Because of Tommy Hall, our band was influenced to have an electric jug player (mainly the jug is just a prop, just like Tommy's). We have also had the pleasure of opening for the Golden Dawn back in April this year (Denton TX & Ft. Worth) Mr. Kenny and the guys are a great bunch of fellows to be around. It was overwhelming to hear their compliments on how psychedelia isn't dead. As for Roky & the 13th floor elevators, you can pick up a box set (probably on ebay) from Collectables (www.oldies.com) of all 4 of their releases. You can also find copies of "Live at the Avalon" floating around aswell. There are also a plethera of TX psychedelic bands out there. Golden Dawn Red Krayolas Moving Sidewalks Shiva's Headband The Flatlanders Cold Sun The Yellow Payges Bubble Puppy Outhouse Moan <~~ oops how'd that get in there.
hiddendoor, i was just on your site and i noticed that you gave the psychedelic sounds of only 4 stars, why not 5? It's an essential album!
Hi Skelter Mines just one little opinion though. To be quite honest although I think Psychedelic Sounds is one of the most important (if not THE most important album ) in the whole psychedelic rock genre historically speaking I think it is far from the best. It set a template that can be heard in bands nearly forty years on. It's got some blindingly brilliant tracks, but it's also got some not so great tracks. Personally for me Easter Everywhere was their masterpiece album musically and psychedelically speaking, and was a massive leap forward from the debut, but like I said that's just one opinion. I do think Psychedelic Sounds of is essential for any psych collection and there's few psych fans would argue so hmmmm yeah maybe it does need five stars, it's one of those albums that I agree deserves 5 maybe. But on saying that there's many albums on the site that most would agree are utterly essential psych albums in any psych collection like the two CJ and the Fish ones in there and something like the Gandalf album, but that's were my own personal taste comes into the equation. All depends on what criteria you use to rate an album I guess. I try to be as balanced as possible, if it all went on personal taste there'd be many many more with 5 stars. So I use three basic criteria, influence within the genre, quality of the music and my own personal liking of it, but even then the first two are completely subjective. Also when you take something like Electric Music for The Mind and Body and Psychedelic Sounds I'm not sure I could guarantee to a someone not familiar with these albums that they provide an albums worth of pure head trip psychedelia because they clearly don't given the historical context these albums arrived in, blues, jugband, folk and British invasion sounds dominated many of the albums we retrospectively tag as psychedelic now. But if I was to recommend them purely on the influence within the genre then Electric Music... and Psychedelic Sounds.... would be two of the most important and 10 star material !!! There's been alot of so called definitive lists springing up on the net lately listing the best psychedelic albums (or prog or punk or whatever genre you care for). I thought of doing my own because I thought it would be fun but really when its one persons opinion its pretty damn pointless really. I've ran a few small scale reader album polls instead and they are far more informative IMHO. Until now every one I've done has had one clear winner each time. Except the current one which is Psychedelic Beatles albums and they are completely level pegging which is great too. A very good point you bring for debate though Skelter thanks Keep an eye out and I might change the Psych Sounds rating yet
