we don't have midterms by the way - each paper is only one semester long, the full year ones only have an exam at the end of the year, in november.

internal is like the essays, presentations and whatnot that counts towards your final mark. For instance, one of the papers i'm doing has a 75% internal assement, then the exam is worth 25%.
