Definetly, there ARE better smaller fests. No, featherbean does not mean lightweight brain. lol. My name is Heather. As a kid...and still now, my mom calls me heather bean...children call me feather...so I just put two and two for a screen name. No...not the ingenius...however, I'm no dumb blonde.

    for whatever THAT'S worth, lol.
but back to topic, smaller festies, esp. established fests, will have a hardcore family element. Maybe it's an open family who will love having you join in the work in campsites or what have you, or maybe they have it down and adding another set of hands on site is crazy.
Bonnaroo is so big, so fast that that growing stage went by in a week!

lol I accept suggestions from everyone, mama. Yes, a more family environment is what I want. Defiently, adding more hands can be hectic. I'm more content doing whatever is most needed, even if it is leaving in peace and wandering around for a bit. lol. Wakarusa sounds nice...nice enough to travel from Kentucky. :)

i don't know what the deal is with people looking for "good vibes" at festivals. i had a great time and never felt like other people were in danger of ruining it. i think some of you expect to much in the way of "vibes". like you're going to go to some spiritual drum circle experience. bonnaroo is about music, and you can't really argue with a festival that draws over 70 bands that are all high quality. i think you have to start expecting some more mainstream acts to leak into our scene, not just at bonnaroo. last year cake played at langerado and john mayer at 10,000 lakes. those are two smaller festivals. bonnaroo will always mean quality bands, and i believe that even if they move away from jam bands it will still be great music. open up your eyes and realize that there is more out there than jam bands.

and btw, i don't know why radiohead wouldn't play the roo, it is one of the most coveted venues to play in america. not that i listen to everything rolling stone says, but they have listed bonnaroo is the best festival around and also one of the 50 defining moments of rock history.

so take your good vibes at a little festival, and i'll go to bonnaroo to see the best bands around in one place

'so take your good vibes at a little festival, and i'll go to bonnaroo to see the best bands around in one place'

Dude, WHAT is your problem, YOUR vibe is completely negative. Our eyes ARE open and THAT'S why we see what we see. Yes, music is the BIGGEST part, but it is NOT what it's all about. It's the PEOPLE as well. I don't give a fuck what band is playing, If I go to a festival where people are being VIOLENT and RUDE THAT spoils the good time I'M having. That makes MY experience there bad. I am glad you have had great times at Bonnaroo, and I hope you have a great one this come round. However, to completely tell the people who are having a bad time to "Take our good vibes elsewhere"..that is just BULLSHIT.

In fact, we HAVE taken our good vibes ELSEWHERE and it is because of this bad things happen to people, and this is the VERY REASON why the scene is going DOWN.

The PEOPLE are what MAKE the music, man, NOT the other way around. Music brings the people together, and if the people are too busy creating negative vibes and not taking care of their brothers and sisters AND their earth than the people have lost the vision.

As for Jam Bands, I would not go to a festival where I don't like the music. It is MY personal preference and it is the very reason (besides the people and the scene) that I go to festivals. To all the other bands that aren't jam bands, you don't have to go very far to find them. They're at your local record store. You won't see or hear any difference seeing them live. They'll be playing the same shit. And don't bother touring with them or seeing them more than once a year, it's the same shit for different concerts. This is why I prefer going to SEE Jam bands than the non. It's a different experience everytime. Good or bad depending on the PEOPLE and the VIBES.

I really hope Bonnaroo is everything you want it to be and I hope you have a GREAT time. I really do.

I thought in all bonnaroo was a half and half experence..the music and just being there was great but also the weather and all the people made it hard sometimes.I dont see why everyone was complaining about violence I dident see anyone at all being violent

Hippytrip, just because you didn't see it happen doesn't mean it didn't happen. I'm glad you didn't see any violence, I'm sure it would have upset you. but I DID see violence, a friend of mine got jumped and his shit stolen, I was walking down one of the streets and saw a couple of guys yell fowl things to a heavy girl who was wearing a bikinni. Down Shakedown I saw a bunch of ANGRY DRUNK white guys who WERE adults, definetly over the age of 25 circle this hippie boy, who I guess sold them some bunk mushrooms, screaming and cursing at this kid. Damn, you guys think I'm making this shit up? I SAW this shit happen and it greatly affected my decision of going back and my view of the crowds that Bonnaroo draws. I'm not trying to get any of you to NOT go to Bonnaroo. I am simply telling my story and explaining why I am deciding not to go. I hope that my story will help someone have a BETTER time at Bonnaroo if they go, or helps them decide to go elsewhere. Your choice is your choice, and mine is mine.

Hippytrip, I also agree with you. Bonnaroo for me was half and half. Being there and the music was a lot of fun. I met some very nice and very cool heads. I also saw a lot of negative shit as well. That's all I'm trying to say here dude.

    waka is a good show.

and as for people that just want a rock concert- have at it. I won't be there. so there's a seat for you.
For me music IS spiritual. That's why I go where I go and see who I see.
I am vibe chasing, and I'm not the only one--- look at the dead following and what it spawned.
I do drum in circles. I AM looking for that on a wider basis and it is there.
We just get crabby when someone craps in our "nests."
No not every show I see is a jam band, but most are.I know there is a lot out there. I've seen the Shankars (three), Zakir, Kodo, Colorado Symphony, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Afrocelt, STS9, Signal Path, KanNal, Ellis Paul--none of 'em jambands per se-- and that's just in two years.

Unfortunatly Bonnaroo 04 was the only one I went to. I plan on going this year as its only a few hours away. Last year was not by any means perfect, alot of frat boy types really bugging me, a bunch of my friends took some bad drugs they were sold and that was pretty bad. I still enjoyed the music however and met some nice people so it was not a bad experiance.

yeah I got that Krewe of Roo email too, what a racket. I like the music at Roo, but getting to be too much BS going along with it. We need a new unknown Bonnaroo, after only 3 short years. I might have to check Wakarusa again, hope it's cookin like last year.

I think it might just be getting too big. Plus, the price and long ride are big factors for me. Between the travel, ticket prices, and........other things.....I would likely blow my entire summer concert budget on one weekend. i could likely attend at least 2 or 3 smaller festivals for the price of that one, especially if they're closer to home (I'm from NY so tennesse is quite a schlep for me, about 14 hours I would say just to get there not to mention the 6 or more I'd probably have to sit in my car waiting in line to get in since I don't know the area and the backroads at all). I've never been to bonnaroo before but from what I hear from my southern friends, the vibe has been declining a bit every year since the original. I don't know, I still might change my mind if they come up with a phenomenal lineup, but I think I'll more likely stick to smaller and more local events (I hear tell the rainbow gathering may be in Pennsylvania this year?????)

I ran into an old aquaintence form high school recently who told me that she came to bonnaroo "just for the road trip" and complained about the heat, lack of shelter, and mud, there was nothing I could do but roll my eyes. If they're trying to attract more people outside of "the scene" you're gonna end up with more people who can't handle a little rough camping, rain, mud, heat, etc. She said she was so upset by the mud she didn't go see primus and I about lost it, lol.

hey, don't be too hard on her. Primus was one I actually stayed up to see, but they were way late past their posted time, and the mud and rain that night was horrendous. I was cold and wet from being soaked during the Dead, but I still waited forever for Primus, listening to Johnny Cash for about 1-1/2 hours on their tapefeed (kept wishing they would put on a new tape). I ended up missing Trey on Sunday night after a storm blew thru, and I was so exhausted....still getting shit about that. But at the time, just couldn't face anymore mud and crowds.
