I agree with weallhumalong. Find some NA meetings in your area. Get a sponsor and work the steps. Do some service work. Work the program. I was in the same situation as you. Addicted to anything I could get my hands on. My life was unmanageable, I fucked up college, lost family and friends. I'm 8 months clean and my life has never been this good. At least give yourself a break and check it out. Our message is that an addict, any addict can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use, and find a new way to live.
NA isn't always the answer. For us ATHEISTS out there, NA is a slap in the face. I suggest SMART Recovery if such measures are taken.
I don't understand how NA is a slap in the face to you. It doesn't require that you belive in god. Only a higher power. That higher power can be anything ranging from a tree to how our universe so smoothly operates. You can choose to use God but don't have to. Its a higher power of your understanding. And trust me there's a lot out there more powerful than you. If you are truly an addict self will just isn't going to be enough. Its been proven to me time and time again.
That's nice. I politely disagree, however. Although we may naively claim that the Higher Power could be any metaphorical manifestation, the reality is that the real people you meet in NA tend to believe in God, and Jesus Christ in particular. And, as an atheist, who still maintains humility, but also reserves the right to not be infringed on, I do not want to be in NA for my treatment nor do I think others should have NA as their only option.
I never said it was his only option. I know most people believe in God that are in the rooms but a lot choose other things. I myself don't pick the God route. I work my own spiritual based program with my sponsor. Nobody tries pushing their beliefs on me. I was just making a suggestion for the Guy because I've been exactly where he is at. I was telling him what worked for me.
