just 1's and zeros, and they work like 'on' and 'off', which is why digital is much cleaner, as its far more difficult to get 'on' and 'off' wrong than it is to fuck up wave forms

 

Retardation is a medical term, but in the past few years, it's taken on a pejorative conentation, so the word retardation is only used in medical context much in the mainstream, otherwise it's considered un-PC.
