the problem facing sustainable energy production is not money, its will power. even if america spent a trillion dollars on solar panels to provide electricity it would be a drop in the ocean in the scheme of things, that money would not be missed. how much do you think the moon missions cost? does anyone miss that money? does anyone wake up in the morning agonising over the the wasted trillions of taxpayers money? no. even iraq - does anyone really agonise over the money being wasted over there? no. why? because for the average american this money is not missed because there is so much of it. if the average american did feel the pinch the present government would be voted out. the bonus side of things is that should any one governnet bankrupt america over wars or any other stupid venture, with billions of solar cells in existence, there will still be cheap electricity available, that is reliable and will continue for a couple of decades. ok what about this for a scenario to appeal to the warmongers. terrorists could strike against powerplants etc etc. because solar cells would be so widely spread and ubiquitous trying to take down the electricity system would not be feasible. why? because it would require almost every power cable in america to be cut. solar energy is feasible, affordable and available there is no reason not to use it. i myself have come to this conclusion and have changed my opinions somwhat towards this whole issue. once you get over the psychological hurdle of expense you realise the world could change today!
