Last week I had a popup that would not go away-I ran scan after scan to get rid of it-I have Spyware Detector and Norton-I also tried Adaware and Spybot S+D and still it was there when I booted up-I then tried Kaspersky and did a scan-I had to shut down Norton to install Kaspersky-It found it and removed it-problem solved' but when I removed Kaspersky to put Norton back on' it (Norton) would not load the new updated definitions-It said I had to re-install- I did 3 times-it still would not load the updates' which makes it useless-Now-I got to say that this Norton version is on loan from a friend-we share the same codes-In the past this has not been a problem-Does Norton now know when one of it's programs is being shared -using the same code to install it?-I gave my friend a copy of my Convert X and it would not work for her-no sharing on it either-Norton must have started putting in more security to stop the file sharing-any idea on that?-So-I put in Avast free home edition to try out -how good is this program-Is it beter than Mc Affee?-I have Mc Affee but too much got by so I stopped using it-Anybody using or have used Avast?
While I have nothing but the highest respect for you I'm afraid I'm going to have to differ with you here. I had Norton AntiVirus on my old computer and it was an incredible resource hog. I had virus issues, spyware issues... had to have my H/D reformatted and everything loaded anew- along with Norton. Even with the machine cleaned of viruses, booting up with NAV left me with 52% of my resources.
Hey, you might want to check out Avast or Anti-vir if your looking for something free. They work reasonably well given the price (nil)
Anti-Vir is working okay for me, but keeps reporting a Keygen I have as Spyware. (False positive) I had the same problems when running Norton. Finally it stopped allowing this Golf game I use for online play.
I put Avast on and the only difference I can see so far between it and Norton is the amount of spam I get now-much more-but maybe in time that will slow up-also I noticed Avast blocks out some p2p sites unless changed to not filter those-Other than that it seems fine-I like the innerface-looks like my car stereo-it found a bug the other night and an alarm went off and I nearly rolled out of bed thinkin there was a fire in the house-nice touch!
Norton is an absolute joke. Anyone here who knows me can testify to the fact that I've probably tried out damn near every antivirus program you can think of. NOD32 beats them all hands down. btw it's good to see some of you all again. I've been away for some time now.
Hi there Zero-Excuse my lack of know how but what is NOD32?-Is it AV only?-I am in the market for a new one and I have Avast running now-Is that one any better at detection and does it catch spyware as well?
hi Zer0_II.... how have you been? nod32 is very light on the resources and effective it also has a good detection rate....
Thanks Old Tiger-I'll check it out-Thats one thing Norton had was it covered alot of things-Virus-spyware as well as spam and any adware-it is big though and sucks up the ram-
Rob.. It's O.K..but it's not a free one.. I bought it in a supermarket.. I think I payed 35 euro's.. 2 years updates..which go hourly..yes.. very easy installation..registry key needed.. it was worth every penny I spent on it.. http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-2145-en--BitDefender-Antivirus-v10.html Tiger
OK-Thanks-I looked at it and if this Avast I have now lets through too much I will try that one-This one is free so it's pretty hard to beat at that price-but we shall see-
There are only a few free virus scannners.. Avast..AVG...and Antivir..are the ones.. I used AVG and Antivir.. Avast...as well..found it bit complicated.. it's free..but free..is not always good.. better to pay a bit...and be sure.. of a good scanner.. any comments?? P.C.Cillin is worthwhile.. Mc.Affee as well..and Kaspersky.. there are so many nowadays available..:H pick the right one..O.K? Tiger
I would say so to.... when I used windows I tried to keep the pc clean as much as possible I never got critical security errors on windows 2000pro even if you use Linux you can run into problems if you don't have a sensible safety plan (dont install packages from a shady source, keep your system up to date, use a firewall, do scans for rootkits ....) there is more to it of course but in my opinion overal I would say that a nix based system is more secure....
I have MSN and McAfee comes free but it let too much get by-So 2 years ago I put Norton on -it gave me know problem at all-it filtered everything. It is a big program though-Now I am trying out Avast freebie-see how it does-I also have the pro version of Spyware Detector as well as Spybot S+D and Adaware-I lost my spam blocker when I uninstalled Norton and now need a new one that handels MSN-any ideas?
the wierd thing about Windows and Firewalls: if the firewall isnt very good, you will NOT notice. if the firewall cannot detect the malicious intent, it cannot block it. therefore your firewall will not alert you if something got through because it cannot detect it in the first place. if the firewall alerts you of every new malicious attack, it is good. it could mean bad things about your computer or use, but it shows that the firewall is doing its job. unfortunately, if we could say that the firewall (brand X) was the best, how can we know if it protects us? we cant. if firewall X cant detect the malicious intent, there is no way of knowing how good it really is. all in all, good security comes in layers.
I have Norton System Works which includes AntiVirus and I'm quite pleased with it. I like the one button checkup and Norton GoBack looks like a nice feature to have in case shit happens on my computer.
I've been trying out Avast for a couple weeks I have Norton 2005' but I wanted to check out other AVs-Well' I have Norton back because of the same thing you said-It is very quiet-no popups and it cleans alot of junk-With Avast I started to have lots of spam coming in- Norton used to be a major hastle to run but anymore it's painless-It runs in the background and ya barely know its there-Avast may be ok for virus protection but thats it-Norton has spam gard' adware protection' firewall and AV all working great-I did have alot of trouble uninstalling it-It is impossible to uninstall without first installing their install/uninstall tool-it's free and small-worked good-It removed all traces of Symantec in about 30 seconds.
Hmm... I'm gonna say this even though it may piss someone off. You (collective > society) need to learn how to surf safely. I've never once got a virus. I don't run anti-virus software in the background because I know what not to download. If something looks suspicious I will scan the file with bitdefender free. Use a firewall, don't download suspect stuff. You'll be fine.
