You get the impression spock is somehow distant. It's because he doesn't use smileys in his text, except in the form of comprehension. I want people to hear what I say, not play with or try to appease their emotional state.

If people want to talk just to blow off steam, I am not very good company being very objectively oriented, but i'll listen for an opportunity to put all that hot air to good use. Sliding in the one liners really lightens it up unless you are seriously crabby and then you are just kind of chewing on the detritus in your head.
