from msnbc news: Isn’t the Electoral College system undemocratic, since it does not permit the American people to directly choose their president? Yes, it is undemocratic. But the Framers of the Constitution did not want a system in which the president was chosen directly by the voters. “The people are uninformed and would be misled by a few designing men,” said Massachusetts delegate Elbridge Gerry during the debate at the constitutional convention. (Gerry ended up not signing the Constitution.) Since 1789, no majority in Congress and in the state legislatures has been able to muster enough support to change the system. -------- i dont like this electoral system at all i think its BS myself but we use it anyways,, sigh* -------------------- Has Congress ever considered scrapping the Electoral College system? Yes, in 1969 the House approved a proposed constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College and to provide for direct popular election of the president, with a minimum of 40 percent of the popular vote required and a runoff election between the top two finishers, if no one got 40 percent. The proposed amendment was killed in the Senate by senators from small states and Southern states.
i think the electoral college is good for a country the size of the united states. It forces the presidential candidates to go all over the country campaigning instead ofjust sticking to major cities. It was set to protect the minority from the majority. I see no reason to do away with it. It has worked so well for the past 200+ years.
I sure hope that there is a clean election tomorrow, no lawyers. I think we'll be setting a dangerous precedent if this stuff happens 2 years in a row. The optimism around here is incredible though.
And those thinking Kerry will take Ohio, Florida, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, (you know all those states up in the air).......wishfull thinking folks.
I still think Bush will have trouble in the Midwest (Ohio, MI, PA). OH and MI have been been hard hit economically during Bush. FL has been very close since early summer. I'll guess that Kerry wins by about ten electoral votes or less.
Protect the minority from the majority?? wtf?? Isn't the idea that the MAJORITY is who decides things?
Madison and others talk about the worst kind of tyranny being an overbearing majority. The electoral college forces them to get atleast part of the minority on their side...
But think about it per person, if they keep the majority from having the power, then people in the minority have an unfairly large amount of power over those in the majority... It supports inequality...
it is not about stopping the majority from having power. It is about the rights of the minority being taken into consideration.
Naturaly they are, but being the minority, obviously should have less power than the majority.... Like I said, all people having equal power, the majority will be more powerful, giving the minority extra power creates an imbalance...
They do. Count how many states gore got in 2000 and bush..bush won far more states, but barely won. Also, the electoral college is to stop faction...urban/rural..etc
Whatever, I'm not sure how to explain it any more clearly... Besides there are other reasons to get rid of the electoral college.... A direct popular vote would be the best solution... Or would this somehow not be fair?
there is no reason why it should not be a straight popular vote, or none that we3 would like to hear anyway.
For the most part, I agree with Kandahar's map. New Mexico is a swing state that could go to Kerry. There may be another state or two that will be different. It's going to be a close election, but not nearly as close as 2000. I went to vote this morning and saw more young people than ever. I'm now hopeful that Kerry will win. If the election is close, we'll see more calls to finally dump the electoral college.
with a direct popular vote it pretty much destroys the importance of smaller states. My home state, vermont, would be MEANINGLESS. There are countless other states. Not only that..why go out and stump in the rural areas of states? Just go to the cities...
Well if your state has that small of a population as to be meaningless, well rightfully so, as it has that small of a population! The whole thing about states came about, when they were semi independent.... Now giving smaller states an unequal share of power serves no purpose... Why should a small portion of the people have more power than the rest??
they dont have an unequal share of power in the electoral college..thats why we have weighted electoral votes. Our whole system is based on state system. Should we do away from the Senate since it gives 'unfair' sway to smaller states? Why give states any rights? Lets do away with the whole idea of states and have federal elections for everything. Lets really fuck vermont and wyoming over.
