I won't even bother addressing the 15 year old who cannot hold a mature argument.

Cops have control over the laws that they enforce, and choose to enforce them or bend them or whatever. Very true. Can they change those laws though? Nah.

I agree, cops bust down on the ganja way too much. That's not what I'm arguing about.

I do see what you're saying, and yes I agree that cops tend to abuse their power, and so on. It's kinda hard to compare marijuana busts to Nazi Germany, but yet again, I'm not arguing this. I agree with you.

Yet is harassing a random cop in a supermarket truly the way to inflict this change we want? Do you think that some 15 year old kid spitting facts at a cop will actually change that cop's opinion. It's not like they sat down and had coffee, it wasn't much of a conversation. Plus, the OP could have had some better facts to support his arguments if he was actually going to convince the cop. Saying that he took a law class, and coming back to the cop repeatedly is just being an asshole. As I said, the most the OP achieved was getting some cop pissed off by harassing her, probably leading to that cop busting some kids for pot as a vandeta against anoyying stoners who harass her in supermarkets.

See where I'm going with this?

Agreed. No-one likes a smartarse, you didn't 'professionaly win an argument', you just came across as some know-it-all kid trying to pick a (verbal) fight. You seriously expect an on duty police officer to open up and have a rational debate about the ethics of marijuana legislation in a public place and state anything other than the textbook stuff??

Your personal experience and your view of reality tells you that mj is relatively harmless and causes no real harm to society at large. Her (mis)education and bosses, the media, conditioning and personal experience tell her it's harmful and does society no favours. Frankly, who's she going to believe? Some random stoner following her around a shop haranguing her or those high up the chain in uniform and the organisation she's put 10+ years of her life into?? You didn't 'professionally win' anything. You may be right but some people you'll never get through to, they're taught not to think for themselves and you can bash your head against the wall waving the evidence in their face and they still won't concede you have a point. Ever heard the phrase: "You should never try to teach a pig to sing. It will only waste your time and annoy the pig."? The pig in the phrase wasn't referring to the police but I think you get the point...

Now don't get me wrong, your heart is in the right place but you're going about it the wrong way. You going up and picking an easy target, some dumb grunt, and being all arrogant and know it all does no-one any favours. You need to be informing the public and thus the legislators not the enforcers, they just do what they're told. Cops don't take too kindly to pompous kids telling them they're stupid, even if they comprehend what you're saying. You hassling her is no different to a cop hassling someone because of the way they're dressed or because they don't like the cut of someone's jib, so to speak- preconceptions.

I've suffered violence, harrassment and mistreatment at the hands of the police in several countries for victimless crimes and believe that fundamentally you have to be a **** to join in the first place but I don't go around picking essentially pointless arguments with them to make myself feel bigger. That's their job.

Bits like 'epicly awesome and powerful statement/question' do make you sound awfully arrogant as well...

In conclusion the story did amaze me.... but probably not in the way that you intended.

    TO EVERYONE ELSE EXCEPT "BraveSirRubin"

It's this paragraph which is solid proof that we need to just ignore this ignorant dumb asshole. It would be an insult to people who are truly retarded to call this guy retarded.

    1. You know what, I've never EVER heard of a 15 year old that has already graduated high school, college, and certified in his field of study in college. And to BSR: I'm F***IN 22 moron!

    2. HOW MANY F***ING TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY I'M NOT a law student! i took two, just two, classes in HIGH SCHOOL. My major has to do with a particular science of technology

I'd just be curious to what you think when the next time this PO is the main one involved with arresting some average teenager with a gram of bud on him: Would she think about anything she heard that night at the grocery store? Would anything I have said hit her thought process at that time?

I dont hate them for doing their job...

I hate them because I believe they are responsible for violating my rights as a human being. I have the right to fucking posess nature that grows naturally on this Earth, no government should have control over the nature allowed on our planet, and the right to arrest people for being in posession of it, thats ridiculous.

If that just so happens to be the duties entailed by police officers, then tough shit. You know what happens when peoples rights start getting violated? Yup, you guessed it; people can be assholes about it.

I think you did the right thing. As the test of time has clearly showed us, sitting with your tail between your legs has gotten us nowhere. At least knowing your rights, and showing that you at least know what the fuck you are talking about, and wont stand for injustice shows the officer you do care enough to be outspoken. It shows that people care about this stupid, pointless drug war that has failed miserably and incriminated otherwise good people. It shows that people are getting fed up with this drug war policy and are no longer going to stand for it. While this may be one minor, and seemingly insignificant case, it is a part of the whole, and I believe that does make a difference.

This government keeps us in check with fear. That is why the police are all over this drug war; they want us to get the message "We will get you!" At least this guy stood up and said bring it on, I wont stand for this shit. That buys you my respect, if that means anything man.

These people have taken an oath to uphold the law, regardless if they agree with it or not.

It's like a Nun promising to never have sex, ever again. We may not agree, and may think it is foolish. But to her, it has significant meaning.

You have to understand the importance of oath taking before you can understand why they do what they do.

I understand that some cops are much more harsh than the others, but if you are doing something that you know is illegal, out in the open, then don't hate anyone but yourself.

Again, don't hate the workers, hate the law makers, and those that put the law makers in power - us.

I disagree.. see my previous post. I think there have been countless times in which it has been inappropriate to merely ignore the behavoir of cops for the sheer fact that they are doing something blatantly illegal like abusing their authority, murdering people, sodomizing others and abusing children. In many instances it is not a systematic flaw but the agency of the officers that is responsible for these irreprehensible situations. Hating laws is one thing but hating the abuse of authority by state officials is a completely different thing. They never took an oath to inflict fear in the heart of a community and they never took an oath to brutalize anyone but they consistently do it and have their actions justified by people like you who choose to ignore an individual's conscious choice to harm another by blaming it on the system. I hate the police for the decisions that they make as individuals which is reflected through their organization collectively, very different than my reasons for hating systematic flaws like marijuana prohibition or poverty.

You're talking about the bad cops. I am talking about the good cops.

If one man, within your family, kills someone, does his crime taint your entire family? Are you equally as guilty for his crimes? Are you guilty of his crimes at all?

We aren't talking about the abuse of powers. We are talking about a cop having to arrest someone because that someone was too dumb to realize that smoking a joint outside isn't a good idea.

ssj3gotenks, you mentioned your professionalism throughout this whole thing, yet I want to question that. first off, your original post was hard to read. i have a hard time believing your professionalism if you cant spell the words right and use them in the correct way. especially for being a college student.

then to mention to the cop that you took some civics classes in high school for a couple of semesters, that really doesnt say much. to me, it shows that you´re trying too hard to prove that you know something.

and to bring up weed to the cop outta the blue didnt really make a lot of sense. that´s why she was interested in if you had any on you. doesnt make it right for her to ask, but she could always argue that it gave her a reasonable suspicion.

overall, it´s good to speak up to a cop, but do so when the situation calls for it.

Unfortunately families are tainted by the actions of one person at least in small communities and the organization of police in most counties have been tainted by the actions of one person or a small group of people. There are good cops like the ones I work with who are a part of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition but they are a small minority. There is unfortunately an underlying aspect of racism within the fraternal order of police in most U.S. cities and it manifests itself in the examples I have given previously in this thread. This needs to be combated and cannot be overlooked. I will say this the kid did not approach this situation appropriately but we should not discourage people from approaching the police in particular.. about issues that effect our communities and this includes prohibition, racism, abuse of authority, police brutality, etc. They may not listen but if we do not vocalize these concerns (which is our right after all... there is no reason to plead the 5th when you can plead the first) then we cannot complain about these issues existing within our communities. I encourage everyone to talk to their police about these issues... maybe give it a break if they are not hearing you and approach the issue in another way. But give it a shot. Attempt dialogue and if that doesn't work... guerrila warfare has always been effective historically ;)

Who says smoking a joint outside isnt a good idea?

Sure, thats what we've been told our wholes lives. We've seen people locked up, with the key thrown away, for being involved with that type of shit.

I think we're all controlled by fear. For fucks sake, look at what happened in the 60's, people finally stepped up and said "you know what? Fuck this, I have rights too" And many people actually thought this was the beginning of a revolution in the U.S.

Too many people are kept in check by fear these days; and its a logical fear, as I certainly dont want to spend my life in a jail cell either. But somethings gotta change, or nothing will ever change.

I dont care if the police are fucking peons of something bigger. They enforce something I do not agree with, so will I support them, or at the very least let them go about their ways unchecked? Fuck no.

I cant believe this guy is taking so much shit for this... how daft are you people? You can bitch and moan about wanting change all day- yet you condemn someone when he speaks his mind to a law enforcement official. And how many of you are actually seriously involved in trying to get government reform on marijuana laws? I would bet very few of you.

We have to do what we can, and if that means telling a police officer whats up about something we believe in, then so be it. Go fucking do it. My point is; he took action. Whether you think it will have an impact or not is subjective at best, but at least he fucking stepped up. He did something.

So, no, its not stupid and pointless. And no, its not necessarily courageous either. He simply stood up for what he believes in, in the simplest way available to him. It seems nobody cares to do that these days; I suppose its much easier to complain about how we are powerless and cant change shit.

I'll quote Cat Stevens here: "Dont wear fear, or nobody will know you're there. And you're there. You're there."

Take those words to heart people.

Why do some people always react in a negative, uptight, jackass manner to threads that people took the time to make because they had something to say that people might like to hear?

And you/they always resort to pointing out that the poster must have been young/dumb to put them in their place and make them feel inadequate.

So what if you thought the thread was pointless, why did you read it? Why be a knobhead and post a negative reply?

You just come across as being pissy and insecure as though the post threatened you..

In real life (not the internet) its comments like this which put people down and make them lack in self confidence (as ive learnt from experience). The poster thought he had something people would like to read.. but all of a sudden theres people telling him he must be young and immature, when in fact you come across as being the immature one.

Very well put, and very true man.

I dont know why theres all this tension- as if people have something to prove. For fucks sake, its the internet- you can find out how to build a nuke on this shit. If you dont wanna hear about it, you dont have to click on it, thats the beauty of it all.

And if all you've got is the age card, please, save your two cents for someone that cares.

Also, BraveSirRuben, do you feel proud now that you put him down? Feel better?

See how ironic that post was?

It's not irony if it has to be pointed out...

I doubt it. Like I said in my previous post... Who's she going to listen to- some stoner hassling her round a shop or the people who she aspires to be like? The ones high up the ranks in the organisation she's devoted her life to? It's not as simplistic as you make out, 'I made a good point so therefore she's now going to remember that for the rest of her life'. It doesn't work like that.

The original post comes across as very arrogant and 'look at what I did' when in actual fact you acheived nothing. It's not a very mature way to go about things, going back to the quote in my previous post... you just wasted your time and annoyed the pig ;)

I can't really say much more than I said in my last post, you only pulled me up on one minor point from it so re-read it and criticise me if you feel I'm wrong :)

QUOTE=MelvnDoo]ssj3gotenks, you mentioned your professionalism throughout this whole thing, yet I want to question that. first off, your original post was hard to read. i have a hard time believing your professionalism if you cant spell the words right and use them in the correct way. especially for being a college student.

This is a ridiculous statement bro. heres why:
    1. Sorry, but this isn't a college essagy. I don't remember right now, but did i mention on there that i had a 3.66 gpa when i graduated? and that i was in national tech honors society?

    2. Since this isn't something that I'm going to miss points on, why would I care, especially considering the size of it, if there were two or three errors?

then to mention to the cop that you took some civics classes in high school for a couple of semesters, that really doesnt say much. to me, it shows that you´re trying too hard to prove that you know something.

You must have some sort of (no offense btw) mental handicap that I'm not aware of. What this handicap I believe is would be a distortion in someone else's preception. Just to let you know, there was absolutely no whatsoever amount of L337ness, as i say in UT2004, that i was trying to put onto her about who know more about law enforcement.

Look I could go on with arguing with you but I gotta go buy clothes soon and all I have to say to you is quit comming on here and just blabbering thoughtless bullshit statements (BTBS).

and to bring up weed to the cop outta the blue didnt really make a lot of sense. that´s why she was interested in if you had any on you. doesnt make it right for her to ask, but she could always argue that it gave her a reasonable suspicion.

I agree with this first statement by 50%. This is because rather than that being the first question as you made it look in this above paragraph, it was after a longer series of other questions. And furthermore, it had nothing to do with the other questions asked before it.

As well as for everything said after that, I can say I agree with the rest of this,
however, this is just simple, common sense information and by just saying all that nonsense BTBS and then closing it with nothing more than common sense information doesn't make it any less bothersome.
overall, it´s good to speak up to a cop, but do so when the situation calls for it.

OH WAIT A SEC, I didn't see this part here so everything I've just said applies to everything except this part here.

As far as this goes, I see your point and take it with actual significance (good job bro, lol), but if you would have just read it in it's entirety you would have easily noticed that it escalated right after she unjustly asked me those questions in red after I just asked a simple question that was unrelated to the rest of them.
