I'd say it would depend on the culture. In some, it was probably because the menstrual period is revered as sacred, and a time for a womyn to be with her peers, away from the demands of men and children. In other cultures, it could be that it was viewed as shameful and dirty, and they wanted the womyn away where they wouldn't "contaminate" the village.

In the Maori culture, men use to consider the female body to be quite sacred, 'specially her sexual organs, as they give life. The head also. If a woman stepped over a mans head, menstrating or not, the man would be dishonored. Theres a long story that goes with that, very long indeed.]its a Maori myth about the demi-god named Maui who tried to cheat death by re-entering his mothers womb and died, therefore maori class the female organs and what ever comes out of it as very Tapu (taa/poo) or sacred.
theres some info in this link under the sub-heading:
The notions of Mana (maa/naa), Tapu (taa/poo), and Utu (oo/too) http://www-frame.ome.meisei-u.ac.jp/isc/janta/publications/sample.html

Oh please. Not everyone preceives the world as you do. I think you are just limited spiritually, and you really have no clue what you are talking about. It CAN be whatever YOU want it to be. But do not tell other sisters who have a strong connection with the universe other wise. We are not pretending.

Opinions are nice, but it seems that when you post you seem to negate other peoples lives due to your limited perception. Just don't even bother posting.

BTW Sisters, I was recommended a very very good book. Havent read it yet, but it is called the Red Tent. Click this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0312195516/qid=1098338891/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/102-7103521-8570503?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

    I may read it.

Applespark, I definately am interested in that Shakti Book! :)

    - I believe that bleeding is beautiful- (yea it can be a pain in the ass among other parts...but -)if u look at it in a open way- U can ,anyone can see the truth and relevance of this thread...

becoming one with womyn as womyn become one with their innerselves, their spirits and the Universe...

I agree Maggie Sugar, wouldn't it be nice? Just go off, relax, get in tune with yourself and your sisters... *sighs dreamily* oh well! BTW, I read the Red Tent last summer and absolutely loved it. It was awesome, and made me look at womyn and menstruation (among other things) in a very different way.

Also I have read that women use o be alowed to have their homonal changes without scrutany. They were let to have their "bitchy moments" because thats' w hat they were supose to be doing at that natural time. Now it's very missunderstood

Well, I think it's absolutely amazing how our bodies, as women, work. It's miraculous really. But do I believe the blood from my good ol' Aunt Flo is sacred? Um, no.

    Peace, love, and happiness...

My husband is very supportive in my "bitchy" times of the month. He understands it's a hormonal thing and that it's completely natural, so I'm lucky. :)

Do you know what I hate though? When guys blame EVERYTHING on pms. If you get cranky at them, you have PMS. Even if you completely and totally DON'T have pms, you still do. Like god forbid that maybe the men are being morons and pissing us off... no, it's gotta be pms. I hate the way society looks at that, like it turns us into psychopaths or something. I know I get a little emotional, but I certainly don't use it as an excuse to be horrible.

Um, I don't believe than menstruation is sacred (to me it isn't, at least), but I certainly don't feel that I'm spiritually limited. I've always found menstruation to be somethign that held me back - it's frustrating, I feel unpleasant during it, I have to use the washroom more often, and it costs a helluva lot (unless you go for the Keeper etc, but considering I don't have a credit card to order online...) My spirituality has more to do with the universe in general than to basic biologic changes.

I should note that I am on depo right now, so I haven't menstruated in a year and three months. To me, it is liberating, both mentally and financially ($7 for 3 months vs the cost of tampons etc.). But that is just my choice, and my take on it.... I certainly don't disagree with other women for the way they feel about their menstruation.

Yeah, when Bear does that I say, "I'm sorry if you are getting upset because I act like you for a couple of days out of the month, when you act that way every day." LOL!

I agree. I do consider myself a spiritual person, but my sprirtuality does not focus around or even include my uterus. I resent the fact that I have to go through hell every month whereas men don't. Before I got on the pill, I was bitter, angry, and frustrated with my body. Now, although I still have a period, things are much easier for me. But I do not feel that I should have to accept my body giving me pain and agony for no productive purpose.

Both ihmurria and you and certainly entitlted to your opinions. But that doesn't mean that womyn who want to celebrate this event in their lives shouldn't be able to.

I don't understand why it would bother you that people would? It isn't hurting you at all. There are a lot of things I don't enjoy doing, but if they aren't harmful, it doens't bother me in the least if other people engage in them.

    Shrug. Why get so upset?

I agree...there are not enough of this in here. There is a lot of the same kinda sposts in this forum . I come I read I leave. Rarely post in womens issues. We always seem to have the same issues. Not to diss anyone cuz it's all good but...I want some deep roots to my woman ness. I knwo others crave it too. We are more then surface issues. Womens issues shuld have more like bonding experiences...because we all know we do so well when we get to bond with each other on a cosmic level.
