i like sublime ... cant say the same about offspring though... buy my favorite punk band's gotta be social distortion ... love them
Well its funny because today I am off to Huntington beach 9the birthplace of offspring) and i will drive through long beach (birthplace of sumblime)
i'm a big offspring fan, haven't really liked an album since americana though. conspiracy of one had some good tracks, but overall it was pretty weak. the ones since then are pretty awful.
:2thumbsup: When i was in like elementary/middle school I was obsessed with the chick in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g19fCJotPc"]The Offspring - Want You Bad - YouTube
i listen to sublime all the time, even been trying to learn some of there songs on the bass...offspring i only listen too when my roommate puts it on.
I think it's pretty obvious that I'm a pretty big Sublime fan. "LetLovinTakeHold" comes from their song 'Boss DJ'. I used to be into the Offspring but I can't really ge into them anymore, but many of their songs hold a high nostalgic value to me. I'd like to encourage any Sublime fan to check out Slightly Stoopid, if you haven't already. Bradley found the 2 creators while they were still in high school, and signed them to Skunk Records. After Bradley died, they started Stoopid Records and have been jammin ever since. Their style is close to Sublimes, but they are much more diverse. Here is a little dose of Stoopid..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFGmnJQ_BF0"]Slightly Stoopid-Closer to the Sun (Official Music Video) - YouTube
I absolutely despise both of those bands, though I did like Offspring for a brief while when I was in the 8th grade. Thankfully, I outgrew that phase quickly. I even had one of their shirts, with the cover of 'Smash' on it. But it's weird you should mention Offspring, because for some reason just a few days ago I had 'Self Esteem' stuck in my head. I haven't even heard the song in 18 years.
Everybody raved about the offspring back in school. They released "pretty fly for a white guy" back then and yeah I've never listened to them since. Everyone tells me though that their old stuff is good. I think I've heard a couple of their older songs but couldn't remember the titles. Sail away or something? And the one that starts off nah nah nahnah nah.
americana was the first album i really got into, it came out while i was in grade 5 or 6 i think. i didn't really like anything they released after that. conspiracy of one had a couple of catchy tunes, but splinter and the new one (maybe more new ones, i have no idea) were shitty. ixnay and smash are my favourites.
Honestly, I don't see where all the hype comes from, but it seems to be limited to certain groups; one being skater tweens who just stumbled upon their dad's stash a week ago, the other being a strange hybrid of Juggalo and wigger. (EDIT: Yes, and I almost forgot you hippie stoners.) I don't know, I am a pretty big fan of reggae and reggae-rock. I love groups like Black Uhuru and Steel Pulse, but Sublime's blend of reggae and pop-rock just does not sit right with me, and I wonder if they would be as popular as they are were it not for Brad Nowell's untimely death. Heck, even UB40 were more convincing than these guys. To each their own, but I just cannot get into a group like Sublime. Even if I enjoyed their music, the retarded cliches and people associated with their music would ruin it for me. To me, it's music for 15 year olds.
Sublime used to be my favorite band. They're actually still up there, I thought I had grown out of them for a while but then I made friends with a girl that loved sublime a few years ago and rediscovered them all over again. They're pretty fucking awesome. The Offspring, on the other hand, is part of the 90s pop-punk scene that I did indeed grow out of. I know! I've been saying since I was 15 or so (I hope that doesn't prove PR's point haha) that Sublime is the universal band...most people seem to like them. How could you not?! pressed rat, have you heard a lot of Sublime beyond their self titled cd? My favorite cd is probably Robbin' the Hood, minus all the weird dub tracks. I just realized youtube has the whole album uploaded, awesome. Its going to be a good morning. edit: I think I even like the weird dub shit, actually.
I like roots reggae and dub a lot as well. And just as Rat I dislike almost all of todays boring and generic pop/rock. So for me there is no need to listen to a band like Sublime when their pop/rock influences ruin the good parts for me most of the time. I can enjoy a catchy mainstream song but it still has to be good. If I can listen to all the great reggae rhytms and weird dub shit (which let be honest is also pretty generic but I just happen to dig it ) without lame pop influences mixed in the choice is easy. This makes almost all tunes of Sublime obsolete for me (in the sense that loads of other artists do what I like in them but better).
I had a teacher in college that considered Sublime the most important band since The Sex Pistols, Lol it's funny that rant has stuck with me. Sublime had some pop sensibilities but lyrically they didn't cater to formulaic pop themes , they also had punk, hip hop, and ska influences and blended the whole thing together pretty seamlessly. I can see some of their songs having mass appeal but I can't imagine a song like 'Poolshark' being relatable to 15 year olds.
Most important for what? Music industry? Music history? Punk scene? I'm afraid that sounds just funny to me. Sometimes the clashing of certain genres does have an extreme impact on a music scene but I do not see that impact coming in this case. Even a band like Rage against the machine seems more important in that regard.
Sublime was really the first band, or if not the first then the most significant, to combine reggae, ska, and punk with a more relatable pop sound. Add a certain drug-fueled grit and depth to that and you have a band that completely transcends all the different genres they represented. They have influenced so many bands that came after them. Even now in 2013 I can name off the top of my head 3 local bands that are obviously influenced by Sublime. No band since has been able to do it as well as them.
