I See What You're Getting At, Nesta, (And We Agree For The Most Part) But I Completely Disagree With You On One Point In Particular; Reading IS In Fact A Gauge For Intelligence...And A Very Important One. How Can You Say That It Isn't? You Remarked In Your Post That "Reading Takes Practice, Not Any Significant Amount Of Intelligence" By That Conclusion, You'd Expect Anyone With Minimal English Capabilities To, Let's Say, Read St. Thomas Aquinas Five Proofs And Thoroughly Understand It? As Long As They Practiced? I Doubt It.
I think IQ tests are pretty meaningless. I've scored at about the 1 in 10,000 levels I believe it was, and I'm a really smart guy, but I don't think I'm usually going to be the smartest out of a group of ten thousand people.
It's Only A Bit Off, Actually. This Scale Should Go To 160, And The Numbers Would Be So Low (For 160+) That They Would Barely Be Visible On The Graph. The Other Information Appears To Be Correct. = )
but reading comprehension is different than being literate. a person with low mental abilities, given enough time and dedication, would be capable of reading every word in there, even if they were unable to grasp the big picture. not all such people, mind you. for some particularly unintelligent individuals reading at all, along with reading comprehension, is going to be nearly impossible. a lack of intelligence may be the cause of some cases of illiteracy, but it is not the only one, and that is why i dont believe literacy is a fair gauge of intelligence. intelligence will limit how well you can read to a certain point, but this does not mean somebody who cannot read at all, or who cannot comprehend what they read, or simply reads very slowly is unintelligent. it IS a skill, and it DOES take practice. intelligence does come into it, but its not purely reflective of one's intelligence, thats all i'm getting at. its not that i think intelligence doesnt factor into it at all, its that a reading test is not going to accurately measure one's iq. a genius may potentially never learn to read. this does not mean they aren't brilliant, it just means they are illiterate.
Does it do anything for you? And thanks. Everyone in my familys been complete geniuses. It's mostly luck.
oh...ok. i thought it stopped short. even if it didnt, if its roughly correct then i'm in a pretty small minority of people, assuming this scale is reflective of the tests my siblings and i were given as children. also apparently one's iq is not necessarily static over the course of their lifetime. i may be somewhere now, years after being tested, than i once was. over the past 6 years i have done drugs and have had more than my fair share of beer
if what i've been told about my test results are correct, its just very, very depressing. i mean, my whole life i've felt VERY very alone and unable to relate to others. if this information is accurate i'm more alone than i even realized.... wow...i'm not kidding when i say this is really disheartening and depressing. actually i kind of wish i could call in sick to work and open up my minikeg now
Now We're Just Splitting Hairs We Don't So Much Disagree On This Issue As We Just Have Different Ways Of Expressing Our Opinions On The Matter, It Seems. And I Agree Completely With Posthumous = )
Aw, Come On Now! Can You Imagine Being On The OTHER Side Of That Graph??? I'd Say You Don't Have It All That Bad, Nesta.
i dunno. intelligence has never done anything good for me. i suppose it would do more good to be on the high end of the spectrum than the low end. but its only ever made it hard to relate and understand others. really good friends are unbelievably hard to come by. not so much good friends, but friends who understand me and who i can understand. a relationship is that much harder still. at least if you're on the other side of the hill, i'd suspect you may have less understanding of your differences from others. and there would be others making an effort to try and understand you and love you because they know it would be hard for you to find people to be around on your own.... people with significantly low iqs are catered to....at least they have that.
