Thanks very much for the excellent post. What would be an example of a synthetic detergent that wouldn't leave any residue behind when washing with hard water? What brand could I look for?
You might want to try maybe a "clarifying" shampoo? I wish I could help you but the reason why I know so much about Bronner's and hard water is because I'm allergic to a common ingredient in most shampoos and so can't use them.
yeah i just used to rub the dr. b bars in my dreadies and i believe it works better than the liquid but what do i know
oh, i didn't throw mine out. i use it as body soap. works great for my body, just not for my hair. and for those wanting brands/types of shampoos that work well with hard water, or on hair that seems not to like dr. b... avalon organics peppermint is what i use (i've heard their lemon is really conditioning, so maybe stay away from that one, but they have lotsa scents) it's a lil' more expensive (i pay 6 bucks for a bottle... can't say how long it lasts, cause both me and loverman use it) i've also used suave daily clarifying... worked great, 2 bucks at wally world. lasted me over 6 months
I enjoy avalon organics... which I dilute to the consistency of apple juice. A bottle costs about $7 and lasts me about a month maybe? I'm not married to that shampoo brand or anything... but I do love how it smells and what it does for my hair (except the lemon variety - don't like that one). I've also tried j.a.s.o.n., nature's gate organic, and some others that were pretty good. I also clarify with a baking soda concoction about once a month. I do keep a bottle of Dr. B's around. Even though I hate it for my hair it's great as an overall castile soap. Also, I'll use it now and then if say, I'm camping or something and don't feel like packing more than one kind of soap.
