How can you say the German public were manipulated with the Nazi's, yet blame the current public of Britain for all the shit going on in the country? Surely, if you were to blame us, you have to blame the German public for electing the Nazi's, and that includes the Jewish public.

 

blame isn't the issue but taking responsibility is... responsibility to wake up and see what's going on and move on..., if one doesn't see how they are responsible in the entire mess, then one won't see how they can be a part of the solution

I should just note that whilst healthy debate should be encouraged, please, there's no need to resort to personal attacks.

In the German case, the bureacratic structure and division of labour meant that very few people at the time, even if they were directly participating in the process, knew the full extent of the Holocaust. It was no random act of violence, but rather the full workings of the state system turned against a minority group, where most of the participants in the means were seperated from the ends and from the moral reprecussions. Zygmunt Bauman's 'Modernity and the Holocaust' is a great text to read on that.

As for the British question, we did protest, very actively. The largest demonstration in the history of Britain was mobilised around the war. But it was quite clear that the government was not going to listen to the anti-war case, and had already well spun its 'evidence' for the need for war. What is happening now is a process by which Blair is being held to account for his actions. Had the population not been so strongly against the war, I don't think the pressure on Blair now everything is going wrong, would be nearly so intense.

I think this honeyfugle MUST be about 15. Either that, or they are seriously misinformed. I don't understand how anyone can lash out at anyone British for fighting the war, considering that the people that started the war, and the majority fighting it are American! And, I haven't heard any reports of tons of people defecting or going AWOL in order to not fight.

when i first read this i almost thought it was directed at me... then i remembered that this is the first contact i've had with this thread and that i'm a little bit stupid at times. :stunned:

I'd agree that the Brits have the best humor ... oh sorry i meant, humour. ;-) It is more refined and subtle at times though; so can definitely get lost on some people. For instance, when I was a bit younger (late teens) I never quite got Monty Python, but now I think they're hilarious. However, back then, I loved Ab Fab ... but that's another topic.
Don't get me wrong, I still love A LOT of American comics and comedy programs; but I do think, overall the British flair for comedy is best. There are even American comedians who say they love coming over to England because they don't have to dumb down their jokes as much.

Oh, and I don't know the etomology of "faggot" but I do know that it was used to describe a bundle of sticks which were used to light fires. This would be why a lot of gay people are severally offended at the use of the word or the word "fag" as pertaining to a gay person, as it denotes that you should in essence light them on fire. (Though honestly most people that use that term aren't smart enough to know all that). I also have assumed that somewhere along the lines the British used "faggot" and "fag" to talk about ciggies because of what a "faggot" was ... a bundle of sticks that were on fire ... it might be a bit of a stretch, but I've always assumed maybe that's where the Brits got it from.
