why don't they don't poll americans to find out if they're unhappier these days? we're living longer, right? on the other hand, i'm glad i'm in the not overweight 50%

people haven't questioned if we're "just evolving larger" because evolution is a process that takes a hell of a lot longer than 60 years. or 60,000 years, for that matter.

can you please site the studies showing overweight americans are healthier, or are you referring to nameless "studies" mentioned in magazine articles? because everything i've seen indicates the exact opposite. i'd be very interested in seeing your sources.

brad of central pa, there have been numerous studies and polls showing and increase in depression and anxiety in americans, and numerous hypothesis put foreward as to why, mostly pointing to unnatural, sedintary lifestyle patterns and cultural influences.

Fat people are jolly. Therefore, Americans are the happiest people in the world.

Exactly. A big factor in why Americans are so overweight is that we eat too damn much! Portions are huge, dishes (plates, bowls, cups, utensils, etc) are big, and we are practically rewarded for eating more than we should ("Supersize for only $0.20 more!"). Now, of course we have the ability to refuse the supersize and not fill that big ass plate up with food, but just the fact that these things exist and are ever-present in our daily lives has an affect on our eating habits.

I wouldn't exactly say that it's the portion size, but more or less what we eat. Our grocery store shelves are lined with anything bagged or boxed. Granted, now cookies, cakes, and other foods come in fat free versions, they are just loaded with more sugar and nasty trans fats like hydronated oils.

I think the main point behind these studies (and sorry, I have no citations) is that a healthy body comes in many shapes and sizes, and that it's possible for a person that weighs 190 to be healthier than a person that weighs 130, based on their lifestyles. The problem with the way the articles stated this is that they made it seem as if it's healthier to be larger, instead of clarifying that size isn't the biggest factor in determining health.
