Theres over 50 different groups that now make up the 'Rebels' roamy assuming they win this war, then whatever quarrels they have between themselves (as thats been reported as likely), how can you be so certain that the victors will be commited to freedom?

Its as likely as not that Al Qaeda may have a say in the outcome-not freedom fighters but terrorists . The West arming anyone in this chaotic situation is simply irresponsible.

I don't think this is correct. Rather, the US strongly supported the Shah

    (from wikipedia)

The Shah was a strong secularist. It was this, among other things, that lead to the Iranian Revolution.

You're right, it's been a while since I've studied this - the united states backed the coup that installed the Shah. Thanks for the correction.

you're welcome. According to the article, there was a us backed coup that removed the democratically elected prime minister, after he nationalized iranian oil fields.

I never heard of that until I read the wikipedia article.

I seem to recall that China (which has its policy of not approving of nations involving themselves in other nations internal issues) banded with Russia on the UN Security Council in vetoing UN involvement at the outbreak of hostilities in Syria .

Let's not forget that the U.S. has made it possible for Iran to ship weapons to Syria and Hezbollah through Iraq, by overthrowing the Sunnis and installing the Shiite government after the Iraq war, which is what Syria and Iran's governments are.

President Putin & Prime minister Cameron have had a brief meeting at Downing Street before going on to the G8 Summit at Loch Earn in Northern Ireland. At their Very brief few minutes post meeting press conference they said that Syria is high on their agenda. There was a frank exchange in with Cameron refered to the Syrian Government as a 'murderous' regime and Putin alluded to the U Tube video of a Rebel eating the heart of a Soldier!

Its to be hoped that talk of Syrian 'no fly zones' and arming of the Rebels by the West are no more than opening gambits for the purpose of the G8 negotiations.
