such a sad song.

I think the whole of the Wall would have to be in my list too...possibly as the saddest, most depressing album any band has ever written.

Eva Cassidy, Celebration. This song is singing about two old people that are in love, and how they never thought they'd get that old. This is especially sad because Eva Cassidy died of cancer when she was young, before anyone knew anything about her, she has the most beautiful voice too.

Lastly, Wolf at the Door by Radiohead. listen to it...

interesting talking about music that makes you feel sad, Barber's Adagio for Strings has been voted the saddest piece of music ever written. I agree, although for many different reasons. It was played at Princess Diana's funeral, but i remember thinking before that how sad it was, it was also played at some events after 9/11. It's just so sad.
I wonder it Samuel Barber was sad when he wrote it...

something about this song is just profoundly heart-breaking everytime i hear it. the music is poignant by itself- i always think that it would be one of the saddest songs ever no matter which language it was in or which language you spoke

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot

for those who know the song it also has a very haunting melody

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy.

With a load of iron ore - 26,000 tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconson
As the big freighters go it was bigger than most
With a crew and the Captain well seasoned.

Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ships bell rang
Could it be the North Wind they'd been feeling.

The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the Captain did, too,
T'was the witch of November come stealing.

The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashing
When afternoon came it was freezing rain
In the face of a hurricane West Wind

When supper time came the old cook came on deck
Saying fellows it's too rough to feed ya
At 7PM a main hatchway caved in
He said fellas it's been good to know ya.

The Captain wired in he had water coming in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went out of sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her.

They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

    Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the ruins of her ice water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams,
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.

    And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
    In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral
The church bell chimed, 'til it rang 29 times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they say, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.
