From what research I did about rooting this bay leaf tree, I was supposed to use a much smaller piece (about twig size) than I initially started out with. I've used rooting hormone on all the cuttings...

It seems like the smallest one is holding up the best.

Like I said, there are still 2 little twig size branches coming up from the bottom/soil line...and I have put some good potting soil and seed starter around the base...trying to give them more time to grow. I didn't think about them actually taking root, but that would be great. I know I'll have to do something with them before it gets cold.

I still can't get over this happening...the tree was so full of leaves, more full than I'd ever seen it in the 15 (or 16) years I've had it...and then for it to go wilted and then brown within 3 days. 3 days at the most. gad

That bolted branch at the bottom grew so fast and tall...when I got that tree years ago, it took about 2 to 3 years for it to grow as much as that branch that bolted up within a few (2 or 3) weeks.

Sometimes after a decline (for various reasons) in the crown, a tree will grow new leaves quickly to support the root system.

    Thanks Wiz for the info

and thanks Ty, because I was really wanting some feedback on that, even if it was that I probably wasn't rooting it the normal way.

But see, I do relatively nothing the normal way. :D

I'm still holding out hope that I WILL have/get a bay tree out of this.

There are a number of reasons I want a Bay Leaf tree...

when i lived in the sierra foothills there were bay leaf trees growing wild. i don't know if they were native, or something the miners had planted a hundred years before. they're indexed in the native species guides so i guess they are. bay leaves are wonderful to put under you pillow, as well as in your stock pot to make soup. they were few and far between among the many varieties of pine and oak, manzanita and prostrate ceder, but common enough to find here and there among them.

They do work, but if following a recipe that calls for "bay leaves" you may need to use almost twice the amount if you are using Bay Laurel.

Laurel does make a great insect repellent though.

i'm confused...the bay leaf you put in the soup pot is a herb that comes back every yer isn't it?.....each year it starts all over again ?

I don't think that is what lynn is growing is it?

comes from a leaf that grows on a tree. most herbs are perenial weeds. bay though, just happens to be a leaf of a tree. usually dried and crushed if you buy it prepared. but packages of the whole leaves aren't that hard to find in a lot of stores if they have a whole unprocessed spices section. sometimes its near or in the mexican foods section. (which sounds and seems odd, but that's where i've usually seen them in stores).
