I ended up taking down another one of those pines today, same area, but this one was still alive. Not as healthy as it should be, but still green. I'm not sure what is killing these trees. No evident borers and the green tree seemed healthy at the base. The dead ones I've been taking down have a lot of surface rot under the bark and the bark, some of the wood has evidence of some kind of borer but that likely happened after they were dead... Just weird, why these trees?

I did collect some cones from the live tree... hope I can get some viable seeds. There are other species of pine here too. Need to collect some cones from them too.

I've got a forest to plant.

they actually grow pine underground here

    4800 feet under

they converted a mine level to underground greenhouse and grow the seedlings for replanting on land reclamation sites

Ty, I've heard of Pine Forests turning over to Hardwood Forests through the years. I think Pine Beetles came through and hit alot of the pines in the woods behind where I live.

That's what I was checking for on this live tree I cut... But there's no evident insect damage.

    the pine look ok here

but when you cut them and stick them in the woodpile after a while you can actually hear the beatle larvae chewing under the bark

there are huge sections of bush near eggsprogs town that are totally dead but it doesnt seem so bad in my area yet

I got two deep cat scratches on my finger.

I was going to scoot the cat out of my chair but he was all squirrely. I stuck my hand down, to go under him and move him, at the same time he decided to jump up and scratch off out of the chair... his back claws gained their traction in the underside of my finger. It really hurt and they bled like crazy.

I called hubby to bring the peroxide to the sink and was doing okay until he said he wanted to follow that with rubbing alcohol.

I said that I would do it if I had to; but that it was going to hurt me really, really bad.

That's when I started crying like a little kid.

    That surprised me, even.

Hubby decided I could go with just band aids for now.

Whatever is taking these pines seems to be species specific, there are other types of pine in this same area that are fine... But there are also some of this same species that are fine. It's a weird situation. I could see one or two, here and there, but this is in a small area. Still dropping them through the same hole in the tree line. They are that close to each other.

Chilly out this morning when I picked up Dad to go out to breakfast. It was in the 40'sF. I actually wore a turtleneck and a lined corduroy jeans jacket. Luckily Dad had on one of his winter jackets. I was prepared for a battle if he was not wearing something warm.

Aeri I hope you are doing better now. There is no way on earth I would pour rubbing alcohol on an open cut. That stings like a bugger.

Specs, it is cold here as well and damp. I am going to cycle the furnace to get rid of that damp feeling here today. Came home last night from being at my moms church fall supper and I was glad that I had taken a jacket as I needed it.

I am not quite the same person now personality wise as I was when I was much younger. My outlook on life now has changed completely, I am a far more progressive thinker now and firmly believe in the freedom to express your thoughts as to how you would see fit to do so. I think society in general still has a little way to go in this respect, before it is free from the shackles that limit our freedom of thought and expression, but we are nearly there.

My poor dog was shivering after a few minutes outside last night. It was 60F and we haven't seen that since April.

The cat scratches are doing okay. The finger is pissed off. I have one just above the crease, on the pad side, of the first two joints of my index finger.

I'm going to soak them in some salt water before I put ointment and band aids on.

I had a cat scratch get infected once. It was just along the side of my fingernail. It's no fun. I had to go to the doctor with that one.

Went camping with friends last night. We had the fire going but a lot of our smaller wood was 8-10 feet long. I busted out a chain saw to cut it up. People were like "You have a fucking chainsaw?!!" I was thinking "Umm...yeah...do you know me? I'm not cutting this shit up with a hand saw!"

Then we started drinking beer again at about 11 this morning. After a few hours, I came home and went to sleep. My wife woke me up later. I got up and asked my daughter where her brother was. She said he wasn't home. I was kind of pissed off by that and went upstairs to take a piss. While pissing, I realized it was still Sunday and not Monday morning. I totally thought it was time to go to work and the kid wasn't here. Bonus round!!
