i didnt know you had locks, freeinalaska they look amazing, especially for only four months. you must have perfect hair for locking.
Thanks wanaderin_blues. Yeah my hair curls into locks and pretty much just wants to dread. It's way too much work to keep it brushed. I had locks when I was in my twenties so I am glad I am able to let them go again.
Right on, freeinalaska! Those are looking good for 4 months, I had know idea you were letting your hair lock up. Mine was the same way - if I let my hair go even a couple days, it would ringlet and start to form locks right away.
I've been lurking for a while learned lots from you all Who knows what I was looking at I guess you can't really see much but I'm not even sure I'd call these dreads yet! Some parts I backcombed, some parts I just left alone, and the front part I've left normal for now. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out a year from now
Hey guys, thanks for all the advice on the Newbies FAQ/Maintenance stuff. I started my dreads 12 days ago now using (unfortunately) a DreadHeadHQ kit--yes, I'm an idiot and never even saw this forum until after DreadHeadHQ had my $80. what's worse, I've been a HipForums member for awhile now, and never even thought to check the forums for dreadlock info, and I gave myself a full year to think about it before I decided that I definitely wanted to have 'locks. Lol, I know, I'm a space-case. Anyways, I'm posting a few pics of my dreads so ya'll can let me know if you think they look like they're on the right road. I did use the locking accelerator and lock peppa from the HQ kit, and discontinued my wax use after only 2 applications. Once I read everything here, I stopped using all DreadHead HQ products. About the only question I have that I didn't see answered in the FAQ section (and it is possible I missed it--after reading for 3 hours straight, my eyes were going a little buggy) was what to do if my hair has a 'crispy' feel to it, like it's brittle. Based on the posts in the other thread I would guess aloe would help, but if anyone has other suggestions, they'd be welcomed. Also, my hair is really thick, and was about 6 inches long when my mom and sister each took turns over the course of a week and backcombed it all--it took 34 hours of actual backcombing. Does it normally take that long? I'm taking out the rubber bands from the roots tonight--is this a good idea? And is a little halo of fuzz close to my scalp normal until the dreads start to tighten and lock together? Alright, enough of my jabbering--on to the pics! RIGHT AFTER THEY WERE ALL BACKCOMBED ABOUT 9 DAYS OLD AND CALMED DOWN A BIT: TODAY, DREADS NOW 12 DAYS OLD: Comments welcome!
ms. punkie you are incredibly beautiful and your dreadies look like they are coming along wonderfully, how old are they?! also, everyone else who has posted, your dreadies are all amazing, i love to see other peoples creations , so thankyou all.

hey people, this is me just laying round home, going on nearly a month with the dreads. (I look as if I'm about to fall asleep or I'm well stoned.. real truth is I hate flashes) So, while I'm here I'll give you the story... I've been wanting dreads for years, but never actually thought of it being possible (work, school, friends and family etc) but as I got more confident with myself I decided this was for me and that I shouldn't care about what others think but how I feel about myself. I did a whole bunch of thorough research on them, for example, what makes up a dreadhead (environmentalist, spiritual, vegetarian, hippy, rastafari etc stereotypes) and I thought that I fitted somewhere between hippy and spiritual. Then I researched on how to take care of them, found this site plus many others, and by asking people with dreads. So, the process took about 10hrs, to compliment the time I watched several movies and a season of Viva La Bam. The first day they are like all neat looking and great, but sticking up everywhere. I'll post pics later of my first day, but this is me currently. This is the back of my head. Hope you like em WiLLz.
I just wanted to send a thank-you to everyone who has contributed to the Knotty Know-How forum (especially soaringeagle)--you guys have been a huge help in pointing me in the right direction regarding the care of my dreads. I don't even want to think about what my dreads would have become of I followed the 'correct way' (according to DreadheadHQ) using wax in my locks. I will post more pics as my locks get older--they're still babies at 18 days!
