LOL-Yea-I know what ya mean-As far as my case went ; your right. Social Security makes it very' very difficult to win your case-I had a total left shoulder replacement and a total left knee replacement and 3 bones removed from my left wrist and a stent implant in a main artery near my heart-I was turned down!-I fired my lawyer; got a new law group from California called the Disibility Law Group-very good lawyers-we appealed and I won a big back settlement-It was determined my injury date was 2002 so I was back payed to then-Then lawers get a set amount put down by SS-I believe it's 30%-I also won a small law suit and workers comp was paid back from the settlement-The important thing to note is that every penny I won was mine already-It is Social Security money I put in-Nobody else pays anything-If you get hurt and can't sit in one spot for long or stand or lift any real weight; then you should qualify-Like I said though I miss trucking-I miss the money and the feeling of freedom of the highway-but retirements nice too-POD-see ya at the other place-
When employment guarrantees and security issues such as retirement plans, and medical insurance have been all but eliminated, what else does the lower level employee have to count on. Their employer no longer has to supply anything, but a workplace, and even that doesn't have to be as safe as it once was. And what about the people that had worked and invested in companies like Enron and WorldCom with their life savings. Think they have much to supplement their Social Security today. They probably have trouble paying their utility bills. You young folks want private accounts go for it but when there is another Enron or something similiar and you invested in them, who do you turn to then? You privatizers should go rent the film "Fun with Dick and Jane". It's an eyeopener.
Maybe if we get the fuck out of Iraq and FINALLY mind our own fuckin business we would HAVE money to fund a Universal Health plan. We, supposedly, are one of the richest countries in the world yet we have people that die EVERYDAY or have illnesses that go untreated because the medical BUSINESS is NOT affordable.
That is because medicine/health care is viewed as a business and not a right for every human being in our society. I lived through the push for Managed Care/HPOs they were supposed to solve all the problems and lower costs. They created new sources of wealth for a few and screwed the rest of us. Anyone seen their costs go down or their level of service improved?
Gardner; Sad thing is that I trust Enron and World Com more that the goverment. Our system was able to root out corruption in companies. There is no watchdog with the balls to root out corruption in the goverment. It a giant payola machine that co-opts and bribes its way out of trouble, all the while amassing more obligations, more debt. People aren't even curious about how overextended the goverment is, thats a problem.
They weren't interested until recently. I think this last election showed that they (the people of America)are. It was the republican administration that allowed Enron to play it's games with energy in California. Bush told California to deal with it. And old folks died because they couldn't afford to turn their heat on. As far as our government being overextended the Republicans also oversaw that outcome. And there has been little or no oversight on companies like Haliburton and their ilk, that overcharge for providing for the GIs that are dying in order for their companies to prosper from war mongering. It is the corrupt companies that lead our government into corruption. You can't separate the two. They feed on each other. It is the corporations that are lobbying for privatization of SS, because they will benefit and they will not be held accountable, anymore than Enron or WorldCom were.
True but will the interest persist beyond the election or is the general assumption that now Democrats have taken over both houses our government is now rendered magically trustworthy? I think our representatives and senators need to be periodically reminded of why the balance of power has shifted lest they forget that failure will have dire implications on their careers. It may be big business that helps fund campaigns but it's regular folks who vote. Regardless of what party is in charge, no one is going to give a flying fuck about wages and standard of living unless they are kept keenly aware that it's their ass on the line should the ball get dropped.
The Market sets a value for everything in America, wages, prices. It is both a liberator and a tyrany at the same time.. It is always honest. Individuals are best served by understanding the market and working within it. If you are on the sidelines.... :banghead:
I agree with what you have to say and the quote you have in your signature. Eternal vigilance is the key. I don't think either party has clean hands or got a clear mandate. It was a wake up call for all in both parties, to clean up their act. The little man has had their ass on the line for at least ten years now since NAFTA was passed, it's now time to tell these fat cats "to show us the money." They promised us benefits...where the hell are they?
.................................................................................................. Seems that a concern for a few shopping cart boys and burger flippers is taking all of the oxygen out of a discussion for income over a broader sector of the population. In N. Jersey pay rates for non-skilled part time work are at about $8. Nobody earns $5.15 because of the market. If Time-and-a-half was mandatory for Saturday work as is is for Sunday it would benefit a broader sector of workers. Paramus, New Jersey has more shopping malls per person than anywhere on planet Earth. They also have very strict blue laws that prohibit those Malls from opening on Sunday. Well Sunday pays time-and-a -half for workers salaries. If you could see all of the lobbying and manuvering that they go through to open for Sunday shoppers; then it becomes understandable that paying time-and-a-half wont kill them. So why not time-and-a-half for Saturday too ? :beatdeadh
In boosting the compensation of each employee by that $2.00 The Employer also has to boost the vig paid to Uncle Sam by that same percentage. For every dime paid in taxes by The Employee, the Employer has to match it. If our spendthrift goverment could lay off The Employers they would have more to give to the workers. Citizens who vote should pay income taxes, companies are not citizens.
:agree: I see that various states have minimum wage laws and even cities are establishing living wage thresholds. In New York City, a corporation can re-locate from Manhattan to Jersey or Connecticut in just 10 miles distance. Keeping its workers and clients. Competition between those states helps to keep the politicians honest or jobs will just leave.
yeah, but what your suggestion would do is drain off every competent reporter to all work for what is basically a monolith between the Post and Rocky. I did the big city daily bit, and while it was a great experience, I LIKE what I do and where I do it. Sure, I deal with yuppie chowderheads, but I get so much more leeway with the day to day aspects of my reporting. What I write will matter: it will get kids involved in a cause, raise awareness or cash for another cause, explain the workings of local government(and keep a bit of a check on that- fourth estate and all), get people doing quirky stuff recognized and I get to dabble in entertainment reporting, which for me is a promote my buddies fest, on a variety of venue levels. But should these intangible benefits be COUNTED upon? Which begs this question: Should someone have to leave a job that is basically good, except economically? some say yes, some say that the skill needs to be valued across the board. I don't expect the same pay rate as a daily (and I haven't really worked that out, I beleive I work harder now than at the daily, but I do have less demand on an hour-by-hour basis) but a similar override that says the company respects the fact that the nature of our jobs disrupts our lives outside of the office, and we should get compensation (since, again, the gov't is NOT looking out for the reporters/ photogs ---the print plant workers get the full overtime range) would be a grand gesture. Keeping one insurance company would have been nice. I qualified for Company A, but not Company B. Not that I could afford my part of the insurance once my rent/ power/ food was paid. Thank goodness I have little consumer debt and a paid-off car.
Piney, NJ has a minimum wage higher than the fed rate. Maybe localized wages could be addressed by state legislatures (would provinces have that ability, too? Not sure on the power division in Canada)? But that leads to lots of interstate competition, leading to the sort of job drain the US sees to Mexico/ Saipan. (whole other topic there) maybe regional agreements, but the edge states will always have the worry that the new business will go in over the state lne to a cheaper neighbor, with a population center (and services provided to them) in the edge state.
And what about those jet packs we were promised so many years ago-?The Republicans lied about those too!-We should all be flying around with our own jet packs by now!Damn it!
What kind of health plan do you provide your workers and how much of it do you cover? and do you have a 401 K that you match dollar for dollar with the employees?-How is the retirement plan or profit sharing plan doing?-If you get by not contributing to these; then you should consider yourself very lucky to only pay them a meesly 8 bucks an hour-
Here are the numbers he's talking about plus all the 2005 & 2004 numbers. http://www.bls.gov/cps/minwage2005tbls.htm#1 http://www.bls.gov/cps/minwage2004tbls.htm#1 Study the differences carefully... it shows the percent recieving MW and overall number on MW went down. Peace, poor_old_dad
I did read it very carefully and nowhere did I state whether it was starting or finishing wage-I have a little problem with your whole story-It sounds a little too well written or contribed-I really don't think your a business owner at all-If you were you wouldn't have the time to be messin with these forums; as most small business people put in 15 hr. days-As a trucker I would never find the amount of time that you do; to argue the MW with people-But hey-nice try-and 8 bucks gets ya sqwat-a beater and a burger-BFD--
