I am pretty open minded, especially about music, but punk music is so offensive to my ears. One of my friends listens to this crap. He made me listen to a song called 'Jesus was a terrorist" by anti-flag or black-flag.. something-flag. Instantly I was reduced to laughter, then took off the headphones. I told my friend I remembered a joke, to cover for the laughing. The joke my friends... punk music.
I refer you to earlier in the thread when we were discussing the variation within the punk genre....I would never say I like ALL punk..or all of any genre.
What do you think of metal drummers? Check out any of the works of Richard Christy, be it in Death or Control Denied, he is without a doubt, one of the best, coming from a drummer (myself).
I didn't even say that. Richard Christy, not a handful of random metal drummers. And by metal, I mean I don't recognize korn, slipknot, godsmack, or any of the sort as metal. I'm so sick of saying 'nu-metal' when they don't even deserve the title of 'metal' in they're genre name. The same applies for punk. I know what real punk is. How would I be able to make a judgement on punk without knowing what it really is?
sorry, its sort of hard to tell over some internet forum. I wish I could say the same for punk drummers, but from what I've heard, I have yet to find one complex punk drum tab.
hahaha what a crazy thread!!! heres my two cents(its all i can afford). sure a lot of it is crap(ie. Blink 182/Sum 41) and a lot of people are sellouts but you get that in every genre of music. its all a matter of taste. i grew up listening to punk and playing in punk bands and no matter how simple or complicated the music is(there are some very skilled and technical punk bands out there) it has this uplifting energy and feeling that you cant get with other types of music(i do like and play many other types of music by the way). as for the message, some bands are trying to make it big, some want to educate and get a message across, some want to have fun, it all depends on the band. personally i feel even if a band has a message they care about but is singed to a major label, getting loads of money, and considered sellouts, then they're still succeding in spreading the message to people. you cant do that in the garage. a lot of bands make it to the top without major labels and have created theyre own which also help other bands out(ie. NOFX with Fat Wreck Chords and Propagandhi with G7). theres just so much diversity in punk just like in every other style of music. i heard "emo" a few times and this is something that is now associated with punk, but can be used with anything "emo" means "emotional" thats why you hear a lot of emo punk bands singing about relationships etc. but then again you could consider pretty much anything that uses emotion to be "emo" even a lot of the Beatles songs. as for selling T-shirts and other stuff it doesnt matter if your a punk band or a electronic band a blues band or whatever sometimes its nessecary to provide income(especially if you are on your own) if your making a living on your music. just like people who hate there job but need to work to survive in todays crazy world. anyways back to my main point. i love punk, many people love punk, even more people hate punk. thats just the way it is. but there are lots of bands out there that are trying to make a difference. take me for example, the band Propagandhi helped me become more aware of issues like animal rights and i wouldnt have a clue what the Cointelpro projects of the 60's were if it wasnt for them
NOFX - The Decline you've got to admit, kurt can play his shit. that long at that speed, it's not too easy.
what i would like to see is a metal wanker guitarist in a dual with a flamenco guitarist...the "tough" metal guy would go down! I like Black Sabbath and some other metal bands...mostly from the classic era....but you've gotta admit, most metal lyrics are horrible...
Thats all relative to how speedy his work sounds to you. If its all a matter of endurance, I suggest you buy or download some Marduk songs. Seriously. I'll listen to that no fx song a little later. I've already got a headache.
There's dueling guitars... Steve Vai and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Close enough, heh. You read the lyrics for 'Sweet Leaf' and tell me that most metal lyrics are horrible again Also, read any of the lyrics of Death. Pure genious!!!
i second that crapping on....hahahhaha play it with your elbows, i would buy that CD....and sell it at the warped tour
fuse has never ever played any punk oi! or punk rock of any form. so you obviously dont know what REAL punk is.
ok, I may be coming in a little bit late into this conversation, but I cant just sit back and listen to someone claim that the talking heads and sonic youth are punk bands. These bands you mentioned (including television) were given the label as punk, when in all actuality they never were close to being actual punk music. The reason why you think they transcended the genre is because they actually werent even part of the genre to begin with. The only reason the talking heads are actually thrown into that group is because they were playing the CBGB around the time punk bands were playing that same venue. Sonic Youth is not even remotely close to punk in any way, shape or form. They are an experimental group. Its like saying Pink Floyd is a country band, it just doesnt work. all Im saying is, you really cant consider those bands the best of the genre, when they arent even actually part of that genre, dig?
Sonic youth is definitely punk based, well their older stuff anyway...listenb to Sister...songs like "Catholic Block" definitely have punk elements...."I've got a catholic block, do you like to fuck, I've got a catholic block, I guess i'm out of luck" First time i saw them it was pretty intense....slam dancing etc....of course that was a long time ago
