youve just hit the nail on the head here.... the stereotypical pitt bull owner... its these people that cause the problem....not only keeping them but then letting their dogs have pups and so the agressiveness is inbred and the cycle continues.... poor dogs....

a well bred pitt bull is as loving as any other breed....with proper handling...

ive never liked the little yappy dogs coz they always seem to bite a lot. we've always had cockers and they've had great temperments. although my current puppy can be a handful at times.

i think cocker spaniels have AWFUL temperments. my neighbors used to have them and when they were in the yard they would bark and growl at anyone except for their owners.

actually pitbulls aren't a breed by definition, they're a type of dog, but arent techinically a breed. boxers for instance could be listed under the pitbull heading.
i don't believe in outright bans like the one just implemented in toronto. i think that casts a negative light on an animal that just has a tendency to have bad apples..im more of the persuasion that there are bad owners not bad animals, but some animals are beyond the ability to retrain.
mutts are by far a better type of dog to own than anysort of 'purebreed'

    LMAO... mental picture. :D

and i LOOOVE boxers. boxers are soooo cute.

i went to the humane league once to look at dogs... why? i have no idea, since i knew i wasnt "allowed!!" to get one... but this boxer came in... like a year or two old boxer, that was abused and neglected by previous owner and in the cage... the dog was sitting there in a fetal like ball whimpering and crying and looking at me with these big sad eyes. omg, i sat on the ground and told mister doggie it would be okay for like an hour and i was crying. i think i had pms that day. i was very emotional. i WANTED him!!!!

Mutts can be great dogs to own, but tons of purebreed dogs have consistent good characteristics.

i agree. it totally depends on the type of breed.... you can pick a certain breed of dog, that if it's pure and you want certain characteristics... tada! mutts are rad though too.

prolly if i was gonna get a dog, id get a nice ol mutt.

i have to disagree with a couple statements in that film, which is heartbreaking to be sure. pit bulls ARE aggressive animals. to deny it is to live in ignorance. some people get lucky, some get unlucky with overbred pits who are unstable. our trusty was a beloved member of our family, brought home by my father who can't live without dogs and is a sucker for an animal in need of love. she was sweet, loving, playful, and then she just lost it at about 4 or 5 years old. and the sheer physical power of her breeding made her a true danger. to ignore that fact is plain old denial. and yes, i think that many of the people drawn to the breed are drawn to them for their physical poiwer and aggressiveness. they consider it an extension of their dubious masculinity. they deliberately train them to evilness. then leave them insufficiently caged or seperated from the people walking around, usually children who don't know any better. i'm glad that there are now cases where the owners are taking major hits when their dogs maul someone, because this shit is just unacceptable.

WOW...got tears coming out of my eyes watching that one...I know so little about pit bulls, actually, I'd like to say it is all a matter of breeding as to whether they are aggressive or not, (as well as the training they receive from the people who own them), but, I just don't know. I've never really interacted with one, and given that I've heard they need a human with a dominant personality to train them (which I don't have...I'm more of the "Can't we just all be nice and get along" type of personality :p ), I doubt that I would ever have them. I guess, for me, the jury is still out. I do have to say though that I am against pit bull bans in neighborhoods and counties (they have been trying to do that where I live), but I agree with whoever said that pit bull owners should have licenses, and be required to do some kind of formal training with their dogs to hopefully prevent aggression...some of those well-loved pits in that movie sure looked like sweeties...

wow...i had to cover my eyes so i couldnt see the injured dogs.... that was one hell of a film...and apart from Happyhippyflower i think we are basicly in agreement here and only differ on minor points....

what i didnt realise was that pit bulls are resposible for so small a percentage of dog bites....unfortunately though when a pit attacks the outcome isnt just one bite...theres a bit of a difference being attacked by a pit bull as opposed to a small breed...

i did discover one thing though.... some people think that my Great Dane looks like shes crossed with a pit bull....she looks nothing like any of those...i think the vet is right and shes crossed with a Doberman...

Labs and Cocker Spaniels are more likely to bite, the only difference is these dogs will usually bite once and thats it. The way pit bulls attack is completely different. They have super powerful jaws, bite, and dont let go. Which they were bred to do... Any breed can be aggressive, pit bulls just stand out more because of the damage they do to people when they attack.

Pitbull are bred for fighting and its cool to have a dog that is slighty agressive - like when you give it a stick and it runs and chew's it up and then wont give it back and shows you their teeth. People do play fight with them as well like slapping them round the face and seeing how long it takes for them to turn and bite them.

I dont like the fact of putting a animal to sleep because it has bitten someone when they have hit it or something but these dogs escaped and then bit so it wasnt like the kid was in their home or anything.

It is sad - most of the time it isnt the dogs fault its the owners, any dog can be aggressive not just pitballs, my friend has one and she is so sweet - sure when shes pissed of she bites but when we are pissed of we hit/slap/punch.

Here's where I get a bit lost. So if a dog kills a kid right, the owner should be put on trial for murder? Let's keep it real, the owner wasn't the one that bit someone to death. And like I said before, to the people getting stitches from bites it doesn't matter what the owner did. The fact remains that an innocent got bit and there are and will be consequences.

Another question. How many here have gotten mauled and said, "well it's okay, it's the owners fault?"
