not true. i get through easy, being a white mom with a blonde haired blue eyed baby. dave shouldn't have to shave his beard. he shouldn't have to change his appearance. if he doesn't have his beard, people assume he's a nazi, too. he can't win. dark skin does not make you a muslim terrorist, and no one should have to be treated that way.
It's not an "unpopular" stereotype, it's a profile which over 90% (probably 95%) of plane hijackers fit. When you get a number that high, then I believe it becomes necessary.
Oh sorry Max, I was addressing RealAmerican's statement, though I disagree with you as well. We shouldn't resort to ethnic stereotyping.
Please. I don't need some kid who can't even spell the name of his own country, much less know anything about fascism telling me I'm sticking up for it. Almost every airplane hijacker to date (who intended to tartget America at least) has been a young Arab male. Isn't that reason enough to be extra cautious when there are 14 suspicious Arab males getting on a flight?
I think it resembles an aspect of fascism, namely singling out a particular ethnic/political group, generally an unpopular minority, for harassment, and in this case it's Near Eastern males. I don't believe it is justified without any other pretense to arrest them. Do you think the Japanese-American internment camps in WWII were justified?
One cannot deny that the members of fundamentalist islamic terror groups are primarily young arab men, correct?? Then why would it be wrong to profile young arab men?? Police profile killers right? What is the difference? I believe that profiling is absolutely necessary and whether you agree with it or not it will continue to happen because it is the only way you are going to stop them. Would it make sense to look at old white women if you are trying to find an Al Qaeda operative?? ***Please, somebody bring up John Walker Linde. The one instance of a white male muslim freedom fighter.***
I suppose if you had credible information on their involvement in some al-Qaeda coordinated granny-terrorism ring... Basically I believe you should have a reasonable pretense to investigate a suspect, and I don't include ethnic stereotyping. Information that they're involved with militant terrorists or whatever, are handling dangerous materials for suspicious reasons, whatever, sure. Not simple ethnic profiling.
i can't be okay with one type of profiling and not okay with another. i'm not going to compromise my principles of fair treatment out of fear. basically our government is now being allowed to terrorise innocent arabs because people are scared and okay with them being overly scrutinized. i'm sure some of the black driver profiling started up because the majority of troublemakers in one particular area were black, due to them being the majority of the population thereabouts. don't let people get started or it'll never stop.
I would hardly call pulling aside a suspicious looking arab and checking to see if he has any dangerous objects on him terrorizing. Flying is a privilege, not a right. I'm waiting for fast food restaurants to start profiling fat people. Maybe then we can change our status as the most obese country in the world. You want a super-size double quarter pounder with cheese value meal? Sorry, you're too fat. If you want to eat here the only thing we will give you is a salad with italian dressing and a water.
Hehe well keep waiting, they'd never do that, their profits would plummet. What sort of business refuses to serve its most frequent customers?
Hate to side with you because it looks bad on you. But I believe this is what you are saying: "He who would give up essential liberty in order to have a little security deserves neither liberty, nor security." -- Benjamin Franklin It strikes me as common for the common person to be against profiling of blacks and others who they do not live near or have association with to freak out when they become the potential victims. Cowards. You would willingly give up all of your freedoms for a night of safe sleep. I do not oppose profiling. I never have. But you that I call cowards have always been against it, till now, till your saftey comes into question. Now you know the fear that old lady who lives alone in a minority neighborhood feels every time a car load of minorities pass her house and eyeball her. I am glad that hag on the plane got to experiece what she did. Hope more of you do.
I'll fess up. I fell for it. Hook, line, sinker. It's good to see the Internet work well as a lie-detector! In case there's still a believer somewhere, the world's most trusted authority on what's true and what isn't has info at http://www.snopes.com/politics/crime/skyterror.asp
Update. Air Marshals now admit there was in fact a reason for a slight bit of concern on that flight, and they did suspect that possibly a terrorist was onboard the plane. The funny thing is that the suspect was... ...the reporter who wrote that story! More info, quotes, sources, and links are here: http://www.donaldsensing.com/2004/07/air-marshals-not-worried-aboard-flight.html The only indication I saw that the author might REALLY be a terrorist is that she quoted Ann Coulter.
I assume that I fall into this category of "cowards" since I do oppose profiling of black (and believe me, living where I do it's hard not to associate with or live near blacks and Arabs) but not of Arabs, and the reason is that the statistic is just so much higher. When 99 out of 100 plane hijackers are young Arab males, then it becomes common sense to start being extra cautious of them in airports. You're glad "that hag" on the plane got to exprerience what she did? Really? And if she and every other person on the plane died as well as a thousand others, would you be glad for that as well?
Yeah, If i see a bunch of white guys acting suspicious on a plane, i would hope airline security wouldn't just let them go about their buisness. I say we look and profile in terms of suspicious activity though, not skin color. If someone does racially profile, and they see a bunch of arabs, they can look out for them more then some other groups of people, but they shouldn't act on anything until they ACTUALLY see something suspicious. It is unfair for people of color if they are just trying to go about what they need to do and because of their color they are pulled aside. Peace and Love, Dan
I did not say that I wished she had died. I said I was glad the "hag" had the terror experience. She and those like her deserve to have thier little worlds shook up every now and then. I ride a motorcycle and fly a patch for a known club. I am not small by any means and people tell me often that my eyes are "spooky", so I wear shades alot. But when I see some skank soccer mom and her panty waist hubby in thier SUV cut some old lady off at a stop light or do some other stupid shit, I remove my shades, pull aside of them, rap my pipes to get thier attention, and when they look, give them the meanest look they ever got. Hubby usually scrunches down in the seat and soccer mommy turns red and shits herself. I usually follow them for a few blocks just to keep thier adrenilin flowing. All yuppies need a reality check every now and then. I am not going to hurt them, but I make them aware that thier are people who can. As far as profiling goes, I get it all the time. I don't sweat it. If I were a cop, I'd stop me too. I am by no means a liberal, but I liberally agree in profiling, racial or otherwise. When people return to being human beings, and not animals, then let them live free of profiling.
I agree with you're intimidating of soccermoms and their pussy husbands (which, on a completely different note, is a necessary service to the communtiy and proof of undeniable manliness), but this "hag" wasn't doing anything wrong except fly on a plane. Then we agree (at least to an extent).
