I'd say you definitely scratched it. I've done that plenty of times. It always feels like there is something in your eye but you can't see it because it already came out. Then you wake up with a crusty eye and it's fine. Rinsing obviously only helps if something is still in there. Just going to a dimly lit room usually helps a lot and then it will heal overnight.

A few times, I scratched my eye pretty bad (got stabbed with a stick once) and had to go to my eye doctor. He puts some kind of numbing fluid in my eye and then puts in a protective contact lens and it feels much better until it heals. Luckily, he's a good friend of mine and will get me in right away which I really appreciate because it's almost unbearable when it's that bad.

Once I was at the ocean with contacts, and lost one of the contacts, and felt something inside of my eye above the pupil....thought is was the contact lense, so here I am digging at about an hour trying to get the contact out of my eye.....as I could feel it....and it was scratching my upper pupil....

finally had to go to the hospital....the lense was not there...it was a scratched cornea and I only made it worse by digging around with sandy fingers.....had to wear an eye patch for ten days, too, after that one.

They just sent you home with an eye patch? I wouldn't have been very happy about that.

eye drops...ointment....medicine for pain....but I remember having to wear the patch for quite a long time.....
I was not anywhere near my home when it happened so I had to walk into some strange near by hospital at the time...
I was more upset about losing my contact at the time...no dailys...just one pair I had at that time....
anyway, I know scratched corneas are no laughing matter......

cornea has no nerves to conduct pain from a scratch....it just feels like there is something in your eye....once it happens to you you can tell the difference but it is deceiving like meanglow says.....it feels like a boulder is in your eye every time you move the eyeball

i'm surprised you finagled pain meds for a cornea scratch......

the dye squirt is cool...all of a sudden one fills up with brilliant blue or red but the other eye is still clear so you get an awesome show for a few seconds until they shine the ultra violet and then your eye fills with tears and the dye runs out

mine hurt, though....I tore up my eye all over from looking for that contact lense....that is all I cared about then..... :D
never mind my eye....where is my contact lens?....was my attitude.....

    I learned, though.

and spaceman...then a dog almost bit that eye out of me later...and i had plastic surgery and that is the eye temple I fell on in 2013...some parts of us seemed to be doomed more than others, it seems, sometimes.

The worst time I messed up one of my eyes was when I got stabbed in the eye with a tree branch at work. I went right to my friends office and he looked at it through the machine (no idea what that thing is called). He was in awe. He kept saying things like "Let me look at that again........damn!! That is sooo bad! I can't believe how fucked up that is!" He looked at it 7 or 8 times and said it looked like someone ran a whisk broom across my eye a few times. Finally I was like "Ok....can we move on to the part where you fix it?"

And really...even being that bad...a few drops of the magical potion and a protective contacts lens and I felt much better. That one didn't heal overnight. It was uncomfortable for a few days but not intolerable.

By accident. I turned around up in the bucket and it slide past my safety glasses and into my eye before I could even react. It was actually pretty scary at first. I knew I got it in the eye but didn't know how bad immediately. I swear, I expected something to be hanging from my eyeball. It was that scary.

Yes...you can flush with water. Of course. But it won't help if there is nothing in your eye to flush out. If it's scratched, it's scratched.
