I'm usually wary of the person who tells another to stop being different. What would happen if others treated hippies that way?

    *gasp*

Why are you so angry? Do YOU think it's ok to rape a sleeping person if they were to never know or find out about it?

"Is it okay to RAPE someone when they're sleeping?"

    Keyword: RAPE

Rape is always wrong. Just because they don't know it doesn't mean it's any better. It's like raping someone who is drugged or passed out and intoxicated. It's shitty, cowardly and more than wrong. It's atrocious to even think a form of rape could be justified.

I agree with .Hannah. though... it's a philosophical discussion, just because the original poster asked the question doesn't mean he/she is a rapist, and it's a lot more mature to take it as a philosophical question and discuss it as such than jump at the person screaming "You filthy rapist!!!" or something to that effect. Why is everyone so quick to make assumptions? Give a person the benefit of doubt, you're not being very open-minded here. Are people just afraid of philosophical discussions?

Going back to the original question, my feelings are somewhere along these lines:

Yes it does make a sound, yes it is rape, yes rape is wrong. Even in a completely hypothetical situation where the person being raped would not wake up or suffer any physical consequences (such as pregnancy or diseases). "Right" and "wrong" are cultural constructs anyway, for example in the far far past rape was not as big a crime as it is considered today (I'm talking Medieval times and beyond here). But in our culture, rape = wrong. Having sex with a sleeping person is still non-consensual sexual intercourse, so it doesn't matter whether the person being raped never suffers any consequences from it. It's the act itself that is a crime, not the results arising from it.

And in reality, removed from that hypothetical situation, there are a million things that could go wrong of course. The person could wake up, suffer physical harm, be infected with an std, suffer harm on a subconscious level, etc.

Reminds me of an interesting film I watched though (can't remember the name, it was foreign I think) about a man who fell in love with a girl who was in a coma, and looked after her. It was later found out that he had impregnated her. Now it sounds horrible, but the way it was portrayed made it seem a lot more ambiguous as to whether it was such an evil act... Interesting film, wish I could remember the name.

Are you serious? Telling someone that they are 'different' is usually only considered an insult if you're either a high school kid trying to desperately be a clone of all your friends, or if you lived in Germany in the 1940s or some other fascist republic. :(

Hmmm interesting thread, im sorry i've been away from the forums for so long or i would have commented much sooner.
    First off...

Soaring Eagle; you've been banned for personal attacks before, what makes you think your second comment was called for?
That goes for you too Fastswitch, and a number of other people that resorted to personal attacks.
Despite how much a topic enrages you, focus on the topic not the poster, personal attacks will NOT be tolerated.

Second, he did refer to it as rape, but what if he worded it differently? I think the question at hand is: "Is it rape if..." moreso than "Is rape wrong if..."

At anyrate, i would consider that rape and i would consider it wrong. I dont personally keep very good track of how much money i have, i often have lots of various $$ bills laying around my room and dont generally keep track of how much. I know on occasion my brother has stolen money from me, and even some of my 'Friends' but i could very rarely say for sure when these things happen. I would consider it wrong for people to take money from me even if i didnt notice just as I would consider having unconsented sex with someone wrong, if they didnt notice.

Just lock the damn topic, since most people are far too hysterical and reactionary for it.
