I think that cheese is quite cut-and-dry as a non-vegan item, and vegans do not eat animal products. However, it is addictive and what is done is done. Veganism is not a quest for holier-than-though behaviour or "cleanliness", but you should, as one poster said, "walk the walk".
Also, did you know that a lot of cheese has animal rennet in it? That is certainly not vegan, as animal rennet comes from the stomach of suckling (baby!) animals (calves of lambs, etc). There are great cheese altrnatives out there, including my favourite, 'Follow Your Heart Vegan Gourmet" cheese. There is also the Uncheese Cookbook and here is a link for it (highly suggest getting it!)

    Ask yourself some questions:
What is it in the cheese that I want that I cannot get from any vegan product or combination of vegan products?
Am I vegan to reduce animal suffering?
Do I support animal exploitation? (if not, then cheese is not a suitable product)
Am I vegan because I want to tell people I am vegan and think it's cool?

This post is not to criticize you or make you feel bad. I have been vegan 3 years and know what it is like to want cheese sometimes. However, if you use it as something to look forward to, as your post suggested, you view it as a reward and will think of it as something near and dear to your heart, and possibly never really go vegan. Do not think that we don't care about your efforts. Every meatless meal counts. Just consider why you find this one thing too hard to let go. There is plenty of vegan info out there. I am sure you can go vegan. Just remember what you are doing for yourself, the planet, and the animals.
I think this is common. But find an alternative, a real vegan alternative.
