Ahoy … I’ve been reading this thread, but gave up after about page 28 … phew … so I’m not sure if my two cents has already been said, but if it’s cool I’m going to blab … a lot, so that I can respond to different issues in one shot

    1. Rasta was not ‘exported’ by Marley, it was ‘exported’ by H.I.M. Taking Rasta to the people of the world is part of the ‘work/s’ of being Rasta … it’s part of continuing what H.I.M. started

    2. Being Rasta starts with the Nazarite / Nazarene Vow … which is not a religion but a commitment to a lifestyle. A person is only an ‘un-authentic Rasta’ if that person is not committed to the vow. The vow is connected to being Israel … one that abides to no mortal made laws, is rejected by all mortal made cultures and has no place to call home.

    3. Many Jamaican Rasta see fish as being ital if it is eaten in an unprocessed form. This is not the Nazarite / Nazarene way; same as many Jamaican Rasta attend funerals … this is also not the Nazarite / Nazarene way. Another complication is that many Jamaican Twelve Tribe Rasta view the tribes in context to the months of the Roman calendar instead of the moon phases of Creation.

    4. Rasta became ‘diluted’ the day that H.I.M ‘took’ it to Jamaica. Entrusting the Jamaican people with Rasta was not completely supported by the Coptic Church. But H.I.M. had His reasoning and through His decision, Rasta has spread on a global level.

    5. Marley was not innocent of playing the capitalist game. But Marley used what he earned to build a studio in Jamaica and take control of his music … and then started making even more money. That money Marley then put back into the community … e.g. feeding people. So it’s not about capitalism, it’s about intentions and being conscious.

    6. Marley was not a 100% authentic Nazarite / Nazarene to start with … e.g. he ate meat i.e. fish. But insulting Marley for his ‘not so perfect’ commitment to the vow is something that is only tolerated by Rasta if it is done within Rasta. Marley was 100% committed to the ‘work/s’ of being Rasta, the Brother was strict and serious … and through his contribution and international industry is now in place for every Rasta to generate a living through.

    7. Apart from sweat shops manufacturing t-shirts that Marley-related designs are printed on … although I’m not actually sure what the evidence for this is, it was something that was mentioned in the beginning of this thread … Rita Marley has not actually ‘sold out’. Rita, or Nana Rita as she is known in Gahanna, is very actively involved in African development issues, particularly food. If achieving this means selling Marley merchandise to suburban youths or ‘un-authentic’ Rasta of any race, well then that is what has to be done … it’s still part of doing the ‘works’ of being Rasta.

    8. Rasta is not about race, it is about the one culture that unties all people across the world and that one culture is the ancient culture that started in ‘Africa’ … where all people come from. To be Rasta is to be human … all people are therefore Rasta; the majority are just not very good at it. Nyabinghi chanted ‘death to black and white downpressors’ long before H.I.M. travelled to Jamaica …

…Matt.24, [31] And he shall send his angels with a great SOUND OF A TRUMPET (1Thes.4:16, 1Cor.15:52), and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

I really don’t think the Rasta in ‘Africa’ would be very pleased if someone had to accuse Rasta of being race-specific. I really don’t’ think the ‘white’ Rasta in Southern Africa, like Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, etc. … and I don’t mean in the ‘suburbs’, I mean in Rasta settlements and in rural areas … would be pleased at all. Actually, no, I don’t think any Rasta in Africa would appreciate race being brought into Rasta.

Remember what H.I.M. said, “… that until the colour of a man's skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes …”

    9. Race was brought into the Rasta ‘way’ due to it being incorporated into the black consciousness movement, particularly through Marcus Garvey. When this happened, Rasta was infected with ‘hatred’ and that is when the real confusion kicked in. But H.I.M. had His reasoning, which was to inject Rasta into black consciousness. it is only through the ancient culture or what is now known as Rasta that all black people can emancipate themselves … not through race hatred and religion.

    10. ‘Rasta’ is a modern term and approach to an ancient culture and the word is directly related to Ras (Prince / Duke in Ethiopian) Tafari Makonnen, as He was known before being crowned ‘His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I (Power of the Trinity), King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, and Elect of God’. Everything about H.I.M. was to modernise the ancient culture and Ethiopia … H.I.M. had no intention of destroying technology, He wanted to modernise Africa

    11. The long title related to H.I.M. is specifically due to Him being a direct descendent of King David, the first coming of the King of Kings and initiator of the building of the Temple in Jahrusalem. The connection that H.I.M has with Jesus / Yehoshu`a is that They have the common ancestor … King David … but not every Rasta agrees that H.I.M. is the rebirth of Jesus / Yehoshu`a.

    12. Some biblical scholars identify Jesus / Yehoshu`a as also being the King of Kings, but this is not the case in all biblical texts. The reoccurring reference to King of Kings is David. Some Rasta, particularly within the ‘Sack Cloth’ Rasta in Africa, view the reference to Jesus / Yehoshu`as being a ‘Christianised’ approach. H.I.M. is the second coming of the King of Kings … H.I.M. is Elect of God, not Elect of the Son of God.

Never the less, Rasta is not about religion or ‘isms’, Rasta is about a ‘bloodline’

So the real question is not whether some Rasta are authentic to Rasta, or whether accepting non-black people as Rasta dilutes it … the question should actually be whether Rasta itself, as interpreted in Jamaica, has been 100% authentic to H.I.M. … to the Coptic Church … and to the ancient culture of One Love that we all descend from. H.I.M.’s instructions are primarily to spread Rasta to all people of the world … what is Rasta should therefore not be determined specifically by the interpretations of the people of Jamaica … the connection to Rasta is H.I.M.

At the same time Being Rasta means not questioning the reasoning of H.I.M. … being Rasta is to ‘understand’ H.I.M. and not to try to ‘overstand’ H.I.M. It was H.I.M.'s decision to place great responsibility on the people of Jamaica … but one cannot help but wonder if the entire approach that H.I.M. took by going to Jamaica was specifically related to one person, Robert Nesta Marley

Ahoy … Sorry ... didn’t mean for the post to come across as longwinded. There were so many aspects discussed over numerous posts that I tried to approach a number of them in a single post.

Ahoy ... Bro, I've been a passionate scholar of H.I.M for over a decade … but I still don't know if I'm ‘Rasta’ as such. On a technical level, well I've not been authentically committed to the Nazarite / Nazarene Vow, i.e. I haven't consumed flesh since ‘95, but I do eat / drink dairy: I have cut my locks before: I don’t shave, but I do trim my facial hair …

(LOL, I also have tats on my upper left arm and I’m way too much into Punk Rock, Hip Hop and Ska, so I have some real ‘Babylonian’ interests)

I’ve moved with some amazing Rasta in South Africa though, Sisters and Brothers that don’t judge a person on the basis of their physical appearance and along the way I’ve learnt that being Rasta has nothing to do with being labelled ‘Rasta’ … so the label is not something I’m interested in, because the focus really shouldn’t be on mortal made cultures. The focus is always on H.I.M. and the work ahead.

… Marley reasoned: Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.

Insecurity is a bad thing, the sooner you learn that no1 on this earth is special or better than the next the sooner you will see that dreads are nothing but tangled hair.
